RAT HOUSE ...a poem by Ogbonna
Lazarus

From my corner of our room,
I see the rodents roam
As tenants will do
When their rents are due.

Yes! Our rent was due
So I told the rodent
‘Sir, Rodents don’t rent’
He said, and to his corner went.

To rid the room of rodents
And rid the rodents of rents
I made the rats-bane
But the attempt was vain.

And so we lived rat-racing
The room, half to each
And the rodents out of reach
Until we heard someone knocking.

It was the landlord
Came for his rent
So I handed him my cent
And to my corner went.

“And the other half” he cried!
The room Sir, partitioned
Have we, I and the rodents
Half to each, half to each.

The cents Sir, partitioned
Must we, the rodents and I
Each a rent
Each a cent.

Between The Devil and Deep Blue
Sea_ by Lazarus Ogbonna

Of course
It was love I felt
A heart to fetch
And kept in my tent

That was all I thought
My witness was George
He was a man of church
Said I must not judge

But to make a choice
Between the devil
And deep blue sea
Whichever first I see

Heart of a goddess…a poem by Ogbonna
Lazarus

Men of all colours and kinds
And those of all tribes and clans
Have gathered to war
For the heart of a goddess

The goddess of eternal love
The good and ugly and yet
The wanted and unwanted
Of all seething hands and hearts

Of men, stirred to lay siege
Upon the goddess and her Island
Nine million men fought
And Aphrodite kept watch

And men warred and died

For the gift of the goddess
Gift of eternal life and youth
And I too not in the least
But armed to the teeth

Took my sword and set sail
Warring for the life of my soul
The heart of the goddess
Nothing was left behind

Men warred for love unending
Many lost…and lost their minds
Sinking deep to Davy Jones locker
And be left thereafter with no heart

But the last-man standing

Had life everlasting
As the goddess had his heart
Taken and kept in the chest
There it neither grows old nor dies.
