The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Wednesday took the former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Chukwuma Soludo, to the cleaners over his criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan’s management of the country’s economy, saying his comments amounted to committing “intellectual hara-kiri”.
The Minister, who spoke through her Special Adviser on Media, Paul Nwabuikwu, accused Mr. Soludo of single-handedly mismanaging the country’s banking sector between May 2004 and May 2009 and plunging the country into “an incredible accumulation of liabilities that will cost tax payers about N5.67 trillion”.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, apparently livid, described the former CBN governor as “an embittered loser in the Nigerian political space” who is “so derailed” to “commit intellectual harakiri by deliberately misquoting economic facts and maliciously turning statistics on their head to justify a hatchet job”.
“Soludo has shamelessly pandered to so many past leaders that Nigerians are asking one more time – what position is Soludo gunning for now?” she asked.
“There is definitely an issue of character with Prof. Charles Soludo and his desperate search for power and relevance in Nigeria. Nigerians should therefore beware of so-called intellectuals without character and wisdom because this combination is fatal,” she added.

She simply was stating the obvious. She is an authority on the subject. Soludo no see her rear light sef.

Just as you are the worst finance minister a country can ever produce. Thank God, you lost the world bank presidential contest, though I supported you as a good Nigerian will, the economy of the world will be in great danger at the moment if you were elected.

Madam will you just sharap! Even an imbe knows you are lying. How much was the $$ when Soludo left office, how much is it now? if Soludo was a porous as you want to make us believe, at least it not obvious to the common man like this present admin.

If you know anything about economics, you will know Sanusi saved our economy.

He had to do the dirty job and clean up after Soludo, and took the tough (unpopular) decisions that were needed.

Ofcourse he had his own failings too, but nothing like Soludo's.


Mrs Iweala too is just another theorist who has underperformed.

The only excuse I can have for Soludo is that most Central Bank Governors across the globe during that era failed to see the problems that were accumulating.

But, he was responsible for Nigeria, so must carry the can for what happened here.


As Mrs Iweala said we are still paying for the excesses of that era and will continue to do so for at least another decade.

But abeg, where is that independent audit report of the NNPC done by PWC?

Attacking the messenger instead of the message is what the guilty does. NOI should prove Soludo with facts after that, then you can begin to debate whether he was/is the worst CBN governor ever.

Confidence level in the banking sector was very high during his time. No bank collapse after his reconsolidation exercise inspite of the global economic crisis. Meanwhile, NOI and FFK should address the issues and leave the non relevant issues.

The usual response from the PDP government. Throw words around, abuse the messenger and never respond to any of the issues raised. Nigerians are smart enough to appreciate the contributions of prof. Charles Soludo during and after his tenure as CBN governor. Ngozi should focus on the issues raised and make effort to leave a good legacy when her time ends on may 28.
