Does anyone have opinions on possible major conflict flash point in West Africa due to the confluence of radical islamic fundamentalism/terrorism, Vagana group, the Mali, Burkina Fasso, Niger coalition, long term, and Sierra Leone/ Sierra diamonds?

Crucial topic you've raised here mate !

The height of insecurity in some West African country is becoming more alarming.
Years back it was Nigeria and its neighbour's battling BHTs, now the terrorists group has been degraded to an extent.

Mali is the new theatre for a deadly terrorist sect, judging by the landlocked and shear size of this desert/mountainous country: its a perfect breathing ground for terrorist.

In all honesty I doubt if the country has the economic will and military strength to defeat terrorist occupations on their land ? The frequent attacks on military formations and innocent life's reminds me of the dark days way back in Nigeria.

Just today some reports from Mali Sahel; shows reckage of a Malian Air Force's Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' (TZ-25C) subsonic jet was shot down in Gao by Azadaw (CMA) militias.

Noteably, unconfirmed photo of a MANPADS owned/used by the militias was also released; which shows a rare USA-made FIM-43 'Redeye' MANPADS.

Like I said the size of the country, mountainous terrain and unchecked cross border activities are source of concern for me, terrorist group can easily smuggle in weapons and foreign fighters.

Let's take Algeria and Egypt has good examples of countries doing everything to check border activities to get rid of weapons smuggling and inflow of foreign fighters, I can remember few years back of posting Algeria CION across their borders, how they eliminated terrorist fighters in their hidden sleeper sells, discovering buried cached weapons etc the commitment was great during the advent of ISIS. These country rose up to the challenges, am not sure we West African countries are ready for this tide that is coming.

At any rate, neocolonialism has done it damage.. that can't be denied.
It either they give full independence, there is nothing like partial independence.. I think France refusal to let go has caused the slow pace of political, constitutional and military development of these concerned nation as a people...
Although one can argue that France is not a direct consequence of this insecurity... But if one takes an in depth look at these events u would see pint of blame in any direction u look
Majority of the countries suffering in Africa were Or are Francophones, so the question that keeps coming up is why?

Much better discourse than that one who feels too big to explain his own point.

I'd like to draw a parallel to the earlier days of fighting BH. There was a new excuse every other day.

"It's religion. It's the sponsors. It's the US blocking us. It is UFOs resupplying them."

Beneath that was $2.1bn looted. Obsolete tactics etc etc

You'd find the same in those countries. At least Mali and BFA have been "liberated". If the politics was all that mattered should we not be seeing changes now?

The more things change, the more they stay the same

AIR STRIKES TARGET REMNANT OF TERRORISTS AT SUWA IN BORNO STATE

In a bid to further dislodge the remnant of terrorists in the Northeast and clear the Region of the remaining terrorists, insurgents and other criminals, an early morning air strike was conducted by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai at Suwa in Kala Balge Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State on 11 September 2023. It may be recalled that Suwa was a stronghold of Boko Haram Terrorists in Gezuwa general area near Sambisa Forest until its dislodgement by the military and other security agencies. Recent intelligence, however, revealed the massing up of terrorists within the area with likely plans to attack troops on patrol along major routes to Bama and Mafa LGA. Further intelligence also revealed that the same group of terrorists had perfected plans to attack troops stationed around Rann in Kalabalge LGA. Accordingly, air strikes were authorized with confirmatory assessments revealing several terrorists neutralised and structures destroyed thereby degrading their ability to attack friendly forces and innocent law abiding civilians.

Nigerian Navy will soon take delivery of a Leonardo AW-109 Trekker helicopter with Reg: NN503.
This procurement is interesting, as there were no prior announcements, which is unusual given the Navy's recent practice of publicly disclosing major acquisitions.

US military resumes drone, crewed aircraft operations in post-coup Niger.

Aljazeera

US reaches agreement with Niger’s military leaders to restart drone, crewed aircraft missions at two airbases.

The United States military has resumed operations in Niger, flying drones and other aircraft out of airbases in the country more than a month after a coup halted activities, the head of Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa said.
Since the July coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum, the approximately 1,100 US soldiers deployed in the West African country have been confined to their military bases.
General James Hecker said on Wednesday that negotiations with the military rulers of Niger resulted in some intelligence and surveillance missions resuming.

“For a while, we weren’t doing any missions on the bases, they pretty much closed down the airfields,” Hecker told reporters at the annual Air and Space Forces Association convention.
“Through the diplomatic process, we are now doing, I wouldn’t say 100 percent of the missions that we were doing before, but we’re doing a large amount of missions that we’re doing before,” he said.
Hecker said the US is flying both crewed and unmanned missions and that those flights resumed “within the last couple of weeks”.
The Pentagon said last week that some US forces were moved from Air Base 101 near the capital Niamey, to another base, Airport 201, in Agadez.
Agadez is located about 920km (some 570 miles) northeast of Niamey.

The US military has made Niger a primary regional outpost for its patrols with armed drones and other operations against fighters and rebel movements that have seized territory in the region, killed civilians and fought the armed forces.
West Africa recorded more than 1,800 rebel attacks in the first six months of this year, which killed nearly 4,600 people, according to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
France, which remains an ally of ex-President Bazoum, has approximately 1,500 soldiers in Niger. Declaring its continued support for the removed president, officials in Paris have called the coup and its officials illegitimate.
Niger’s military leaders have also called for the French military to leave the country.
Speculation has swirled that France will be forced into a full military withdrawal, with a French defence ministry source saying last week that the French army was holding talks with Niger’s military over pulling out “elements” of its presence in the country.

So much for Africa revolution. undecided. Shouldn't some of these African nations that are used to casting aspersions at Nigeria, calling Nigeria Western puppet (yes this is common on social media) shouldn't they demonstrate thire unpuppetness by ridding themselves of foreign military bases ?
