United States' standing as Women's Soccer's Preeminent Power is Shaky.
Millions of Americans will tune into the Women's World Cup this month expecting the United States to dominate in the way it always has.
Or at least in the way they think it always has.
Yes, the United States has won a whopping 271 of the 351 games it has played since that legendary afternoon at the Rose Bowl in 1999. There have been four championships in CONCACAF tournaments against regional opponents, 10 titles in the prestigious annual Algarve Cup, and - most important - gold medals at the last three Olympics.
But the World Cup, the biggest prize in women's soccer, has eluded the United States for 16 years. As this year's tournament approaches, it's clearer than ever that the rest of the world has caught up to the American dynasty.

U.S. Women's National Team Players Remember Where They Were During The '99 World Cup.
Back in 1999, the last time the U.S. won the World Cup, forward Sydney Leroux was nine years old, living in Vancouver. As she watched Brandi Chastain rip off her shirt after clinching victory with that final penalty shot, she knew she had to make a change in her life.
“That is why I’m here, it’s why I’m in the U.S. and playing for the U.S.,” Leroux told USA TODAY Sports’ Martin Rogers. “After seeing that as a 9-year-old I knew what I wanted to do and who I wanted to play for, and eventually it happened.”
Abby Wambach was in college at Florida. She recalls the impact that win had on the country and young women and girls everywhere.
“I can still picture them with their gold medals and seeing the pride and the sense of fulfillment,” Wambach said. “I have won Olympic gold medals and I cherish them, and now I want to win a World Cup more than anything. It is time for the U.S. to win it again.”
Much of the current squad was very young in ’99 — defender Julie Johnston was 7, midfielder Morgan Brian was 6 — but they carry the history with them as they prepare for this summer’s World Cup in Canada.

Meet Team USA: Up Close With The Hottest Stars in Soccer.
Hope Solo (l. to r.), Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach are among the veteran American players looking to win a first Women's World Cup when the tournament kicks off in Canada.
Meet the members of the U.S. national soccer team that will be chasing a third Women's World Cup title in Canada over the next month.
SHANNON BOXX - MIDFIELDER (No. 7)
Hometown:Redondo Beach, Calif.
Experience:Since being named to the U.S. women’s national team senior-level squad in 2003, she has developed into one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. This year marks the fourth time Boxx has been named to a U.S. FIFA Women’s World Cup roster. She started 14 out of 16 matches in the last three Women’s World Cups, scoring three goals. Boxx played every minute of all six U.S. matches in the 2008 Olympics and assisted on the game-winning goal in the quarterfinal against Canada. She started all six U.S. games in the 2004 Olympics, scoring the opening goal of the tournament and delivering the game-winning assist against Japan in the quarterfinal. In the 2012 Olympics, Boxx went down with an injury in the opening match and didn’t return until the championship game, in which she helped the WNT capture its third straight Olympic gold medal.
Did you know? She is the only player in USWNT history to be named to the senior-level squad for a FIFA Women’s World Cup without ever previously earning a cap playing in an international match.
MORGAN BRIAN - MIDFIELDER (No. 14)
Hometown:St. Simons Island, Ga.
Experience:Before being named to her first World Cup with the WNT senior-level team this year, Brian played in a World Cup with both the U-17 and U-20 youth squads. She thrived with the youth programs as a very skilled and instinctive central midfielder who quickly became one of the most promising players in the WNT program. She started all six U.S. games in the 2012 U-20 World Cup, playing all but 18 minutes.
Did you know?Brian, who stands 5-foot-7, was one of the skinniest and smallest players among all her soccer peers when she was a kid. Her size led to her receiving the nickname “Plankton.” After spending a couple seasons playing up a few age groups in her hometown of St. Simons Island, Ga., she moved to club soccer. There, she failed to make the “A” team and she was discouraged to the point where she thought she wasn’t good enough to play soccer at any higher level. The next year, she tried out again and made the “A” team. Now, at 22, she is the youngest member of the 2015 WNT World Cup roster.
LORI CHALUPNY - DEFENDER (No. 16)
Hometown:St. Louis.
Experience:This year’s World Cup selection is her second — her first was in 2007 — which makes her the second player in U.S. history to be named to two non-consecutive Women’s World Cup rosters (Brandi Chastain in 1991 and 1999). She started all six U.S. games at the 2007 Women’s World Cup, playing every minute of every match and scoring two goals. In the 2008 Olympics, she started and played every minute of the final four games of the tournament after leaving early in the first match with an injury and missing the second match; she tallied one goal.
Did you know?Chalupny was an extremely shy kid and player growing up and when she was in college and in youth programs with the WNT. She has said that her shyness was a major problem for her until she became more engrossed with the WNT and found her voice and leadership ability. She’s now an assistant coach for the women’s soccer team at Washington University in St. Louis, where she says she still has to get “pumped up to coach” and has shed her shyness to teach the game she knows so well.
WHITNEY ENGEN - DEFENDER (No. 6)
Hometown:Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
Experience:Engen is known for her commanding presence in the middle of the field and as a fine aerial threat for headers on set pieces. She will be an asset for the WNT in what will be her first World Cup at the senior level.
Did you know?Engen had a growth spurt early as a kid. She’s been quoted as saying that her first love was gymnastics but as a 5-foot-7 third grader, she was too big — she currently is 5-8. Despite her size, she said she struggled with soccer early on, even with a solid work ethic, and was always on the bench. She said it wasn’t until she switched teams — to one that her fellow WNT teammate Christen Press happened to play on — and started getting more playing time that something clicked, and her career took off.

ASHLYN HARRIS - GOALKEEPER (No. 18)
Hometown:Satellite Beach, Fla.
Experience:This will be the first World Cup at the senior level for Harris as she will be sitting behind Hope Solo. She’s logged a lot of minutes playing internationally for the WNT’s youth programs. She played every minute of all 12 matches for the U.S. during both the 2002 and 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cups. Harris was the youngest player on the 2002 U-19 World Cup squad.
Did you know? She won three national championships with the University of North Carolina Tar heels, playing alongside fellow WNT teammates Tobin Heath, Meghan Klingenberg and Whitney Engen, and was the first member of her family to graduate from college.

TOBIN HEATH - MIDFIELDER (No. 17)
Hometown:Basking Ridge, N.J.
Experience:Known for her dribbling ability and ball control, Heath is one of the most talented midfielders on the WNT roster. The 2015 World Cup will be her second with the WNT senior squad. She played in four matches of the 2011 Women’s World Cup, coming off the bench in each game. She played in all six U.S. games in the 2012 Olympics, starting in four and collecting three assists. She saw action off the bench in three games for the WNT in the 2008 Olympics.
Did you know? She’s an avid skateboarder who likes to drift from place to place and travel, staying with friends and family scattered throughout the U.S. She’s known for her free-spirited personality on and off the field. When she was playing soccer at the University of North Carolina, the team dorm was right next to the soccer field, so she and her teammates would always go out and play, disregarding the “closed” signs all over the gates.
LAUREN HOLIDAY - MIDFIELDER (No. 12)
Hometown:Indianapolis.
Experience:Holiday is a key player for the WNT’s offensive attack. She’s a strong, versatile player with tremendous field vision and instincts who has shown her ability to both pass and score. This year marks her second WNT World Cup selection, and she has represented the WNT in the last two Olympics, helping capture two gold medals; she started five of the six U.S. games in the 2012 Olympics. She started all six U.S. games in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, scoring two goals and leading the team with three assists after earning a starting spot just before the tournament. She played in the final three games of the 2008 Olympics after being named to the roster following an injury to Abby Wambach.
Did you know? She had open heart surgery when she was 3 years old and, her energetic personality as a kid worried doctors after the operation because everyone had trouble keeping her calm and keeping her heart rate down. Formerly Lauren Cheney, she is married to New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday, with whom she had an intense pickup game of basketball after their weekend wedding dress rehearsal.
JULIE JOHNSTON - DEFENDER (No. 19)
Hometown:Mesa, Ariz.
Experience:She is a talented defender who made a name for herself in the WNT’s youth programs. She captained the WNT’s U-20 squad to the 2012 U-20 Women’s World cup title. This is her first World Cup run with the senior-level squad.
Did you know? She is currently dating Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, who was an NFL rookie in 2013 — the same year Johnston got her first call-up to the WNT. The two met while in college — Johnston at Santa Clara and Ertz at Stanford. When Ertz signed with the Eagles, he got a custom pair of cleats for Johnston that he had colored in Santa Clara maroon and gold with his football number sewed on the tongue.
MEGHAN KLINGENBERG - DEFENDER (No. 22)
Hometown:Gibsonia, Pa.
Experience:This is her first World Cup selection. She was named an alternate on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. So far in 2015, she’s shown her ability as an attacking defender; she’s played in all 10 games, starting nine and netting one goal.
Did you know?Known as “Kling” by teammates and close family members and friends, she said her father signed her up for taekwondo when she was a kid to try to make her less shy, and now she is a third-degree black belt.

Okon may deploy a 3-5-2 formation ala Juve. Controlling the midfield will do the SF a lot of good. The Swedes and Americans and even the Aussies would have a hard time with a quintet of Nwabuoku, Ohadugha, Nkwocha, Okobi, and Nku.

Nkwocha wont start any match. Quote me anywhere. Nku will not start ahead of Ayinde also. The team is balanced on a 4-5-1. Midfield is key.

ALI KRIEGER - DEFENDER (No. 11)
Hometown:Dumfries, Va.
Experience:She is one of the best attacking defenders on the WNT and is a hard-nosed, aggressive player. This is her second World Cup selection. In her first World Cup in 2011, she started all six U.S. games and was one of four Americans to play every minute of the tournament —she netted the fifth and final penalty kick in the shootout win over Brazil in the quarterfinals. She tore her ACL in 2012 and missed the Olympics.
Did you know?In her senior year playing soccer at Penn State, she broke her leg but continued to travel with the team on flights during the College Cup. But the flights led to blood clots in her leg, which led to a pulmonary embolism and a series of mini-heart attacks that she has said made her fear for her life. Doctors monitored her recovery for six months, and she had to give herself shots every day until the blood clots went away. She eventually recovered and worked her way back into soccer form. She said because of her style of play, what she went through in college and because of her non-stop use of mascara, teammates call her “The Warrior Princess.” She refers to her makeup as “war paint.”
SYDNEY LEROUX - FORWARD (No. 2)
Hometown:Scottsdale, Ariz.
Experience:Leroux is a powerful, aggressive forward who relentlessly attacks and challenges the ball. Her aggressiveness and fearlessness on the pitch have turned her into a valuable asset off the bench. She was named to her first World Cup roster this year after being a huge offensive presence for the WNT’s youth programs, pounding in 10 goals in 12 World Cup matches with the WNT’s U-20 squad. In 2012, she set a WNT record for the most goals as a substitute (14) — the first 14 goals of her career with the senior-level team — and she appeared in four games in the 2012 Olympics, scoring one goal.
Did you know?Leroux was a bit of a troublemaker as a kid. She said she would put whiteout over her bad grades on her report cards and write in her own grades, hoping to fool her mother. Leroux also said school officials would call and leave messages about her getting into trouble; she said she would beat her mom home and delete the messages before she could hear them.
CARLI LLOYD - MIDFIELDER (No. 10)
Hometown:Delran, N.J.
Experience:Lloyd’s unbelievable work ethic and drive on and off the field as well as her clutch play has turned her into one of the most important players on the WNT roster. This year marks her third World Cup selection. She played all but 16 minutes in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, tallying one goal and one assist. She was the hero for the WNT in the 2012 Olympic gold medal game against Japan, scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory. In the 2008 Olympics, she scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime to propel the WNT to a 1-0 win over Brazil.
Did you know? She has an intense commitment to fitness and conditioning. She is motivated by the fitness commitments made by athletes such as Mohammad Ali and Bruce Lee-Ali, who would train on Christmas morning because no one else was training, and Lee, who Lloyd has said was known to do 10,000 sit ups a day.
ALEX MORGAN - FORWARD (No. 13)
Hometown:Diamond Bar, Calif.
Experience:Morgan’s clutch play and amazing attacking ability make her one of the most dangerous offensive players on the WNT roster. The 2015 Women’s World Cup marks Morgan’s second World Cup selection. In the 2011 World Cup, Morgan came off the bench for five of the six games and, along with prolific U.S. goal-scorer Abby Wambach, the only U.S. player to score in the semifinal and the championship game; she tallied three total goals in the tournament. She is the first U.S. player to collect both a goal and an assist in a Women’s World cup final.
Did you know?Morgan has been limited in practice and hasn’t played in last three matches as a precaution because of a bone bruise in her left knee. Aside from playing a significant role with the WNT, Morgan is also a best-selling author. In 2013, she published the first book of series called “The Kicks.” The first book is titled “Saving the Team,” and it debuted at number seven on The New York Times Best-Seller list.

Nigerian expats and soccer fans welcome Nigerian women's soccer team at Winnipeg airport

More than 50 enthusiastic Nigerian expats and soccer players waited for the Nigerian women’s soccer team at Winnipeg’s airport this morning.

Passengers aboard a flight from Toronto got a warm and boisterous welcome. The welcome party sang, danced and played musical instruments to welcome the Nigerian women’s soccer team to Winnipeg at the airport.

"I wasn't expecting this," said defender Osinachi Ohale.

"This is what it's going to be like at the stadium," predicted Winnipeg's Chipalo Simunyola, part of the welcoming committee. He and many other Nigerian expats have purchased tickets to see the Nigerian women's matches next week.

Dozens of youth soccer teams went to the airport in their uniforms to greet the women’s soccer powerhouse from Africa.

Nigeria has dominated women's football in Africa, winning nine African Women's Championship titles since the biennial began in 1991.

In October, the Nigerian women’s team won its ninth championship in Africa and secured its place at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

On Monday, Nigeria plays its first game against Sweden at 3 p.m. at the Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

ALYSSA NAEHER - GOALKEEPER (No. 21)
Hometown:Bridgeport, Conn.
Experience:This year’s World cup will be her first with the WNT senior-level squad. She is a veteran of the WNT youth-level programs, where she started in goal for the 2008 U.S. U-20 Women’s World Cup championship team.
Did you know? She has a twin sister named Amanda, who was a forward in soccer. Alyssa has said that she and her sister used to stay outside for hours and Amanda would take shots at her, trying to score in whatever makeshift goal the two could put together. Alyssa also said that one of the main reasons she wanted to be a goalkeeper as a kid was because of the cool gear she got to wear.
KELLEY O'HARA - DEFENDER (No. 5)
Hometown:Fayetteville, Ga.
Experience:This year’s World Cup will be her second with the WNT. She had an extremely successful collegiate soccer career as a forward but carried her tremendous attacking ability to the WNT defensive backfield prior to the 2012 Olympics, where she shined and played a critical role for the WNT in the 2012 Olympics gold medal run. She was one of three players to play every minute of all six matches in the 2012 Olympics.
Did you know?O’Hara and fellow WNT teammate Christen Press played together at Stanford University. O’Hara won the Hermann Trophy in 2009 as the best female collegiate soccer player in the U.S.-Press won it the following year.
Heather O'Reilly and the U.S. women's national team start chasing World Cup glory on Monday.
HEATHER O'REILLY - MIDFIELDER (No. 9)
Hometown:East Brunswick, N.J.
Experience:This year’s World Cup marks her third selection to the WNT World Cup roster. She’s competed in the last three Olympics for the WNT, helping the team to three straight gold medals. She’s compiled five goals in her three World Cups and three goals in her three Olympics with the WNT.
Did you know?Known as “HAO” by her teammates and recognizable on the pitch by her vicious “game face” she’s always wearing, she received her first WNT senior level call-up while she was still in high school. She was the youngest player on the 2004 Olympic gold medal-winning team and was the second youngest player on the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad.
CHRISTEN PRESS - FORWARD (No. 23)
Hometown:Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
Experience:Press brings an invaluable versatility to the WNT in what will be her first Women’s World Cup in 2015. She has great instinct as a forward with her ability to rack up goals at an impressive rate-she has 20 goals in 45 caps with the WNT-and she is also very skilled as a midfielder. She helped the WNT gain its 2015 World Cup berth, playing in all five games at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship and collecting two goals and an assist. She was named an alternate on the 2012 Olympic team without ever previously earning a cap with the senior squad.
Did you know?Press is the all-time leading scorer for Stanford University (71 goals), and she received the Hermann Trophy in 2010 as the top female collegiate soccer player in the U.S.-former WNT member Mia Hamm won the award twice in college. Press is an avid writer and reader who has stacks of journals in her closet that she’s complied over the years.
CHRISTIE RAMPONE - DEFENDER (No. 3)
Hometown:Point Pleasant, N.J.
Experience:An unquestioned captain and veteran of the WNT, her ability, anchoring the defensive backfield, leadership and experience are critical for the senior squad. The 2015 Women’s World Cup marks her fifth selection to the WNT senior squad roster. She has the most caps on the WNT (306), is the most capped player in the world and is only the second player in world history to reach 300 caps ( Kristine Lilly is the other). Rampone (formerly Christie Pearce) is the only player left from the 1999 World Cup championship team. She also captained the WNT to its third straight gold medal in the 2012 Olympics-her fourth Olympics appearance, most of any U.S. player.
Did you know?Rampone was extremely shy as a kid and as a young adult in college and in the early stages of her career with the WNT. She has said she was scared to order pizza on the phone when she was a kid and that she used to go and hide on the team bus after games in high school and college to avoid talking to reporters. Now, she’s embraced the role as a team captain and has become an integral piece for the WNT-she was named captain of the WNT in 2008.

MEGAN RAPINOE - MIDFIELDER (No. 15)
Hometown:Redding, Calif.
Experience:Rapinoe, with her bleach-blonde hair, has become one of the most recognizable members of the WNT. She will be competing in her second Women’s World Cup for the WNT senior team in 2015 after playing in six matches in the 2011 World Cup where she recorded one goal and three assists-all of which came in the final three games of the tournament. She got her first taste of the Olympics with the WNT in 2012 where she started all six games and recorded three goals and four assists, one of which led to the game-winning goal from Carli Lloyd in the 2-1 gold medal game win over Japan.
Did you know?Rapinoe grew up in a rural area outside of Redding, California in a family with six kids and with a twin sister named Rachel.
AMY RODRIGUEZ - FORWARD (No. cool
Hometown: Lake Forest, Calif.
Experience:Rodriguez has acted as a tremendous offensive sparkplug off the bench for the WNT since she became a mainstay with the senior club in the 2008 Olympics where she started in five of six games and had one goal and two assists, including a pass to midfielder Carli Lloyd for the game-winning goal in the gold medal game against Brazil (1-0). She played in four matches in the 2012 Olympics, and she played in her first Women’s World Cup for the WNT senior team in 2011 where she started the first five matches of the tournament; she didn’t score a goal. In 2015, she’s played in nine games for the WNT, starting in three and collecting a goal and an assist.
Did you know?Rodriguez made her first appearance for the WNT senior club on March 11, 2005 against Finland as a high school senior. In 2012, she tied a U.S. WNT record with five goals in a single match-all in the second half-after she came in as a substitute in the first match of the year against the Dominican Republic in a CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying match in Vancouver, Canada.
BECKY SAUERBRUNN - DEFENDER (No. 22)
Hometown:St. Louis, Missouri
Experience:Sauerbrunn played in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, appearing in two matches, and in the 2012 Olympics, appearing in three matches, for the Women’s National team. She was called to play on the U.S. Women’s National Team’s senior squad for the first time in January 2008. She was sent back down after and didn’t get another call-up until 2010. Since then, she has developed into one of the most consistent players and defenders for the WNT senior squad. She has started in every game for the WNT in 2015.
Did you know?Sauerbrunn is known for her toughness as a defender on the pitch, and she has said it’s because of her two older brothers that she’s a “scrapper.” In her first cap and start for the Women’s National Team against Canada on Jan. 16, 2008, Sauerbrunn and an opposing player collided heads going for a ball in the air. She broke her nose as a result of the play but remained in the game with blood “gushing” from her nose and running down her face until one of her teammates basically commanded her to get off the field. The team trainer reset her nose and she returned to play in the very next match.
HOPE SOLO - GOALKEEPER (No. 1)
Hometown:Richland, Wash.
Experience:One of the most well-known members of the Women’s National Team, Solo has established herself as, arguably, the best female goalkeeper in the world. She will be competing in her third consecutive Women’s World Cup in 2015, and she has represented the U.S. in the last three Olympics, winning two gold medals. She also won the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Leading up to the World Cup, Solo has compiled 170 international appearances and 84 shutouts in her career with the Women’s National Team, both of which are tops for a goalkeeper in team history.
Did you know?Solo started out as a goal-scoring forward when she was a kid. She was moved to goalkeeper as a teenager because her team’s regular ‘keeper was injured, and she has said she used to hate the position. It wasn’t until her high school playing days when she was recruited by the University of Washington as a goalkeeper that she realized her potential in the net. She has gone on to start in net for every age group in the U.S. Women’s National Team program.
..to be continued later...

ABBY WAMBACH - FORWARD (No. 20)
Hometown:Rochester, N.Y.
Experience:Wambach has been an offensive staple on the U.S. Women’s National Team since she was named to her first World Cup squad in 2003 and then her first Olympic team in 2004. She captured the all-time international scoring record in 2013, and she was named to her fourth U.S. Women’s World Cup roster in 2015. In the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, she recorded four goals to reach 13 for her career in the tournament, which moved her past Michelle Akers and into first on the all-time list for U.S. goal scorers in the World Cup.
Did you know?Wambach’s four goals in the 2011 FIFA World Cup were scored in the final four matches of the tournament-all with her head. She is the first U.S. player to score a goal in each of the final four matches of the World Cup. Wambach also set an Olympic record in 2012 by scoring in the first five matches of the tournament. Through 2014, the U.S. squad is 112-2-8 all-time in games she has scored.

You're spot on there. What we have here in the US is "indirect corruption" or "high tech" corruption.
Do you also know that the US where the ones that helped in digging out thIS FIFA mess? Why? Because FIFA denied them the hosting rights and awarded it to the highest bidder Quatar whose weather is not too favourable to football matches when the World cup starts. That is what angered them the most.
That is why most of them where even threatening FIFA with bomb.

If it where a Nigerian or African thing or persons where involved mennnn man pikin for no hear word ooo. These people behave in such a way that you hadly believe they are corrupt. They are so technical about their corruption. God don catch them this time around. I go just de use this incident to de bash them on forums.
The Thing Is That View Only Show Their Corrupt Side When Their Is Something At Stake For Them To Gain. The Usa Started This Mess Because They Lost The World Cup Bid To Their Rival And Enemy Russia, While The British Press Are Interested Because They Too Lost Their Bid To Qatar, If Both Of Them Were Awarded D Tournaments They Wont Even Care wether Fifa Stole Or They Are Corrupt.

- Legendary striker Perpetua Nkwocha is the oldest Super Falcons player to feature at the Fifa World Cup at 35 and six months in Nigeria’s 1-0 defeat of Canada on July 5, 2011 at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, Dresden. She marked this feat by scoring the Falcons’ lone goal in the 84th minute.

- Patience Avre is the youngest Nigerian player to score at the Fifa Women's World Cup at the age of 18 years and 10 months. She achieved this feat in 1995 at the Olympia Stadion, Helsingborg where the Super Falcons held Canda to a 3-3 draw. Avre’s 60th minute strike was Nigeria’s second goal of the game.

- Faith Ikidi is the youngest player to have represented Nigeria at 15 years and seven months. She achieved this at USA 2003

- 65,080- This is the record number of spectators to watch a Falcons game in the World Cup. This was set on June 24, 1999 in Nigeria's 7-1 loss to USA in a group game at the Soldier Field, Chicago.

Ahead of their opening fixture against Sweden on Monday at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, Edwin Okon, has told News24 Nigeria that he hopes to start the competition on a winning note.

The Rivers Angels gaffer, who will also come up against Australia and the United States of America in group D of the competition, says seeing how tough their group is, it is imperative they start with a win against the Swedes.

“We have to start the competition on a winning note,” he told News24 Nigeria.

“In a competition of this magnitude and when you consider the group we are in, we may have no choice but to start by hitting the ground running.

“Sweden, Australia and the USA won’t be easy at all and I’m sure those countries also feel the same way about us, so every one of the teams will definitely be looking at starting with a win.”

The African champions have what is arguably the most fearsome strike-force heading into the competition, with veteran Perpetual Nkwocha, Desire Oparanozie, Ini-Abasi Umotong, Francisca Ordega and rave of the moment, Asisat Oshoala, but Okon has downplayed that and says it will be about the entire team and not just the attack.

“We have 23 players and all of them are expected to play a role at some point, so it’s not just about our strikers,” he said.

The face the Swedish ladies at 9pm Nigerian time on Monday.
