Chaz Bono was actually born Chastity Sun Bono in 1969 to Sonny and Cher, and is their only child. Bono announced her lesbianism in 1995, wrote a few books on the difficult process of coming out as gay or lesbian, and then underwent female-to-male surgery between 2008 and 2010. A documentary covering the process premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Carmen Carrera was actually born Christopher Roman in 1985. She rose to fame through starring in the reality drag queen show called RuPaul’s Drag Race. Nowadays, Carrera focuses her efforts on modeling and being an activist for AID awareness, as well as regularly appearing on various reality television programs like Cake Boss.

You may have heard of the Wachowski Brothers – Larry and Andy Wachowski, a couple of film directors, screenwriters and producers best known for being the masterminds behind The Matrix franchise and V for Vendetta, among other endeavours. Well, Larry is now Lana Wachowski as of 2008 when her transition from male to female was officially completed.

7. Janet Mock.
People Magazine’s chief editor Janet Mock stunned people everywhere when she announced via a 2011 Marie Claire article that she was born a male, and underwent sex reassignment surgery in Thailand when she was 18 years old. Since then she has become a very popular advocate for LGTB rights.

“I was born in what doctors proclaim is a boy’s body,” she said in the article. “I had no choice in the assignment of my sex at birth. My genital reconstructive surgery did not make me a girl. I was always a girl.”

Amanda Lepore was actually born Armand Lepore, and is a famous model, performance artist, recording artist, and a fashion and nightlife icon – whatever that last one means! Photographer David LaChapelle (not to be confused with our favourite black comedian Dave Chappelle) uses her very regularly in his various photo shoots.

5. Thomas Beatie.
Thomas Beatie is known the world over as the man who gave birth. After having gender reassignment surgery in 2002, Beatie used artificial insemination in 2007 to bear children, as his wife was infertile. He successfully fell pregnant with triplets but unfortunately lost all three fetuses at birth. He has since managed to successfully give birth to three children, however the couple divorced in 2012.

4. Dr Marci Bowers.
Not only is Dr. Marci Bowers seen as one of the key innovators behind transgender surgery, (she is an American gynecologist who regularly conducts gender reassignment surgery on various patients) but she has actually undergone the procedure herself – throughout most of her adult life, she was actually male. Not only that, she was and still is married with three children. It was only at the age of 39 that he became male.

Candis Cayne is arguably one of the more well renowned people in this list, as she is the first transgender actress to play a recurring transgender character in a popular television series (Dirty Sexy Money). She actually had never heard of the term “transsexual” until the mid-nineties, when she heard it and immediately related to it.

Jenna Talackova is the Canadian model you’ve probably heard about… she was the one who successfully beat the courts in a lawsuit over her disqualification from the Miss Universe Canada competition on account of being born male.
