PRESS RELEASE
6 DIVISION NIGERIAN ARMY INTENSIFIES OPERATIONS AGAINST CRIMINAL ELEMENTS WITHIN ITS AREA OF OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

1. In line with its constitutional mandate, barely 2 months after its formal operationalization, the 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt has stepped up operations to deter various criminal acts being perpetrated within its Area of Responsibility (AOR). These operations include; Anti-Illegal Oil Bunkering, Anti-Kidnapping, Anti Robbery, Anti-Cultism, Anti- Piracy as well as Stop and Search Operations against other sundry crimes being committed against law-abiding and peace loving citizens of the Niger Delta with huge successes recorded so far.

2. Most recently on 4 September 2017, troops of 6 Division Garrison, Port Harcourt on routine Anti-Bunkering patrol to Elechi and Abonnema Wharf discovered and destroyed several quantities of suspected illegally refined Automated Gas Oil. In a similar operation conducted by troops of 29 Battalion Tactical Headquarters, Bille, Rivers State troops encountered armed illegal bunkerers short of Feropkakama a notorious bunkering site, who on sighting troops opened fire. However, the gallant troops repelled the attack and pursued the scampering criminals deep in to the creeks with many of them sustaining gun shot wounds. Unfortunately, 2 brave soldiers were wounded in action, one of them critically but both are responding positively to treatment at a military facility in Port Harcourt.

3. In another development, troops of 3 Battalion (Rear), Warri continue to dominate their AOR with the conduct of Stop and Search Operations with a view to maintaining the fragile peace that exists in the area and to identify, detect and intercept criminals, arms and ammunition within the area. This proactive measure has significantly reduced attacks on innocent communities particularly along Ogbe-Ijoh and Aladja boundary, Isaba community, Mofor, Okwuokwuoko, Warri/Sapele and other notable hot spots around Warri metropolis.

4. In a follow-up operation conducted on 5 September 2017 by troops of 29 Battalion Tactical Headquarters, Bille, Rivers State to the notorious illegal bunkering site at Feropkakama Camp where the troops had an encounter the previous day, more success was recorded as troops discovered 14 Pump Action catridges, 4 empty AK 47 magazines, 8 pumping machines and several other illegal bunkering tools while a massive manhunt in conjunction with other sister security agencies is under way to track down and arrest the fleeing criminals in order to bring them to justice.

5. In a related development, troops of 130 Battalion in Harris Town, Rivers State arrested one of the notorious kidnap kingpins known as Mr David Owhor AKA Chile who along with his gang members (at large) have been terrorising innocent people along East-West Road between Port Harcourt and Choba general area. The suspect is currently in military custody making useful confessions and assisting security agencies in making tremendous progress in the investigation that will lead to the eventual arrest of other gang members.

6. The Division wishes to thank all peace loving citizens of the region particularly those that are voluntarily assisting the Command with vital and timely information that is aiding us to achieve positive results in our efforts to protect lives and properties of all citizens and create a conducive atmosphere for peaceful co-existence. The Command also wishes to restate it's commitment to crushing all forms of crime against the Niger Delta people by criminal elements within the region.

7. You are kindly requested to disseminate the above information to the general public for awareness. Thank you for your usual cooperation.

Deputy Director Army Public Relations.

NAF HOLDS THIRD QUARTER MEETING WITH FIELD COMMANDERS, ANNOUNCES COMMENCEMENT OF OPERATION RUWAN WUTA IN NORTH EAST

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today held its 2017 Third Quarter meeting with Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding (AOCs) and Commanders of various NAF units. The meeting, which was presided over by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, was to review the progress made by the Service since the last meeting that was held three months ago. Today’s meeting was also aimed at identifying new challenges and charting a way forward. In addition, the meeting afforded the CAS and the Branch Chiefs at NAF Headquarters the opportunity to intimate field commanders with the current policy directions in respective fields.

In his opening remarks at the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that so much had happened in the NAF in the preceding 3 months. He stated that reports from units indicated that the NAF was making substantial progress in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities. “Since the last meeting, we have flown over 1,077 hours in Operation LAFIYA DOLE, consuming about 1,032,000 litres of aviation fuel in the process”, the CAS said. Air Marshal Abubakar also disclosed that the NAF had made significant progress in the training of pilots in the last 3 months. For instance, the NAF graduated 16 student pilots at 401 Flying Training School (FTS) Kaduna, adding that it was the first time in 32 years that the NAF would graduate cadets from 401 FTS. He said he looked forward to the day that cadets would qualify as Instructor Pilots, noting that it had happened before and would happen again. The CAS expressed gladness that aircraft availability in 401 FTS Kaduna had increased by about 300 per cent from the three trainer aircraft in 2015. On recruitment, he stated that the NAF had recruited over 4,900 persons out of which 1,900 had completed training as airmen/airwomen and deployed to various units while another 1,500 are undergoing training, with another 1,500 scheduled to commence training afterwards. In addition, 406 have been enlisted into the Service out of which 206 have been commissioned as Direct Short Service officers while 200 would commence cadet training on 16 September 2017.

On humanitarian intervention schemes, the CAS said that, during its medical outreach programmes, the NAF provided free surgical interventions to about 133 Internally Displaced Persons out of 201 that were treated. In the same vein, the NAF was already intervening to provide succour to victims of the recent Makurdi Flood. Similarly, the NAF projected airpower beyond Nigeria’s territory within the same period, through its C-130H aircraft that was used to deliver relief materials to victims of the mudslide in Sierra Leone. Air Marshal Abubakar attributed the successes recorded to the collective contributions of all the principal staff officers and field commanders. He therefore commended them while asking that they redouble their efforts towards making further progress. He seized the opportunity to announce that a special operation code named “Op RUWAN WUTA”, had commenced in the North East. The operation is aimed at further degrading the capability of remnants of Boko Haram Terrorists and routing out criminal elements in the North East from their hideouts. Before the commencement of the meeting, a minute’s silence was observed in honour of the late Instructor Pilot, Group Captain Adanu Gabriel Ochai, who died on 24 August 2017 in Kaduna while on an official mission.

BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS SYMPATHIZERS PLEASE SPARE US FROM YOUR CAMPAIGNS OF CALUMNY

The Nigerian Army wishes to note with great concern the recent spate of negative, unguarded comments and derogative publications both on mainstream and on online media, denigrating the Armed Forces of Nigeria particularly, the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force by some unidentified, unscrupulous and unpatriotic individuals and groups.

This worrisome trend is observed mostly whenever we record successes in our military operations against Boko Haram terrorists and other laudable military endeavours such as when the United States Government decided to sell Tucano aircrafts to Nigeria. It is really surprising that these agents of destruction are not happy with the welcomed development of the sale of weapons and our collective success.

The list of their systematic, unrelenting and futile attempts to rubbish either the leadership or ridicule the Services through baseless allegations is quite lengthy. First there was a letter written by some self-appointed leaders of Islamic Movement of Nigeria on 17th August 2017 to United States of American government exhorting it to rescind its decision to sell Tucano aircraft, weapons and military hardware to Nigeria citing baseless reasons. This was followed by another round of cacophony of lies and unfounded allegations through media interviews by some individuals and bloggers and on Facebook and other Social media platforms and followed by concorted statistics by a well-known Non-Governmental Organization alleging that there was resurgence of Boko Haram terrorists activities even when the facts on the ground speaks otherwise. This dovetailed into a syndicated and paid article titled “As EFCC confesses the sad truth” published by Daily Trust and Punch newspapers on 3rd September 2017 written by Canada based writer, Sonala Olumhense calling for the resignation of the Chief of Army Staff over the 40-day deadline given to the Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE. This is in addition to other writings by hosts of self-acclaimed champions of the masses that go by various appellations on the Social Media making spurious and unfounded allegations against the military. The most unfortunate of these campaigns of calumny was a recent publication titled “Nigerians blame the NAF for failures in war against insurgents" by one Isaac Dachen on some online publication news outlets notably The Pulse. It is important to state that these vituperatives are ill-conceived and destructive posturings against the successes achieved in counter terrorism and counter insurgency operations in Nigeria and must stop.

This is because it is very clear that the aim of these people is to denigrate the leadership of the military, demoralize our troops and create doubts among the public on our ability and capability to deal decisively with security issues and assigned tasks in the name of advocacy and criticisms.

Unfortunately for them the Nigerian military is one of the best and most cohesive in the world. We have been discharging our duties diligently which brought about the desired successes achieved so far. The Services in conjunction with other security agencies have been doing the nation proud, sometimes at the expense of our dear lives. We will remain focused and resolute in serving our country.

It is imperative to note that the Nigerian Air Force is the backbone of the fight against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria. It has been identifying and neutralizing Boko Haram terrorists camps, some of its leadership, logistics and armoured fighting vehicles through its air interdictions.

The Nigerian Air Force has also been lifting logistics for the Nigerian Army and also supported in casualty evacuation and guiding troops during operations in addition to the provision of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and humanitarian activities, amongst others.

There is no doubt that it is the coordinated efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other Security Agencies that has led to our victory over the Boko Haram terrorists, a feat that is not only unprecedented, but acknowledged the world over. It is therefore most unkind and uncharitable for anybody to accuse any Service of any perceived or imagined lapses and attributing same to causing failure in the war against terrorists.

Such unguarded utterances and malicious allegations by individuals and reports by Non-Governmental Organizations are false, ill-timed and deplorable. Troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces should rather be commended for their selfless service which includes paying the supreme price.

The Nigerian Army fully appreciates the significant roles of the Nigerian Air Force in the North East and elsewhere across our country. We are partners in progress and the Nigerian Air Force is a key factor in our successes and we will continue to enjoy the supportive role as well specific Nigerian Air Force operations to finally clear the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hiding.
