Gun-toting security personnel have been drafted to Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, following the kidnapping of five personnel of the oil company by unknown gunmen.

The kidnapping occurred 20 hours after the presidential and parliamentary elections took place.

THISDAY gathered that the incident took place on Monday at a Floating Storage and Offloading Vessel (FSO) in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Sources said five indigenous personnel who were working offshore at the FSO were kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be roving militants.
A source said following the incident, the management of ExxonMobil decided to shut down operations.

According to the source, the management was scared of further invasions by the militants and related post-election violence.

“They are scared that the militants will attack them again. Since they kidnapped five oil workers at the offshore, they have been thinking that they might attack them again onshore. That is why they shut down production,” the source said.
It was equally gathered that the company’s security department had advised its management to bring all the vessels together to avert further kidnapping of personnel by the militants in the area.

“Any vessel that is actively working, Mobil should now have three anchorages so that those vessels will be under security watch.

“Each of the anchorages will not stand close to each other so that they can be under security watch in order to forestall militants coming close to the vessels,” the source added.

Boys gone crazy... This will really be bad for Nigeria.. People will say Buhari will wipe out these boys, they forget that the pipes are not safe anymore... The pipes in Nigeria is Nigeria's number one source of income. Which way Nigeria?

I dey fear to go there, action close to my vessel. I had envisage this should GEJ lose elections and now the reality is before us. My prayer is that they should not resort to throwing bombs at the vessels to disrupt oil production or better still they should tell people working in those vessels to evacuate before bombing. I dey fear

The incoming govt should reach out to those militants and make concessions to them. Even if the government has the military might it will take just one man (militant) alone to blow up pipelines if he can make bombs.

I think its the current situation that's causing this. They accepted the outcome of a rigged election, and the so-called winners rained insults on the south, its not Akpabio's job, its Nigeria's job.

All these fear of Buhari campaign needs to stop. Nobody is scared of him in the creeks. We should all preach peace.

Have you ever imagine that these creek foot soilders could level all oil installations in just three days and leave the creeks before the troops arrive. They could even relocate to non producing states while the wreckage the left behind will mess the incoming government up for the next four years.

Enough of the fear of Buhari campaign, if we must avoid the impending hardship in the next 4 yrs. ..... peace is the ONLY option. Buhari's force cannot stop it.

Good for the ss, continue to ruin your region and in particular destroy the amazing developments achieved by akpabio in akwa ibom. In the coming months, you would see how buhari will be busy attracting industries to the north, and also awarding billion dollar infrastructure projects in the north. By the time all oil workers abandon your region, and you succeeded in destroying the pipelines, most of those expats and the few snacks industries you have will relocate to the north. Nigeria will simply impose a blockade on your region and continue milking the numerous nigerian oil rigs in the atlantic. nothing will change
