The Federal Government through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Housing Authority raised the national housing stock by 43,125 units from July 2010 to date, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, has said.

The minister disclosed this in an address presented at the inauguration of the Federal Government’s nationwide mass housing programme for Nigerian workers in Abuja, and made available to our correspondent.

“A significant number of the beneficiaries of these new housing units are workers across the country, given the focus of the housing scheme of the ministry on affordability and quality delivery, with particular attention to low-income and middle income earners in both the formal and informal sectors of the national economy,” she said.

Describing the workers as the backbone and the intellectual capital of the nation’s economy, the minister said their welfare and well-being should not be neglected.

She stated that stakeholders in the housing sector were working on several initiatives, including Public-Private Partnerships, to significantly reduce the housing deficit in the country and ensure that all Nigerians were properly housed in functioning communities with access to essential infrastructure and services.

Eyakenyi said, “It is in this regard that in early January 2015, Mr. President will be performing another official ground-breaking of the first batch of 10,000 affordable homes to be provided under a Public-Private Partnership housing delivery scheme of the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Finance and other key stakeholders.

“The establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company in January 2014 is also set to bridge the funding gap of residential mortgages by providing mortgage lending banks with increased access to liquidity and longer terms funds in the mortgage market.”

She noted that the support of the private sector was essential to increase the level of investment required to meet the enormous demand for housing and provision of infrastructure, which was beyond the scope of governments alone.

The minister also urged state governors to make suitable land available for the expansion of the housing scheme for the benefit of workers nationwide, adding that the ministry was ready to offer its professional advice as well as services.
