Who makes more profit. Those that farm and sell the products or those that use the farm produce as raw material to produce theirs. Like buying maize from farmers to produce corn flakes. |

When we talk about profit making in the Agricultural chain, then talk about processors. Broiler farmers- Chicken processors Rice farmers- Rice mills (Rice, rice bran etc) Tomatoes/pepper- Tomato paste/Sachet pepper. Cocoa- Chocolate, cocoa powder, cocopeat, cocoa butter Cassava- Garri, Ethanol, Starch etc Cashew- Roasted cashew nut Groundnut- Groundnut oil, Groundnut cake Sheanut- Shea butter Oil palm- Palmoil, shell, nut etc Beans- Beans powder Fruits- Juice. Yam- Yam powder/flour Potato- Potato chips/poundo potato Wheat- Wheat bread, wheat flour, bread flour Etc the list is endless. I once wrote an article on Agriculture and my unrepentant final submission is that, Agriculture does not lift a nation- Agribusiness/Agroprocessing is the solution to our problems. We farm a lot with little to no processing. They come to our dear country to buy our products, process and package it, export it back to us at a premium price and the unsuspecting foreign-centric end users love it. Processing sometimes, may be costlier than farming but far more profitable if gotten right. Processing helps alleviate the sufferings of some farmers as processors offtake from them. However as a processor, the burden of not getting production right is off your neck- that’s the farmers’ bottleneck especially perishable produce. Agroprocessing is the way. I am starting an Agroprocessing forum very soon and hopefully, get like minds to start meaningful discussions. Check the prices of the aforementioned commodities up there and compare it to when it’s processed. It’s sometimes, x2 in profit. Albeit, light is a huge challenge. My little cent, Michael. 1 Like |
