Just as the emergence of an opposition party, for the first time in
Nigeria’s political history would soon reorder the entire political
equation in the nation’s political space, the South East geopolitical
zone would also experience “emergence of new kids on the block.”
There could also be the emergence of new political capitals.
For the Igboland, the over half a century political hegemony
enjoyed by Enugu city, beginning with the Eastern Regional
Government, as its headquarters, along with its adjoining towns of
Nsukka, Onitsha, Awka and perhaps Nnewi, would give way to
Owerri, the quiet capital city of Imo State, but with eminently
educated and informed citizenry.
Owerri, a hospitality town, is an educational hub. It is now
arguably emerging as the political capital of Ndigbo. The reasons,
of course, are not far-fetched – it (Owerri) is till date, the only
APC state in all of the South East. Its
Governor, Rochas Okorocha, is the chairman of the Progressive
Governors’ Forum (PGF) in the federation. Owerri (Imo) gave the
APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari (and now
President-elect) his highest votes of 133,253 in the entire
Igboland. Also, Buhari visited Owerri many times over than any
other town in the South East – perhaps it was one of his most-
visited in the country during his electioneering campaigns.
New political leaders
In the new South East political equation, Okorocha would become
the rallying point (that is, if he wins his gubernatorial re-election
bid). Ogbonnaya Onu, former APC national chairman and former
Abia State governor would become the South East APC leader.
Others are Chris Ngige (though he would be serving out his
senatorial seat, having lost his re-election bid); Emma Enukwu,
national vice chairman of APC (South East); Osita Izunaso,
national organising secretary. It was spoken at the high level, in
one of Buhari’s trips to Owerri that he favoured Imo State to
produce the next Senate President. And if all plans went well,
Izunaso would have emerged as the new Senate President if he
had won his Orlu Senatorial zone seat. Other new leaders are
George Muoghalu, national auditor and Tina Adike, deputy national
women leader. These would be determining the appointment of
South East persons at the national level.
Political heavyweights like Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the PDP Board
of Trustees member would be dethroned. Others are Peter Obi (ex-
Anambra governor); Theodore Orji (Abia outgoing governor,
though will be at the Senate); Martin Elechi (Ebonyi outgoing
governor); Sullivan Chime (Enugu outgoing governor) and Willie
Obiano (APGA Anambra governor).

Dont say he wont be the president of Nigeria because nobody is God, why am against him most times is that he talks too much and take himself too serious, he can be president of Nigeria but he should stop causing division in Igboland because Zik, Okpara, Ibiam, Mbakwe and Ekwueme that were more political advance than him didn't insult or caused disunity and division among Ndigbo for a day.

Rochas can go on and i wish him the best but he should stop thinking that by dividing Igbos he will rule Nigeria, we wont condone that

Re: Owerri As An Emerging Political Capital Of Igboland by millionaireman: 12:36am On May 07, 2015
Owerri is supposed to have since emerged the biggest city and new political capital of Igbo land, given that 39 years since Imo state was created, nearly all Imo state could afford is sited in Owerri, nearly all of the state's capital budgets were spent on Owerri, nearly every income that flows into Imo state gets spent in Owerri; while the rest of the state remain glorified villages with no noticeable growth in wealth and urban development.

The present Imo state government amplified the phenomenon of Imo state must have Owerri as the only modern city.

Udenwa government remains the only that extended a few economic survival and modern development projects to other areas of Imo state outside the state capital.

Take a look at say, nearby Delta or Anambra state, see the gains from states creation, see that states were not created to have only the state capital to be the only place to have modernity in one state, as it is in Imo state.
Any major government development infrastructure in Asaba is nearly duplicated in Warri. In Anambra, it is near uniformity in government provision of development infrastructure to the three zones of the state.

As Owerri blooms and becomes the new political capital and modern city in Igboland, perhaps because of the added factor that gov Okorocha is in the rulling party - from author's mindset - what happened to growth in Orlu and Okigwe, two towns that had near equal level of urban development with Owerri when Imo state was created? Don't people in Orlu and Okigwe pay taxes? Are they not co-owners of the monthly allocations from the federal government?

Four urban roads in Orlu totalling about 3km and similar in Okigwe were started by Okorocha government, it then went boasting that it has transformed both into cities. Okorocha even damaged some infrastructures he met in Orlu and then retired to lavishing the state's money on modern infrastructure in the state capital; at times pushing down existing infrastructure in the state capita, like the state library, to build new ones; at times duplicating or even triplicating existing infrastructure in the state capital - with nothing done to extend these infrastructure to areas outside the state capital.

Even much of the double lane roads started in Okigwe and Orlu are left unfinished, some roads are for years left scrapped, access to many internal roads blocked in the last three years. In Orlu and Okigwe, the half hazard and long standing form of the unfinished road works make them look like during the military era where government could do wrong but nobody to question that.

Increasingly, since he joined the APC, governor Okorocha does not have much attachment to any other place in the state outside Owerri any more; that is why he cannot take into cognizance the sufferings of inhabitants in the areas where his govt left roads scrapped in the last three years.

When Owerri gets overpopulated before long, the state government may need to start to borrow to expand infrastructure and clean-up in the city, it then becomes official that Imo state government cannot provide modern development infrastructure in any other place in Imo state outside the state capital.
Another alternative for governor Okorocha is to start a Third Owerri Capital Territory.

Okorocha is just a puppet being used in their hands. How many vote did he gather in their primaries?? In Igbo land he has no followership and his party he is a just like an errand boy. Its a shame. Nobody will listen to that overbloated f.ool. It's funny when they call him an Igbo leader. He is just a noise maker and he is just relevant because he is still a governor, nothing more. Soon as he leaves office he will be placed exactly where Ngige was kept.

I only comment on silly threads to correct certain impressions.

Owerri is a beautiful city with a reasonable number of educated elites but it can not, I repeat, can not be a political hub to Ndigbo.

Rochas is the too desperate and immature to be a political figurehead in igboland even if APC rules for 100yrsundecided

First of all I am not the source of the write up as it was just a political calculation by Thisday. However it is quite obvious from events unfolding. The signs have always been there and that was what got the old folks jittery to start on time to tell lies against Okorocha and attack him. The truth is that he is very popular among the masses but an enemy of the old order elite because his emergence killed their influence.

On the floor of the House today, Hon. Yakubu Dogara was
nominated for the position of Speaker by Hon. Abdulmumini
Jubril from Kano while the nomination was seconded by Hon.
Chike Okafor from Imo state,
all members of the APC.

While nominating Dogara, Abdulmimini had urged him to
accept the nomination regardless of possible personal
consequences, a veiled reference to the fact that his decision to
contest for the position was against his party’s wish.
On the other hand, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila was nominated by
Hon. Mohammed Abdul Sani from Bauchi and his nomination
seconded by another APC honourable member from Edo state.

Ekweremadu, Okorocha In Secret
Meeting In Owerri Over Senate
President’s Seat

If information reaching 247ureports.com is anything to go
by, then the deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu may
be emerging as the next senate president of the nation’s upper
chamber. Senator Ekweremadu was seen yesterday driving
into the Imo State government house with his convoy after
attending a memorial service of Hon. Chidi Nworgu’s father in
Nkwerre on Sunday.

He was said to have engaged in a 90-minute meeting with Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on
the need for the senate president to be zoned to the South East
Geo-Political Zone, who may have lost the opportunity to produce
the next Senate President of Nigeria for not returning any member
of the All Progressives Congress, APC to the senate.

It was learnt that the non-availability of any ranking APC Senator from the region to take the slot of Senate President might compel APC
to zone the slot to the North Central. But, according to
government house sources, Ekweremadu was said to have
impressed on Okorocha to use his position as the chairman of the
APC governor’s forum to attract the senate president’s seat to
South East region. He was said to have told Okorocha that
he would emerge the best choice given his rich background and
experience.

It was not clear if he had made his intention to
dump his party, PDP for APC, however, the source said his body
language showed that he was ready to leave PDP if the APC would
not abandon the Igbo. APC has so far won no fewer than 65
seats in the last NASS election pushing PDP with 44 Senators to
the second position in the upper legislative chambers.

www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/buhari-visits-owerri/
OWERRI—Barring unforeseen circumstances, President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) will visit Owerri today on a thank you tour.
A Government House statement, which brought this to light, was signed by Governor Rochas Okorocha’s media aide, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, and made available to media men in Owerri. “His Excellency, General Muhammadu Buhari, the President-elect on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, will be visiting the state to thank the people and government of the state for their unalloyed support that contributed greatly to his resounding victory at the polls on March 28, ” Onwuemeodo said. While noting that God used Okorocha to make the state and the South-East geo-political zone to be part of the success story of General Buhari’s victory, Onwuemeodo assured the people that they would be carried along in the unfolding dispensation. “In the new emerging order, everybody will be carried along and people will not be discriminated against on ground of their political leaning,” Onwuemeodo said.
