I noticed that my car moves perfectly without any kind of strange noise while on top speed but when i am in traffic, immediately i raise my leg from the brake and press the accelerator, the car makes a "groaning" noise like when a car is struggling to climb a hill;it moves though but the sound is embarrassing and gives me some concern.I also notice that the sound is more when i am using the car ac than when i am not. I complained to my mechanic two days ago and he said it could be due to shortage of transmission oil; we used the opportunity to remove the transmission fluid and replaced with a new one; we also serviced the engine by changing the engine oil and filter. The car however still makes that noise; experts on nairaland;what do you advice please?

Does your transmission shift fine, what kind of engine oil did you use to service the car? What kind of transmission oil did you use to service your gear box? Does the car move sluggishly? Answer all this. But an advice stoo driving that car for now with its present condition

The engine was serviced with mobil super 1000 and the gear with holts ATF. The car doesnt move sluggishly;it performs well while on top speed; i only have this issue of groaning/humning sound while moving gradually in traffic

While I think you need to run a scan on the vehicle to be sure of the issue, I don't think that Mobil super 1000 will be any good for the Engine.
The recommended Engine oil for the ride is Synthetic 5W-40.

I use the Mobil 1 which delivers quality performance.

Thanks all. There is a new development now. I noticed that just when i was about parking the car this morning in the office (i drove all the way from ogba to the island), the work 'BRAKE" came up the dashboard, I parked and switched on the engine again, the gear selector refused to shift from P to any other place. I left the car for about 2 hours then went again, still the gear selector was stiff and wont move and on the dash board i have "ABS BRAKE". Experts in the house please help ! I also found out that the arm brake pedal (which i havent paid any notice to had been up all this while).

Your issues are very clear, you have been dragging this car along with your handbrake on active position..You never can tell the extend of damage that could have occurred.

Secondly, your gear will overwork at this juncture and besides that, holt isn't your recommended atf fluid, it will overheat at such driving condition while exposing your transmission to danger as it create an unnecessary, unwanted friction in your transmission internal mechanism, hence overworking it especially in harsh driving conditions such as hold ups.

Do first thing first:
1. flush your holt atf and replace with original auto transmission fluid for your car, perhabs your car could return back to normal. If it doesn't, you may have to meet your car specialist and have it scan to know what actually you are dealing with and to ascertain the extent of damage done to it for proper fixing.

2. Make sure too that in future you use the recommended engine oil viscosity for your car , as your oil weight at the moment is too heavy for that car ,hence cannot travel through the tiniest crevixes of your crankcase area. This will only create unnecessary tremendous friction within your engine components, and will reduce the lifespan of that engine. Though this may be unrelated to the issue at stake at the moment.

Thanks a million. My mechanic has been able to find away round shifting the gear. When i get home i 'll park the car and get the atf flushed tomorrow and filled with proper atf. I also learnt i need to replace the brake switch

Go to your car check the brake light and see if it comes on when you step on your brake pedal, for the hard shift from park position I concur that you have to change your brake switch

angry

Just kiss the gearbox good bye.
Get ready to kiss your engine goodbye soon.

He shouldn't have even manipulated nor force the gear to shift yet, not untill after you would have flushed the wrong atf and replace with the right one; who knows if the gear would have just been ok on its own , but now , i can only wish you goodluck.
