[EDUCATION]: FRESH CRISIS HITS UNIUYO, AS PHARMACY LOSES ACCREDITATION …AFFECTED STUDENTS PROTEST UNDERWAY As the University of Uyo prepares for its 21st and 22nd convocations, crisis looms in the institution as it loses accreditation of core courses. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a member of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) reveals that the accreditation team that visited the institution recently for accreditation of its programmes was disappointed at the state of infrastructures, equipment and technical capability of the university to sustain pharmacy and some Arts Courses, which informed total withdrawal of accreditation of some courses, including pharmacy. Continuing, our source maintained that the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Uyo lacks basic laboratory apparatuses, teaching equipment and technical manpower to continue to train pharmacists for our Health Care System. He further stressed that during the second but last Accreditation Team visit to the institution, the University only managed to secure interim accreditation for few courses. Reacting to the development, a Professor in the university who pleaded anonymity affirmed that the Institution has lost accreditation in core courses, blaming it on the inability of the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo to use available financial resources to provide adequate infrastructures, equipment and manpower for accreditation of courses in the University, challenging the Vice Chancellor to publish a comprehensive list of accredited courses and their status of accreditation for the information of the university community, students, parents and general public as the academic culture and tradition demand. Also speaking, a Principal Officer of the University (name withheld) said, the affected students are covertly planning a mass protest that may snowball into a major crisis as the fate of the affected students hang on the balance. Efforts to reach the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo for her comment was not successful as her phone was said to have been switched off. culled from www.academicmerit..com |
