The Nigerian Army was one of the institutions that played a role in the certificate saga of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari before the presidential election that held on May 28.
When the demand for his certificate became rife, he, just as he had done in the previous elections to INEC, referred his critics to the Nigerian Army that has his records. Buhari was in the Nigerian Army from 1962 to 1985 when, as Head of State, he was overthrown in a palace coup. It is believed in some quarters that soon after his overthrow by Ibrahim Babangida, his house was searched and important documents, including his certificates were made away with.
Initially after the noise about his certificate, the Nigerian Army said it had his record. Later, it made a U-turn. Even when his critic started saying he didn't have a WASC which would have qualified him into the army, the Nigerian Army didn't stand up to say it only recruits academically qualified people.
Why did the Nigerian Army treat one of its best, that even rose to the position of Head of State this way? How would the people's general now view the army?

The same thing giving Gen. Obasanjo and other ex military men concern. In Obasanjo's letter, he told the President-elect to cleanse the military institution of the rotten eggs and disrespect.

Apart from the attitude the army put up in the certificate saga of Buhari, there is the issue of it being used to rig election for the PDP. Not only will some of these army officers be retired, they will be court martialled.

Soja go soja come, barracks remain. Those top generals will be packing their things now cos they know. A change of regime usually means a purge of certain institutions especially this regime that is coming wth brooms.

It would definitely be frosty right now and both parties would hit a few bumps trying to smoothen things out, but it cannot deteriorate to a point he goes into DHQ guns blazing and sacking everything that breathes.

Buhari must understand the sentiments of Nigerians. Jonathan effectively disarmed him by quickly conceding defeat in the election, it was what no one expected. Regardless of all the sins he has committed in the past, he now projects this image of a hero of democracy and indeed a good man. You simply can't imagine the number of lives he musta saved by that singular move.

Now, he has somewhat succeeded in nudging public sentiment in his direction and any action taken against his men would be seen as a veiled attack on him and judged unfair, portraying the General in very bad light. Such words as ungrateful, petty, and vindictive would then be used to describe his persona, and that is what he (Buhari) doesn't need at the moment.

Heads must roll at the top echelon of the military, deservedly so, we understand that, but they must not roll too quickly. Nigerians are too emotional and sentimental. They cannot handle justice being dispensed in such quick succession. And this is why the Ekiti case must be handled with caution else the general gets his hands fried. Let the HoA handle that.

GEJ politicized the NA, maybe because it's seen as the only institution that has to be destroyed if you want to break the country. Look at the appointments of Minimah and Badeh. It was said that dozens of their seniors were bypassed just to serve some sinister motives.

He has to purge most of the Top brass, the army should never have been used in this manner, the problem had degenerated to the extent that there was already underground shimmering in the army, lot of senior officers were angry at how the army was being dragged into the election . Thank God buhari won , nothing will happen on the 22nd, Nigeria has chosen a new leader .

Wise counsel. You do understand the cogitation of Nigerians.

The general should handle these issues with caution.

If he wants to cause a serious dislocation of the army which coincidentally is on a good momentum against BH let him go ahead chopping off heads...experienced heads...invariably blunting off the sharp edge that is the commanding cosmopolitan structure of the Nigerian Army.Worse still we expect, is filling up those spaces with northerners who lack merit but are considered due to their religion and ethnicity.

Be that as it may, the Chief of Army Staff that may replace Minimah won't because he wouldn't want Buhari to be seen as wanting to take his pound of flesh, not make any officer that erred to be court martialled.

The army must be fundamentally restructured, we shouldn't forget that a monumental corruption was orchestrated, the corruption claimed lives of both army officers and civilians so it is beyond the issue of revenge but of justice
