Chairperson, the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has reiterated her call for urgent actions to stop attacks on foreigners in South Africa.

She took her cause to Twitter on Sunday, saying urgent actions must be taken by Nigerian as well as South African governments to halt the killing of foreigners in the former apartheid country.

The lawmaker also made case for Nigerians who lost their lives and property in the attacks, saying they must be adequately compensated by the South African government.

The country has come under intense pressure in the past few days to halt the killing of innocent people and find a lasting solution to the inhuman act.

The recent attacks, according to reports, have led to the death of 10 Nigerians and several other nationals of African origin.

Dabiri-Erewa had, on Friday, moved a motion demanding a swift action from the Federal Government to ensure the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.

In a series of tweets, she insisted the country’s ambassador to South Africa must be recalled as part of the process of seeking a lasting solution to the injustice suffered by Nigerians who live and work there.

She also called for an immediate intervention of the African Union and President Jocobs Zuma to end the violence.

“To a large extent, Nigerians do their businesses lawfully in South Africa. They should be compensated for damages caused by the attacks,” she tweeted.

The legislator, who represents the Ikorodu Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, regretted that the Federal Government had yet to take any decisive action to assure the affected Nigerians of their safety.

She said, “The government needs to be more decisive and proactive in the interest of the welfare of Nigerians abroad. Immediate actions should be taken. We cannot afford to be complacent in this matter, If need be, Nigerians in South Africa should be evacuated.”

Commending the composure of Nigerians, Dabiri-Erewa called on Nigerians in South Africa to be calm and obedient to the limited movement order while a lasting solution is being worked out.

She also called for the speedy trial of those arrested in connection with the attacks. Victims, she said, must get justice.

On different social media platforms, ordinary Nigerians are speaking out on what they think the country should do to reduce the exposure of its citizens to the rising hatred in different parts of the world.

One Tunde Joseph, who blogged on Sunday, urged the government to reshape its domestic policies to plug the hole in the social welfare. This, he said, would make the country attractive to individuals who would ordinarily have sought succour in other countries.

“Nigeria and its people should be the centre of our new policies. We must begin to think of how to make Nigeria a comfortable place for all citizens. We must stop pursuing policies that do not add real value to the lives of Nigerians,” said the blogger.

As horrible photographs of attacks circulated on social media at the weekend, Africa and, indeed, the world raised their voices against the violent killings, describing them as inhuman and barbaric. Social media activists have called on governments of affected countries and the international community to rise in defence of targeted individuals.

A tweeter, Baba Oliver, urged affected countries to weigh a reprisal as a possible option to compel the South African government to take a sincere action. He suggested the repatriation of South Africans living in Nigeria and other African countries, saying the option would force Zuma to call the attackers to order.

While Zuma has publicly expressed his sympathy to those affected, some online reports said he failed to act when it was most necessary. Some reports suggest the President has encouraged the growing xenophobic attitude of his people.

On Facebook, one Gabriel Emameh said the attackers and those who, by their inaction, had encouraged them should be prosecuted at th
