This Anglican church was once the site of arguably the largest slave market in the world at the time. As a matter of fact the altar stone was once the block upon which captured africans were paraded like livestock. The British put an end to this evil trade and symbolically & poignantly built a church upon the site of the slave auction. Many nostalgic of the old order in majority muslim Zanzibar see this as an act of imperialism-cultural and religious- ; others see it as a powerful and emphatic symbol of the defeat of evil by the forces of good. Whichever way,the end of the slave trade led to the end of the Omani sultanate pre eminence in the e african coast, nearly bankrupting it ,as the slave trade was a pillar of the Omani economy.
