JOHESU Members Attack Doctors On Duty In Abuja by heykims(m): 6:02am On Jan 27, 2015
In a bizarre act of aggression, members of the Joint Health Staff Union
(JOHESU) were at the weekend alleged to have stormed the premises of
Gwarinpa General Hospital, Abuja, to unleash terror on any visible personnel,
especially doctors on duty. They were also said to have vandalised property.
The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory
(FCT) chapter, Dr. Isaac Akerele, who narrated the incident, said it was an act
of “sheer luck for many doctors who were on duty to have escaped the
onslaught”.
Members of the JOHESU comprising nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists,
physiotherapists and non-health workers had since November, 2014, been on
strike in protest against government refusal to meet their demands.
Akerele, however, expressed sadness that a very senior doctor was unlucky and
she was terribly manhandled.
He said the attackers broke down all the entrance to the main block including
the laboratory and later shot canister of tear gas that triggered severe
respiratory distress that necessitated intensive care resuscitation.
Although the reason for JOHESU action was not stated, he noted, it was
apparent that they were angered by the fact that Doctors had been successfully
attending to patients even with JOHESU on strike.
Akerele described the action of the health workers as a barbaric, totally
condemnable, unacceptable and a fatal error.
He said his association was reliably informed that the group was led by one
Shuaib Onucheyo, a Laboratory Technician with Nyanya General Hospital, who
was believed to belong to the militant wing of JOHESU, carrying out this attack
on hospitals and doctors.
He said: “This group came to the Gwarimpa General Hospital with all manners
of weapons, including firearms that was used to shoot tear gas canisters into
the hospital.
“This attack left many, including patients injured, with some in critical conditions
at the intensive care unit especially a very senior colleague who was attending
to preterm babies at the time of this attack.
“We are calling on all authorities especially the Inspector General of Police (IG)
to urgently investigate the sources of the weapons used. We equally call on the
FCT Administration (FCTA) to investigate and apply public service rules to
protect our members on call.”
“To this effect, a letter has been sent to the FCT authorities. In this regard, I
have directed our lawyers to institute a legal action against these persons and
the body they represent for damages.
“ As law abiding professionals, we do not want to take laws into or hands but
we are sending strong warnings to any groups or persons or associations to
stop harassing our members. To be forewarned is to be forearmed,” he
cautioned.
In a related development, Akerele expressed the association’s appeal to
politicians to invest in the health sector, as they campaign for next month’s
general election.
He said the provision of excellent health infrastructure and better investment
should be a priority to the politicians.
Meanwhile, the leadership of JOHESU in the country has been urged to end the
nation-wide strike entering three months now for the sake of the suffering
masses.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH),
Prof. Etete Peters, at a chat with journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, weekend
said it was unprofessional for the health workers to be on such a prolong strike.
The federal government, he said, was not adamant over the position of the
health workers as government had engaged the labour leaders in series of
constructive negotiations towards resolving the lingering contentious issues.
Prof. Peters noted that the federal government has agreed to address the grey
and contentious grievances of the workers, especially those bordering on
payment of arrears of allowances, clinical governance and professionalism.
“We strongly feel that it is quite important to take another look at the scenario
in view of the suffering and hardship the strike is causing the masses,” he
stressed.
According to him, government has agreed to settle the main outstanding issues
bordering on the payment of arrears of their allowances following Court
judgment obtained about two years ago.
The money for the payment of that allowance, he said, had been captured in the
2015 appropriation now pending before the National Assembly for passage into
law.
Equally, he said a high-powered committee set up by President Goodluck
Jonathan on inter-professional relationship in the public health sector has
submitted its report.
“The report of the committee has been submitted to Mr. President and the
white-paper committee set up, we expect that the white paper should come up
in the next few days.
“The report of that committee has summarily dealt with all the issues of various
conflicts in term of professional practice within the health sector.
“It is expected that when the white paper is issued, each professional will know
their role or level of work within the system,” he said

Cheap propaganda! The originator of this news sure has a sinister purpose for this nonsense! Tear gas in a hospital, when someone is alleged to be attending to a baby? And the baby survived it?
Re: JOHESU Members Attack Doctors On Duty In Abuja by nas00(m): 6:09pm On Jan 27, 2015
Not surprised, but it's a huge shame.

Such is the inordinate degree of 'beef' these JOHESU folks harbor against unsuspecting doctors. However, the moment they have a sick relative needing medical care, you see them acting like 'we are one team' to the doctor, so they can jump the queue of waiting patients and get preferential treatment.

Yet, because of gains not worth their integrity and honour, they are destroying a supposed brotherhood.

How could any normal person attack these gallant doctors who have been running clinics and attending to emergencies in spite of JOHESU's strike, which is now about 3 months long? For what reason? When did doctors become FG or Ministry of Health?

Mr ignoramus, that's why doctors are there, to ensure the babies are safe and take necessary measures and interventions to effect that aim.
Besides, preterms are nursed inside incubators which have very little link with the external environment.
BTW
..the part that says a particular man belongs to the militant wing got me cracking.. grin

I dnt want to be tempted to say na ur papa be mr ignoramus. May Godd bless u n ur family for portraying to the cyber world that ur trainings from childhood smacks of civility and tantamount to infantile bunkum. Since u r feigning ignorance to the word ''attending''. Y didn't u elaborate d ambiguity 'attending' if u never had any ulterior motive for this poo?! Docs r nw omniscient to revive babies even if I believe the premature babies were already laid in the 'air-tight' biological machine (incubator) b4 d said invasion?

Moreso, let me presume the hospital was working in its full capacity as the message portrays, what then were the fate of other babies in the adjoining wards and the elderly on admission whom I know might not have much vigor to run for dear lives?! Is tear gas now selective in its action? I dnt wanna be provoked to call u n ur entire house hold a generational fool! Dnt push me to the wall. ok!

Nigerians r engulfed in electioneering processes and r far from the gullibility of the imbroglio in d health sector! GEJ n GMB aren't even considering health sector crisis as one of the headaches of Nigeria. I pity the poor who resort to subsidized health care in tertiary health facilities which has been hitherto grounded by the incessant strikes by those in the health sector coz the rich go abroad even for common delivery of their babies.

I so weep for this country!

Lemme just help u with d summary.
Because of the singular reason that no infant death was said to have occurred in the report as a result of the alleged teargas release, the report is therefore not just false, but conjured to tarnish the image of johesu.
Mr Noblealuu, u need to get ur head examined.

end time things. can someone explain why this brutality is unleashed? the above figures are skewed start with conhess 9 step 2. what is on ground and not what is being proposed should be stated. grievances should be directed to FG & FMOH not to doctors. NMA is not JOHESU employer. fight for your course and not to attract a cause.
Re: JOHESU Members Attack Doctors On Duty In Abuja by chachanga: 7:52pm On Jan 30, 2015
Regardless of hurts, causes or interests being fought for, these JOHESU wanna-be goons are really starting to piss me off. Graduating from advsing members to boycott elections to now attacking folks in the hospital, are these guys ripe for Kirikiri or what?

Watched the JOHESU Lagos spokeman on ChannelsTV the other day and despite all the mental spoon-feeding, nudging and coaxing Maupe and co. gave him, this man could not come up with points to articulate his position, his Union's quest for redress and even how, we the polity, are supposed to view JOHESU'S pain in the whole imbroglio. Instead he was making veiled threats and hinting at resorting to violence if defied/ignored.

Talk about "playing a winning game in a losing way"! Is it a must to use touts with little or no knowledge of the finer points of Industrial Psychology/Relations, Welfarism, Public Service/Personnel Administration etc as EXCO members of these Unions just because of flimsy reasons like - "e get liver?!! shocked"

There are better ways of doing things. A good start might be hiring a good PR Team or attention-hungry lawyer like Dino to package their cause for them instead of the blubbering fools and potential-criminals they're currently fielding as Union leaders right now.

Secondly, what are the law courts for? Go there and keep going back. If jugdements are given but ignored by the EXecutive, go back and get stiffer injunctions.

Third, start your own hashtag/Occupy wars and appeal to every sector of the nation. Reiterate more of what the nation stands to gain if you're properly funded and serviced, instead of posturing as some overly ambitious dummies engaged in an ill-thought war with their "betters?"

Four, if/when the all-or-nothing approach doesn't cut it; OFFER ALTERNATIVES. Don't say there is NO WAY. There will always be ways out for negotiation, at least, until FED. GOVT ups and PRIVATIZES the Federal Hospitals! Is that what JOHESU is working towards, No I should think not! But, astute strategies and well-timed executions are all that's required here not all the blubbering and blustering they're venting.

Besides that, these guys should stop breaking laws. These are supposed to be health sector workers and Life-savers for God's sake not Hitmen. Are they braindead to be tear-gassing hospital wards with Asthma patients possibly around or has this little better-pay struglle turned into bloodlusts? All the tear-gassing should stop forthwith instead let them come across as peace-loving, family-friendly folks who just need to be treated a li'll bit more fairly!

A word is enough for the wise. I believe that that with JOHESU employing strategic approaches like this, all the balls will be shifted into the courts of our "Ogas At the Top (aso-rock)", dat's all!
