[b]Wayne Rooney believes Manchester City lost their derby game against Manchester United because the midfielders of Manchester City were unwilling to track back and defend.

Manchester United were comfortable winners as they won their first derby game against Manchester City since 2012.

Manchester City midfielders could not deal with the possessive play of the improved Manchester United midfielders.

Wayne Rooney pointed out that Louis Van Gaal identified this weakness in Manchester City and they capitalised on it.

"We know some City players are not the best at tracking back and defending and tracking runners and we felt we could make them pay for that and we did," Rooney said.

"We have got players who can score goals from midfield and, to be honest, we felt that was going to win us the game and it was proved to be."

Manchester United's win move them four points clear of the English Premier League champions with six games to go.

However, Rooney pointed out that Manchester United is still a 'work in progress'.

"It is great how things are going and the performances we are putting in, but it has to continue," the striker said.

"We said earlier in the season that we were working on things and it was going to take time. It is starting to show now with the training we have been putting in. We have been working really hard.

"Each game is different and we have been training for each game in a different way, depending on how the opposition plays. There is no detail left unturned and we have been prepared really well.

"Last season was a tough one for us and we had to overcome that and there was also new players coming in, so we knew it would take time. It is starting to pay off now because we are starting to show what we can do, but we have to continue that to the end of the season and finish as high up as we can and take that into next year."

There is a lot of news going on about how Manchester City crumbled in a short time. After the departure of Roberto Mancini, all seemed well after Manuel Pellegrini led them to an English double last season with the Capital One League Cup and The English Premier League successes.

Many expected Manchester City to dominate this season but they crashed out of the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup and lie Fourth on the English Premier League table.

Some fans feel it is time for Manuel Pellegrini to go because of his reliance on a two-man midfield and his side gets dominated by any decent opposition.

Last season, Manchester City blew away teams with this formation. However, the players can not cope this season playing the same way.

The formation is not the problem. The game against Manchester United showed this. Pellegrini reverted to a 4-5-1 formation with Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and Silva in the central part of the midfield formation. Yet, Fellaini and co. had no problem dismantling Manchester City's midfield.

The midfielders do not work hard enough for the team. They regularly fail to track back to assist the team. This is why Louis Van Gaal found these faults when he went through the tapes of Manchester City.

Pellegrini should play Fernando more often and make him sit back and shield the defence. This will reduce the errors in the defence and reduce the goals the defence leaks due to overlapping players. Fernando's presence will reduce the reliance on tracking back midfielders.

The Barcelona matches in the Champions League showed this. In the first leg with Fernando in midfield, Barcelona did not have the kind of Freedom they had in the second leg. In the second leg, the Barcelona forwards had a field day walking into Manchester City's defence, Joe Hart's heroics saved Manchester City from an embarrassing scoreline.
