PORT HARCOURT— Former Commander, Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, Chief Ateke Tom, has ruled out possible resumption of hostilities in the Niger Delta region because President Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential poll.

He also expressed confidence that things will be better in Rivers State when Mr Nyesom Wike assumes office as governor.

Ateke, yesterday in his hometown in Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, assured that the region will be peaceful. According to him, anyone who dares to threaten the peace in the region should be treated as a common criminal.

He said: “I heard some people saying that youths in the region might go back to the creeks soon. Well, I want to say that nobody will go back to the creeks because there is no reason for anybody to resume hostilities in the region. Anybody who makes any move to threaten the peace should be treated as a common criminal because there is no reason for that in the region again.”

Expressing the hope that General Muhammadu Buhari will provide purposeful leadership when sworn in as President of the country, Ateke advised him to give all Nigerians opportunity to contribute positively to his government.

He further advised Buhari against revoking the pipelines surveillance contracts awarded to youths in the region, stressing that the youths were better positioned to secure the pipelines from vandalisation.

“My advice is that Buhari should not cancel it. We are taking care of the pipelines and we are taking care of them very well. If he cancels the job, I don’t see who else can do it better. We are the owners of the area and are more familiar with the terrain. So, he should allow us continue to do the job for the country,” he added.

Well as long as the right things are done, no one actually loves violence or hostility except some few.

Ateke Tom has spoken.

Who knows militancy more than him?

All these nairaland violence callers should just shut up, cos the real militants aren't in for a show down.

How can they be when they have business to lose?

Remember that, just last week, the president of benin came to visit buhari, where he wished his country was a state in Nigeria. It won't cost him anything to seize Asari dokubo's university and properties in benin republic on the grounds of breeding militants, if buhari orders him to. Remember that this man's government arrested and locked up Asari dokubo for days before a sympathetic GEJ came to his rescue. The man might even be eyeing Asari's belongings sef. grin

Where is gwoza sef?

Now in niger delta- Asari dokubo

These are the real people who fought the war for the sake of their people and got fair Justice, not the greedy ones who want to seize the region and imprison their own people themselves

I have always stated this: the youths of Niger Delta can choose to work with Buhari to develop their Region OR pick up arms and convert their communities to a war zone. The choice is theirs to make.

And please ignore some hate mongering cowards who are here threatening fire and tomatoes. grin grin grin grin

Henry Okah had told us two years ago in response to the deafening noise coming out of the N Delta: "if Jonathan loses the election, not a single shot would be fired from the creeks".

Indeed he knows his people.

Ateke Tom should better warn his fellow Ijaw brother Asari Dokubo and tell him to keep quiet.

As for the pipleline contracts,it will definitely be cancelled. There are people who's job it is to protect the piplelines and not some ethnic militants.

Senibo Ateke Tom: No one has threatened violence against the government of Alhaji Buhari. We are calling for an end to institutionalised marginalisation by the Nigeria state. We are calling for our demand for the control of our Resources, a minimum of 50% derivation formular and political restructuring. In absence of that, we are demanding a referendum to determine whether or not our people wants to continue with this fraudulent arrangement called Nigeria or whether we want a new lease of life in a New Country -Lower Niger Republic. Our demands are legitimate and in line with international set principle. However, should government employ violence to silence us, we won't fold arms to be killed just like that(we hope it doesn't come to this).

“My advice is that Buhari should not cancel it. We are taking care of the pipelines and we are taking care of them very well. If he cancels the job, I don’t see who else can do it better. We are the owners of the area and are more familiar with the terrain. So, he should allow us continue to do the job for the country,”

I understand that you have made so much fortune from the pipeline security but be assured that a 50% derivation or a fully independent LNR will see you not only benefit but you and other Niger Deltans will not be at the mercies of Nigeria State. It is left for you to decide whether to support the legitimate call for emancipation or to remain where you are while we push for our cause.

I wish you well

God Bless Lower Niger People

Ateke is employing wisdom here.

As per the contract, it should be cancelled.

What President Buhari needs to do is to meet these guys and other representatives from SS, explain to them how the government intends to embark on projects that benefit majority of the people in that area (especially the crude oil host communities) rather than the few militants.

If after that they still choose to go the militancy way, then so be it. Whatever comes out of it is their problem.
