There will be a tribute to the Nigerian funk Legend William Onyeabor who gave up music in 1985, saying he needed to focus on God. Musicians from Australia, New York and Africa will come together at this year’s Sydney Festival to celebrate the Legend.

Between 1977 and 1985 Onyeabor self-released eight albums recorded in an incredibly elaborate home studio, far more advanced than those used by any of the major labels in Africa, and comparable to technology available in New York and London.

Onyeabor refused to talk about his old days and rather chose to talk Jesus instead until he was forced to sign a contract that will turn the sands of time back to his old days.

Guess what, last month, Onyeabor granted his first ever radio interview to the BBC, revealing he was breaking his self-imposed musical ban and working on new material.
