THE National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu has responded to the assertion by the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) not to be judged based on his past performance.

The party boss insisted in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday that there was no other way someone seeking power could be assessed other than based on his past performance.

Buhari had recently claimed during an interview on Cable News Network (CNN) that it was unfair to judge him by his past record.

According to the statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Tony Amadi, Alhaji Muazu maintained that unlike General Buhari, President Goodluck Jonathan was proud of his past record and is happy to be judged by it.

The PDP boss said: “They say we should not judge them on their past record, but how else can they be judged other than through the work they did in the past. The Jonathan administration is proud of its past record and is happy to be judged by it.

“Why will an opposition party that claims to be agent of change not be judged on its past record in government. What change can they produce without reference to their past record?

“As far as the economy of Nigeria is concerned today, the present administration of President Jonathan is running on a clear record of good performance and should be voted in for a second term.”

Mu’azu also asserted that Jonathan’s performance in the agricultural sector would give him the cutting edge to emerge victorious in next month’s presidential election, challenging the opposition to a debate on the sector.

The statement added: “Whether anyone likes it or not, it is the performance of the PDP in the economy that will give us the cutting edge to victory in the 2015 presidential, governorship and parliamentary elections next month.

“Nigeria didn’t just become the biggest economy in Africa by propaganda or fluke. It happened because of a deliberate plan by the Jonathan administration to bolster the economic standing of our country.

“I challenge the opposition to a debate on the economy; the very crucial indices for measurement of a successful government seeking re-election in most advanced democracies of the world.

“That our economy is rated above South Africa is not therefore a miracle, it was the target President Jonathan gave the economic team led by our Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and they achieved that objective in flying colours,” the statement read.

“It was the economic team that spearheaded the intensification of agriculture to the diversification of our political economy from oil to food and agricultural production on a large scale.

“This is why our country is now producing enough food to feed the nation, exporting the excess and earning foreign exchange. PDP controlled states have tapped into the federal government’s food programme resulting in dry season farming coupled with heavy rice production in states with natural advantages in food production. Government has also invested huge sums to prop APC states with similar advantages.

“It is the successful management of the Nigerian economy that encouraged investors to be pouring in from Europe, America and Asia, particularly China.”

Mu’azu appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) because of the added boost it would give the economy.

He added: “Our opponents in this election have no clue on economic management. The APC has never told us how they will change a winning economic formula that is already on ground and has been acknowledged worldwide.”

@Muazu
Buhari did not say that his past should not be judged, he only said that his action with respect to "alleged" human right abuse as Military Head of State should not be used to judge him as an incoming Civilian President. The Military work without any constitution, decrees are held supreme. In a domocratic government, the constitution and Acts of parliament supercede any law, including executive fiat. Sai Buhari
