Civil Society Help Stop Plot By Lagos Govt, World Bank To Privatise Water by sammiestar: 5:24pm On Feb 19, 2015
The announcement sent a collective sigh of relief to the water corporation staff and civil society activists. After months of negotiation on how to privatize the water supply in Lagos, between the World Bank and the Lagos Water Corporation, the bank has called off the talks.

But before the bank’s decision, activists and civil servants had mounted pressure on the water company against such a move, which they said would raise the cost of having access to water beyond the reach of ordinary Lagosians.

The Corporation’s staff, who stood to lose their jobs, went a step further to threaten to do “everything to frustrate” the move.

Last month, the World Bank issued a statement announcing a breakdown in talks between its International Finance Corporation and the Lagos Water Corporation.

“Contrary to recent reports, IFC has not signed any agreement with the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC),” the bank said in the statement. “LWC expressed interest in working with IFC and we had a number of discussions on how we might be able to assist the company. In the end, IFC decided not to advise LWC. We continue to support the government and people of Nigeria in achieving their development goals.”

According to civil society groups, water privatization negates the 2010 United Nations recognition of water as a fundamental human right.

“If the IFC was successful in securing a large-scale water PPP in Lagos, it would mirror that of the electricity sector privatization, which has imposed sky-rocketing electricity bills without delivering improved service,” Mr. Oluwafemi said.

“The IFC’s track record in the water sector is frightening: prices sky rocket, utility workers lose their jobs, water quality suffers, low-income communities have their water shut off, governments incur devastating debt, and public sovereignty is threatened by undemocratic arbitration.

“Privatization is not the solution for Lagos: it leads to corporate profits and has never provided universal access.

Additionally, if the IFC deal (had sailed) through, it would have opened the doors for several contracts for water corporations to take over the water system, and bidding by 2015.”

On the positive side, Privatization is going to bring about better distribution as well as better quality of water to Lagosians, on the negative side, there will be a synonymous increase in price so Lagosians should choose what they want.

Before Tinubu became the governor of Lagos state we had tap water running in our compound, few months after he became the governor we stopped getting water from water cooperation till date.we had to rely on meruwa then later had to dig a borehole and i can see that that is not enough for him (my mind tells me this is his brain child)now he wants to enslave lagosians by controlling water supply and hike the bills as usual.
The way things are going in this lagos their is one thing i know that will happen for sure if nothing is done soon and that is EVERYONE WHO OWNS A BOREHOLE WILL SOON BE FORCED TO PAY 'BOREHOLE TAX'.

If they can privatize it and give us good water, then I fully support it.
What's the essence of the water we have now and you can't drink freely from the tap without the fear of disease gripping you.

People prefers govt who provide no potable water to the one who asks that an amount be paid for services and provides it.

Everything can not be free. No one will force anyone to key in to a service, it is not compulsory you access a service, if you feel you cant afford it.

First things first, the rate at which people reserve space on the zeroth page of an important thread is getting alarm. I think a moderator should do the needful. Attention: seun, ishilove, etc.

On the main matter at hand, I think the Civil Society got this one wrong. There are very very very very few places in Lagos with pipe-borne water supplied by Lagos Water Corporation. Over 90% of houses in Lagos State do not have water provided by the utility company. Water supply requires huge investments and dedicated management; consequently, privatisation is the perfect solution. If the Civil Society is interested in ensuring that the poor get their fair share, then they should fight to make Lagos State Government to provide water subsidy for the poor using water stamps.

I keep telling people to be wary of any World Bank or IMF suggested projects - many such schemes ravaged Asia and Latin America in the late 90s/early 2000s. The World Bank/IMF exists to make money for their donor nations (see investors).

Bolivia went through a traumatic time with the water privatization scam - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_privatization_in_Bolivia
