Does Justification By Faith Abolish The Sabbath? by otr1(m): 6:46pm On Mar 13, 2015
Paul said a man is not justified by
the work of the law but through
faith in Jesus(Gal. 2:16), but does
being justified by faith mean a
Christian is free to sin as much as he or
she pleases?
Paul didn't think so. "What shall
we say then? Are we to continue
in
sin that grace might increase?...
(Rom. 6:12)
How does this arguement prove
that Christians need not observe
the
Sabbath, but still avoid adultery,
theft and murder? Just because
obeying a law doesn't justify us
doesn't mean we don't have to
obey
it. Law can't save us, but it tell us
what to do and not do.
James explained that the Law
was a spiritual mirror that tells us
how
to improve our behavior. He
called it the "Law of Liberty".
(James
1:25)
the Law defines sin(Rom. 7:7,
5:12, 3:20, 4:15). Hence if Jesus'
death
cancelled the whole law, not just
the penalty of the law assessed
for
violating it when one accepts His
sacrifice by faith, no one would
have sinned since His death and
resurrection in AD 31.
It's necessary to carefully analyze
soteriologically, terms such as
"grace," "law," faith,"
"repentance," and "justification,"
and put
them into their correct logical
relationship with each other.
True sabbath obeying doesn't
earn salvation, neither does
avoiding
adultery or murder. But God still
wants us to obey all Ten
Commandments nevertheless.
Didn't Jesus keep the Sabbath?
(Luke 4:16; Mark 2:27-28)
Having Jesus in us doesn't mean
we don't need to make conscious
efforts to overcome sin.
Christians are not under the law,
but under grace, true, but how
does
this principle releases us from
obeying the sabbath, but not
from
avoiding adultery?
Paul made a point of anticipating
how this principle could be
abused
in Romans 6:15.
Paul uses the term "under the
law" in places to a state in which
someone hasn't been forgiven
for their sins and is still not
reconciled to God by accepting
Jesus.
The law defines what is and what
isn't sin, since sin is lawlessness
(1 John 3:4)
Since "the requirement of the law
would be fulfilled

...in us, who do not
walk according to the flesh but
according to the spirit"-Rom 8:4-
Christians are to stop sinning.
The overwhelming point of (Gal.
4:4, 21) was to prove that
Gentiles
didn't neee to receive
circumcision (note the bottomline
conclusion in
Gal 5:2, 11:12)
The fact that Jesus kept the
sabbath is evidence that we
should also,
since " the one who says he
abides in Him ought himself to
work in the
same manner as He walked"(1
John 2:6; 1 Peter 2:21)
How exactly did Jesus "fulfill" the
law? Did He abolish the law by
obeying it? He denies this kind of
interpretation in Matthew 5:17:
"do
not think that I come to abolish
the law or the prophets; I did not
come to abolish the law but to
fulfill". If the word "fulfull" means
"abolish", or something close to
it, then Christ contradicted
Himself:
"I did not come to abolish, but to
(abolish)"
Knowing Jesus doesn't mean
we're free to disobey any and all
of God's
laws and commandments. "And
by this we know that we have
come to know
Him, if we keep His
commandments. The one who
says, 'I have come to
know Him', and does not keep
His commandments, is a liar, and
the
truth is not in him; but whoever
keeps His words, in him the love
of
God has been perfected. By this
we know that we are in Him."(1
John
2:3-4)
Hence, obedience to God's
commandments is a requirement
to really
know Jesus. Similarly, Jesus
Himself said: You are my friends,
if you
do what I command you(John
15:14)
likewise, He proclaimed to a
crowd listening to Him: "For
whoever does
the will of my Father who is in
heaven, he is my brother and
sister
and mother"(Matt. 12:50)
Does being Christ-centered
magically changes the contents of
the law's
requirements by itself? Not a
chance. The conclusion simply
doesn't
follow from the premises.

All the bastard Yorubas faulting Oba Akiolu's outrage, what would you do if some slaves are saying this about your Kingdom?

The time is ripe to know if the Yorubas are the real owners of Lagos or it's a no man's land.

If you're Ibo and you know what's good for you, steer clear of the polls in Lagos this weekend. You are warned!!!

otr1,
I have never looked at the Sabbath question from the perspective of the ten commandments. We agree that we should abide with the rest of these commandments. But why not the Sabbath?

This is my thought. The rest of the commandments address morality and spiritual inclination while the law of the Sabbath is more of a commemorative action. Which is not bad.

Secondly, there has been confusion as to what day is the actual sabbath day as the keeping and recording of time has changed over the years.

Third, I believe the most important part of that command is to keep it holy
It is the reason why we should remember the sabbath.

Now that brings the main question. How? How to keep the Sabbath holy? And what is holiness. There is the answer as to who is really keeping the Sabbath as commanded. It also answers the question of grace. The gift of holiness is a grace from God. So in fact, the justification of grace actually fulfils the law of the sabbath more perfectly that the early Israelites.
