Canada 2015: Make History, NFF Charges Falcons.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has tasked Super Falcons to go all out to make history at this year’s edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This message was passed onto the girls by the leader of delegation to the tournament and NFF Executive Committee member, Chief (Mrs) Dilichukwu Onyedinma when she addressed the ladies on arrival at the team’s lodge in Winnipeg, Canada.
“I urge you to go all out and make history. We are all praying for you; Nigerians are praying for you and I know that you are praying for yourselves too. You must give a very good account of yourselves. You must not let yourselves and the country down because I know that God will do it for you; He is always behind you and He hears your prayers because of your commitment and behaviour.
“In Nigeria now, you are looked at as the best national team so I want you to keep it up and by God’s grace we are going to make history. I want you to up your game and forget about all past achievements because this is the big one and history beckons on all of you,” she concluded.

Women’s World Cup: Falcons ‘ll shock the world – Okon.
Hostilities continue today at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada but Nigeria will take on Sweden in their opening group game tomorrow. Both nations have met twice in this competition previously.
Their first meeting was in 2003, when Sweden beat Nigeria 3-0, while the second was at the 2007 World Cup and it ended in a 1-1 draw where Cynthia Uwuak scored for Nigeria.
Nigeria is arguably the best team in Africa, coming off its ninth African Championship and making all seven World Cups. The Super Falcons have had success playing an all-out attacking style and score a lot of goals. It’s a bleak outlook in Group D, but this team is confident and anything is possible if Nigeria can win one of its early games against Sweden or Australia.
In an interview after the groups were released, Okon said his team is strong and his players have experience that could allow Nigeria to “shock the world.”
The Super Falcons are ranked 33rd in the World and have been in the World Cup every time. The Nigerian Ladies have made it past the group stage only once, that being in 1999 when they lost in the quarterfinals. The positives for the Coach Edwin Okon tutored team are with the success of the U-20 team.
The Falcons are the type of team that if you look past them to the next game, they will punish you for that.

Fire Scare at Falcons World Cup Hotel.
There was mild drama at the camp of Nigeria’s Super Falcons around 9pm Friday night (3am Nigeria time) as fire broke out at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites, where the team are staying.
Although the cause of the fire was unknown, AfricanFootball.com gathered the fire was later put off by the fire service station.
The incident caused pandemonium as players and officials of the Super Falcons were forced to evacuate their hotel rooms with some of them not fully dressed.
Team striker Desire Oparanozie recalling the experience on her Instagram page said, “We all ran out of the hotel because of fire incident and d to the surprise of everyone, some ran out in pants and singlet.
"Thank God for the early intervention of the fire fighters. The evacuation was so damn funny but thank God we have put it behind us because our focus is on our first game against Sweden on Monday.”
The Super Falcons begin their World Cup campaign on Monday against Sweden in Winnipeg.
The kick-off is at 9pm Nigerian time, which is 3pm in Winnipeg.

Hamilton Warns Falcons: Don’t Underrate Your Opponents.
Ahead of the Super Falcons opening match against Sweden at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, former coach, Paul Hamilton urged the team not to underrate their opponents if they want to progress.
The coach Edwin Okon led side is in group D alongside former world Champions, United States of America, Sweden and Australia.
Hamilton who led the Nigerian women’s team to the 1991 inaugural FIFA World Cup in China, said the team are capable of springing surprises but need to be cautious at all times.
"The Super Falcons must not underrate any of their opponents from their group if they want to progress at the competition" he begins. "Though we look like the underdogs from the group with our opponents’ record, I am sure this team can spring up surprises."We need to tread cautiously if we are to come out from the group and move to the next round." he sums up.
The seven time African champions have qualified for the FIFA World Cup seven times, as their best position at the Mundial is the quarter final stage in China.

Canada defeats China PR in Women’s World Cup opener.
EDMONTON—John Henearly cried on the touchline when Ukrainian referee Kateryna Monzul awarded the Canadian women’s national team a penalty shot in the dying minutes of the Women’s World Cup kickoff game against China on Saturday evening.
“When the call came, I celebrated like we just scored because I knew only one woman was going to step up in the 90th minute and write the script, like she always does. And she did.”
Cometh the hour, cometh the woman. Who else but Canada’s captain Christine Sinclair could save her team from a disappointing nil-nil draw in the most dramatic of fashions?
Ever composed, the country’s all-time leading scorer stepped up to the spot in front of a record crowd at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton to slot home a textbook penalty shot.
The minute Monzul called a foul in the box against Zhao Rong for hitting substitute Adriana Leon in the face, it was Sinclair’s to take.
“The first thing that went through my head was, ‘I’m taking this.’ ”
She took a penalty against the Chinese the last time the two sides met, in January at the Four Nations Cup. But Saturday’s goal, which secured a much-needed three points after a substandard performance, was admittedly one of the biggest of her career.
The sigh of relief around the packed stadium was audible.
Nixing the early nerves they showed against England in Hamilton last week, Canada came out strong. They dominated the first 15 minutes of the match and had a couple of promising chances through Sinclair and centre-back Kadeisha Buchanan.
Social Media reaction to Canada's win
Midway through the first half, Josee Belanger, still playing at right-back as a fill-in for the injured Rhian Wilkinson and Marie-Eve Nault, had Canada’s most threatening chance when she rattled a long-range drive off the Chinese’s crossbar.
Despite the early pressure, eight-ranked Canada let the world’s No. 16 team back into the game as the half progressed. China wasted no time taking their chances.
The away team nearly capitalized on a mistake by central defender Lauren Sesselmann, who looked nervous and unfocused throughout the half, when her pass back to Erin McLeod from the top of the box fell short. And a free kick from Wang Lisi in the 22nd minute struck both posts before bouncing to safety.
Canada’s flat play against the compact defensive team forced Herdman to make some tactical substitutions early in the second half, replacing defending midfielder Desiree Scott with attack-minded Jessie Fleming and pulling off striker Jonelle Filigno for midfielder Kaylyn Kyle. That move changed the team’s formation from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2. Later, Kyle would drop back to defence with Buchanan and Sesselmann as Canada mounted a desperate 3-4-3 in the final 10 minutes.
The re-jigging didn’t look like enough to help Canada find a decisive goal until substitute Adriana Leon was brought down in the box by China’s Zhao in the second-to-last minute and the referee point to the penalty spot.
Kevin C. Cox / GETTY IMAGES
Christine Sinclair reacts after scoring on a penalty kick in the final minutes of Saturday's World Cup opener against China PR in Edmonton.
Sophie Schmidt, who was named player of the game and is the team’s second penalty taker behind Sinclair, watched her captain walk away from the ball following the call.
For a split second, she worried Sinclair wasn’t going to take the shot.
“But she’s our captain, we put our faith in her and there was no doubt in my mind that she was going to put it away. If not, we were there for the rebound.”
Like Herdman, goalkeeper Erin McLeod, who grew up just outside of Edmonton, knew her team would come out of the game with three points once the decision was made.
“When she pointed to the penalty spot I felt like I could breathe for the first time in the game.”
Still, the team, who plays their next game against New Zealand on Thursday in Edmonton, played nervous and let their emotions get to them, she said.
“I think we were lucky to come out with the win.”

Canadian Drama in Opening Game
It almost became a hugely disappointing opening gambit for Canada in the first game of the World Cup, with the hosts needing a 92nd-minute penalty to take the win against China.
The Asian team defended resolutely but finally fell in injury time, when Canada captain Christine Sinclair converted her spot-kick.
It was a disappointing day for the record attendance of more than 53,000, who were hoping their team would put on an impressive show. However, they failed to create many clear-cut opportunities.
China came close to taking the lead midway through the first half, when Wang Lisi rattled the crossbar with a free-kick.
Canada retained the lion's share of possession and territory, but Sophie Schmidt and Ashley Lawrence both failed to convert good opportunities.
With time running out, the referee awarded a controversial penalty to give the Olympic bronze medalists the chance to grab all three points, and Sinclair made sure of the result.
Joe Krishnan of the Independent called the action in the closing stages, and he described the penalty as "very dubious" at full-time:
Controversial penalty given to Canada in stoppage time! Leon appeared to be pushed but very soft
FT: Canada 1-0 China. Hosts had to be patient but were gifted very dubious penalty to win their first opening #FIFAWWCfor first time.
Canada must do better than this as the competition progresses, otherwise it will mean an early exit in the knockout rounds despite home advantage.
However, a win in the first game was vital—and they just about managed to do the job on Saturday.
Brilliant Martens Goal Enough for Dutch
The Netherlands were expected to beat New Zealand in their opening contest, and their winning goal, from 22-year-old Lieke Martens, was a true World Cup classic .
The young player fired a curling effort from outside the penalty area to secure the three points for her side, ensuring victory for her nation in its first game at a World Cup.
The moment was captured on social media, per FanSided:
The goal came midway through the first half and allowed the Dutch to play a possession game to stifle the Ferns, who couldn't find a way back into the match.
Netherlands head coach Roger Reijners was delighted with his side's efforts and highlighted his team had the best attacking chances of the contest, per FIFA.com:
I’m very happy that we won the first match and started this way. The first half was pleasing and we had more chances than our opponents. In the second half we were pulled back by New Zealand and we had some difficulty. Everyone was excited and primed for the match.
Group A is a two-horse race for top spot, and the Canadians should fear the Netherlands at this juncture.
The Dutch keep the ball incredibly well—as is their philosophy of the game—and Canada do not look like the same team that played so well at the London 2012 Olympics.
But there is an appetite from the public to see their team prevail, as the record crowd on Saturday proved, and the fans will give their backing to the hosts until Canada can progress no further.

As poor as CIV is, Germany is showing some obvious weaknesses. I am also very happy that the referee for tomorrow is from Korea. Those Asians allow heavy challenges and are not afraid of making the right calls.
I am super excited that the match has come!

On the yellow cards, most were undeserved. Germans were diving shamelessly to garner refs sympathy. You can watch a rematch of our WWC opener in Frankfurt 2011, and see how much the germans were up to.
