Do you know the meaning of xenophobia? Xenophobia is the unreasonable fear of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange. Immediately after the end of the Nigeria civil war, illegal aliens from some West African countries came into Nigeria to do odds jobs and others too demeaning for Nigerians. They were called illegal aliens because they had no residence permit and constituted nuisances in the country. Majority though, were from Ghana. The Government later moved for their expulsion from Nigeria but not before adequate care to deport them to their various countries was effectively carried out. Nigeria did what it had to do as to improve economic opportunities for Nigerians since those illegal aliens blocked economic opportunities for our citizens. It was on record that only those without legal permit to reside in the country was deported. Yes, they did go back to their countries in the popular Ghana-must-go bags. This, with all due respect, was not xenophobic. Governments all over the world deport illegal aliens from their countries. U.S.A. and Britain does it all the time. So trying to compare a government noble attempt to reduce the numbers of illegal aliens in the country and to increase economic opportunities for its citizens with what is happening in South-Africa is completely off the mark. The two incidents are not analogous.
