What Did Former CBN Gov Soludo Say That Attracted Attacks From Presidency? by jk18: 8:48pm On Jan 31, 2015
As many may have been wondering what a former CBN governor, Prof Charles Soludo must have done or said to have attracted attacks from the the top aides and associates of president Jonathan.

Here is the gist.

A few days ago Soludo wrote a long article entitled, “Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election” , in which he lashed out on the programmes of the leading political parties in Nigeria, the PDP and the APC, and their presidential candidates, the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

On the PDP and President Jonathan’s re-election bid, Soludo made the following comments amongst others:

1, Today, the combined domestic and external debt of the Federal Government is in excess of $40 billion

2, Abandoned capital projects littered all over the country amount to over $50 billion

3, Poverty incidence and unemployment rate at the moment have attained the worst records in the history of Nigeria

4, The government’s economic team is very weak, dominated by self-interested and self-conflicted group of traders and businessmen, and so-called economic team meetings have been nothing but showbiz time

5, Transformation Agenda is an empty slogan

On the APC and Gen Buhari’s presidential aspiration, Soludo made the following comments amongst others:

1, The APC manifesto contains some good principles and wish-lists, but as a blue print for Nigeria’s security and prosperity, it is largely hollow.

2, Most people who want to vote for Buhari do not know the specifics of what he would offer or how Nigeria would be different under him.

3, I have not heard anything from the APC or Buhari regarding the national conference report or what kind of federalism they envisage for Nigeria.

4, The APC should stop the joke and be realistic on their promises of creating 20,000 jobs per state in the first year, totalling a mere 720,000 jobs for a country where the new entrants into the labour market per annum exceed two million

5, Buhari and his team must realize that they do not yet have a coherent, credible agenda that is consistent with the fundamentals of the economy currently

The former CBN governor concluded his commentary by advising both parties and their presidential candidates to re-work their programmes to conform with the reality of existence of many Nigerians in order to attract more voters and emphasised that Nigeria must survive and prosper beyond Buhari or Jonathan.

Though Soludo clearly did not not spare any party or candidate in his critical piece, he has received barrage of hits from presidential aides such as the minister of finance and head of media and publicity of the president Jonathan’s campaign amongst others who have found the former CBN governor’s opinions on the government too harsh and needless at this time.

The question is must the presidency react angrily to every public opinion especially when it concerns two parties?
