Konnektions146:he is not arrogant at all. believe he totally understand what a nirse undergoes at the hands of patients. and remember some of the things a nurse tells the patients are actually enforced by the institutions. e.g patient relatives should not sit on the bed, sending visitors back when is not visiting time e.t.c. but it falls on the nurse to relate these things and most relatives takes offence just becos it does not suit them. |

Phlegmwash: I second you! Worse thing is we are all going round being rude and calling other people rude. Someone was recounting how she gave a 'small girl' a slap for being rude. Just shows you our mentality, so if it was an elderly woman would you give her a slap? The correct terminology is 'adult' not small girl, is she is too small to cater to your needs why did you approach her in the first place? If she was treated like an 'adult' she would probably have had a nicer attitude in the first place. Everywhere you see Nigerians it is the same "who is this small girl talking to?' 'Hey you come here and serve me now' 'do you know who i am?' 'I am older enough to be your father' The list of comments is endless, meanwhile they are in church every sunday throwing away their tithes away wondering why God is ignoring them |

Bofemsky: The nature of their work is trying to work in a highly charged environment surrounded by people who are worried about their health or that of their relatives to the point of being irrational and abusive. They are human too and deserve better treatment like any other worker out there. Have you ever smiled at someone and they snarled back at and shouted at you? even if you smile at a stranger in the streets they will smile back at you. It's difficult to understand, yes indeed you may be sick but you are not the only one who is sick nor are you necessarily the sickest person in the hospital. Nurses are nurses not attendants or maids. It is not really their job to fetch your mobile phone from your bag, to feed you and wash you etc. DO you need a nursing degree for any of these tasks? Thats the work of a healthcare assistant or auxiliary nurse. Nurses may do this because they are humane and yes the drug chart says drugs at 0800 like the rest of the 24 patients in the ward, so how do you expect her to give everyone their drugs at the same 0800? Or speak to 3 sets of relatives of the same patient who come in one after the other every hour and ask about their mother with malaria instead of speaking amongst themselves and sharing information. A bit of common sense, being polite and reevaluation of our own selfish expectations will make the working environment more pleasant and the nurses less stressed. Nurses are human too and if they are insulted or treated like dirt they will do the same to you, nurse does not mean accept bad manners and behaviour from patients and relatives. They are not paid for that, they are not even paid enough ..and no i am not a nurse |

skillzbae: So tell me do you slap any of your staff on a regular basis? Also if i came in to your business and slapped your staff for whatever reason because i felt she was rude would you accept such behaviour? By the way there are rude nurses abroad, but not as many as in Nigeria, moreover a few noticeable ones among them are Nigerians who may have just arrived or are indeed set in their bad ways. They usually end up with a reprimand or being sanctioned by the nursing and midwifery council. The pay is better so they also learn to be more appreciative and respectful especially when they consider the alternatives in Nigeria - poor pay with verbal and physical insults. That notwithstanding, Nigerian nurses abroad are generally well behaved apart from a few bad eggs. The nurses abroad are overworked too and they are also subject to abuse but the hospital management does not tolerate such behaviour. The last person who assaulted a nurse doing her duty, rude or not spent 9 months in prison for assault so count yourself lucky! 1 Like |

Phlegmwash: I totally agree with this.Nigerian employers don't take customer service training seriously.People tend to behave as if they are doing you a favour.Another thing,I think there's something about being in uniform that makes some Nigerians go crazy 1 Like |

I used to believe nurses are rude until I spent a day in the hospital. Most patients abuse their rights and privileges. That aside, most of the functions carried out by nurses are meant for Ward attendants and not nurses. No doubt, some nurses are straight from the pit of hell but we have people like that in every profession. A little reasonable behavior from the patients would go a long way. Imagine attending to her first patient in the morning and with a smile she asked Hope you are feeling better today just to calm the patient and ease the tension and the patient replies with are you blind? Do I look okay to you and hissed... it takes the grace of God not to let that get to you. Nurses are no robot neither are they supernatural beings....they are humans just like you and I. 1 Like |

Konnektions146: You accuse me of being rude, i defend myself and you tell me i am being arrogant because i do not agree with you? where's the logic there? did i tell you i am better than you? All I see is people claiming a holier than thou attitude, and describing how they slapped someone because they were rude etc just because someone has taken up nursing doesn't mean she should accept insults. If i slapped everyone who i felt was rude I would have a sore arm by the time i get home everyday and i am sure that even i have come across rude to some people at some point because i am not perfect. So let me agree with you.. yes i don't know you and you don't know me and our paths may never cross but if they do and i am 'rude' to you please talk to me and do not slap me I, on my part can't accuse you of anything to which i do not have evidence of nor will i resort to calling you names because i can't get my point across, it is simply not my nature. My main point in all this is, we all have a duty to be polite and respectful at all times, even if the person annoying us or being obstructive is a 'small girl' in our eyes. we do not have to resort to physical violence. This also includes people we interact with online or in person. To whom much is given much is expected, this applies to everyone regardless of your job, vocation or calling, myself included whether you are a nurse, self employed, a CEO, a client or a customer Thank you 1 Like |
