Until software developers can grow out of their geek culture and learn to be innovators and entrepreneurs, there is no hope competing against foreign competition.
The geek culture in software development is not unique to Nigeria. The geek culture in Silicon Valley hasn't stopped Google from doing well.

The software development aspect of ICT actually doesn't require much power. How much power does a laptop require?

How many data centers do we have in Nigeria?

Do you know that I hardly see 24 hours of light for a week?

Yes, less than 24 hours for the whole week somewhere in Calabar.

He won't understand because He can afford 50 litres of petrol for a day. He doesn't mind if there is light or not.

When I have less than 24 hours light for the whole week..

I buy fuel at the rate of 100 NGN per litre.

Data centers don't have to be in Nigeria except for sensitive businesses like banking. It makes a lot of sense to use data centers in countries where electricity is very cheap for most web-based businesses. The cost of hosting is insignificant compared to what you can make online.

True words Sir. May your days be long.
Only if their can understand and lose their selfish interest in crude oil.
Nigeria is our country. No outside will construct it for us.
Let's build for the future Now.
God Bless Nigeria.

All the same, I know that someday we will get it right.

Why are you buying fuel @ that rate? There should be price regulation across the Country

Yes. A laptop draws less than 60w of power. That suggests a 600va generator which costs less than 14k and uses little fuel can power up to 8 laptops while drawing an insignificant amount of fuel. To work from 8am to 5pm I don't think you'll spend up to 1000 naira daily on petrol.

We can invest more on this sector and train these guys. It takes about 1 Year to fully train an IT professional from novice to professional, then Let him develop and perfect with experience, and it is something Nigeria can do.

An IT professional is not a professional techgineer angryangryangry

Nigeria needs skilled programmers not IT professionals..

These are some core areas of specialization for IT Professionals, we need more than software developers:

1. CYBER, SYSTEM AND NETWORK SECURITY AND FORENSICS
2. DATA CENTER OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
3. DATA MANAGEMENT AND ANALYTICS
4. DIGITAL SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY AND EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
5. IT ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
6. MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
7. NETWORKING, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
8. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
9. SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION
10. SYSTEMS ANALYSIS
11. WEB DESIGN AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT

our database construction Is poor. Compiler construction is nothing to write home about and so many other problems. Investing in software developing is a waste of money because Nigeria can't stand the competition in that aspect. Lol even our operation system contruction is bad. grin

All those good points mean little if all out IT culture is not organized on a global standard.

I dont quite agree with you, i think if government supports us, there will be more positive results - the kind seun osewa is talking about. I dont wish to create so much arguments here, but our environment at the moment is very harsh for programmers any way you wish to look at it.

We already have (take it from a guy that codes literarily on the streets, i hear lots of stuffs and am very much up to date), what we lack is bodies (governmental or private) to invest into such. Without funding, there is nothing that will happen to those ideas except to die a natural death out of frustration.

The IT field is not a local niche. You can practically sell a great e-solution or product in the global market square. Work local, but think global. Thanks.
