Interpol trails el-Rufai to US
Lanre Adewole, Abuja
Monday, January 12, 2009
THE International Police (Interpol) have reportedly trailed former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, to the United States of America, contrary to reports that he was in the United Kingdom.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had declared him wanted over an alleged N32 billion fraud while in office. The commission subsequently enlisted the cooperation of the Interpol to get him arrested.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the Interpol had been communicating with the anti-corruption agency since the latter was able to prove that el-Rufai actually jumped bail in Nigeria after he was released on bail in June 20, 2008.

The latest information from Interpol to EFCC about the former minister’s whereabouts, according to sources close to the commission, stated that he currently stays in a hidden residence in Boston, USA.

The reports being circulated by those close to him said that he was residing in the United Kingdom. Apart from his abode in Boston, el-Rufai was also said to have been traced to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where he reportedly made several trips to meet with some of his associates.

The associates are said to be responsible for movement of documents from Nigeria to him abroad. The commission had said that el-Rufai was wanted “for abuse of office and misappropriation public funds to the tune of N32 billion.”

A statement signed by EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, read “The need to declare el-Rufai wanted became imperative following his failure to honour a simple invitation from the commission to respond to weighty allegations levelled against him in petitions being investigated by the commission.”

The commission had summoned el-Rufai to appear before it on November 28, 2008. The commission claimed that instead of honouring the invitation, the former minister wrote back through his counsel, requesting the commission to send its questions to him.

He based his request on his participation in an examination abroad. Babafemi further noted that “this prompted the commission to grant him another three weeks grace. But instead of seizing the opportunity to respond to the weighty allegations against him, he has resorted to a hide-and-seek game and an appalling show of impunity on the pages of newspapers.”

Speaking on the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), el-Rufai dared the commission, saying that he would not honour the invitation.

According to him, “I am a student; I cannot leave my studies to come to Nigeria to answer questions from anybody because I am not a government employee.”

Nigerians seem not in anyway ready to learn from the pasts. What is el Rufai hiding from? The answer is "nothing." I should put it in another way: "what is police/efcc hiding?"

Ribadu was declared wanted and treatened with interpol. The man is back in Nigeria and no one hear any foolish noise from efcc/police again. No more story of misapproriated efcc fund. He is walking the street now, fighting his sack (something the police considered abomination).

When Igbinedon fled the country and left no trace of his where about, the police/efcc declared him wanted and sent Interpol after him. The man is back in the country walking free, enjoying his loot.

With all the noise about Obj corroption, especially the oil and power deals, he is right in the confinement of his office, enjoying his retirement and walking free. No one have gone to quiz him on anything. Same go to kalu, odili etc.

It seem to me the efcc/police enjoy chasing shadow. When the people are within their grip, the least you hear is that they are detained for days and then released thereafter to enjoy their lives. The real culprits are in the country, untouched.

I am one of those who consider police as careless noise makers. The only job they do better is propaganda.

El Rufai is not in exile. He will surely return home this year. And when he return, I am sure you will find out that all these noise are afterall cheap propaganda to make the feel that they are fighting corruption.

i bet you guys that if el-rufai isn't captured, his program as foreign student would run for exactly 4 years (till yaradua's term ends). and if yaradua wins the next presidential election, i also bet you that el-rufai would immediately register for another program that would also run for another 4 years. i mean, you can never learn too much while you enjoy stolen money. the truth of this matter is, el-rufai can not afford to answer any question at this time. any answer coming from this man will immediately bring down too many people e.g ribadu, ex ig e.t.c. ribadu is currently taking or being given a break till el-rufai is captured. i think el-rufai is the missing puzzle.
question: if el-rufai is so busy in school studying, what the hell was he doing in dubai? he has visited dubai at least 3 times since he has been placed on wanted list. without any question, this man has alot to hide from.

EFCC raids el-Rufai’s company, arrests 6

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday raided a company, Systems Property Development Consortium, believed to be owned by former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

Six persons, including the Managing Director, Mallam Idris Uthman, were arrested. Commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed the raid and arrest, saying that the move had to do with an on-going investigation involving the former minister.

The commission had also declared him wanted in connection with an alleged N32 billion fraud while in office. The company, located at Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, was reportedly raided at noon on Monday and documents relating to land allocations in the FCT and minutes of ministerial meetings during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo were said to have been recovered from the office.

Sources close to the raid also revealed that thousands of FCDA’s official documents, list of revoked lands in Abuja as well as documents on contracts awarded by el-Rufai as minister, were recovered by the commission’s operatives.

Also reportedly recovered were documents relating to the probe of his tenure as minister by the Senate Committee on FCT and land allocation forms in their thousands, already filled by applicants.

It was gathered that documents and computers moved from the office revealed that el-Rufai was the brains behind the company, which he had allegedly used as a link between the ministry and land applicants while in office.

Nigerian Tribune sources also disclosed that intelligence reports revealed that the company was used by the former minister in perpetrating illegal activities while in office, especially on the re-allocation of revoked land in the FCT.

It was alleged that el-Rufai was in the habit of re-allocating revoked land to the company, which in turn either sold at the black market prices or developed them into estates.

The sources used as an example, a portion of land originally allocated to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at Jabi Lake Front, Asokoro, which was revoked and re-allocated to alleged 45 fictitious persons, who in turn allegedly sold all their allocations to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

It was learnt that documents recovered at the office proved that the company was being used to extort applicants for land in Abuja, especially the land allocation forms already filled by applicants, which were said to have been for a fee.

At press time, only the Managing Director and one Bayo, a member of staff, were still being detained.
