OSUN STATE IS SICK
There is a popular maxim that says “a hungry man is an angry and an angry man is a mad man”. When you are not healthy, it means you are sick. No two borderline! It is either you are well or unwell. A senior civil servant in the Obokun Local Government Area of Osun state who attempted to end his life by drinking a large quantity of insecticide speaks volume. He was said to have done it because of his inability to feed his family due to the failure of the state government to pay salaries. That was on yesterday’s punch…..a hungry man becomes angry….and later becomes mad…..no better explanation.
Osun state is no doubt a civil servant state and it therefore means that when the civil servant sneezes the whole state catches cold. The cash flow chain is from the Government – workers – ordinary citizen. The fact that Osun state is in a state of comatose is indubitable. The fact that civil servants in the state are owned 6-7months salary and still counting is irrefutable. The fact that Mr Ojo Owolabi was rushed to the hospital yesterday because he couldn’t put food on the table after being owned months of salary by the state government is visible to the blind on Punch Newspaper.
Everyone is now a fasting machine. It is done not as an act of service nor a religion necessity. Even when you fast…there is a need to break…where is the food? Weddings are postponed till further notice (menopause is telling!). Relationships are broken because of communication gap, where is the money to buy the recharge card (thank God for CALL ME SMS)? Couples who are due to prepare for another baby after a child spacing of 3years couldn’t engage in the matrimonial exercise because of the present realities. The informed ones knew there is a relationship between maternal nutrition and the future health status of the child. Education standard has fallen with no resuscitation near in sight. Students can’t pay their school fee. Some freshers had to defer their admission. Marketers are complaining, their goods are sold on credit with no money to stock. People are in darkness with no money to pay NEPA bill, we are now back to the 18th century where “fitila” was the golden trend. Cultism is now an act in our secondary schools. Pensioners are dying! Is retirement a sin? Is old age a disease?
With the present reality in Osun state, one would not but pray for a messiah like General Sanni Abacha to come to our rescue. Out of two evils, one is better. We need the necessary evil. Abacha was a ruthless dictator but we could still afford two square meal with the popular cheese (wara Abacha). Our mothers became a nutrition evangelist “soya bean is a good source of plant protein”. It is quite unfortunate that only the rich can afford a two square meal now…meat is a no go area. Palm oil is an expensive commodity. Ritualist dare not use palm oil as a sacrificial ingredient, if not the hungry civil servants would turn to ‘’gods”. We are back to the days of firewood. Parents who has inquisitive children can’t but say that they resulted into using firewood because kerosene contains a chemical called FAMINEcine which is injurious to the health. Others now remember cooking gas has an explosion tendency. Poverty is now an institution.
We are pleading with the state government to take care of our stomach infrastructure at this point in time. A hungry man cannot perform at its peak. We quite understand that the state government is doing everything possible to savage the situation, but it should be noted that ordinary citizen should not bear the brunt of government insensitivity and refusal to put a shock absorber in place. Our elders said “se boo ti mon, elewa sapon” which means we shouldn’t bite more than we can chew. 10years project should not be attempted in a year at the mercies of the ordinary citizen. Government becomes irresponsible when they eat chicken in their living room and come outside with gaari and said “we are in the mess together”. Government becomes imprudent when they eat pounded yam in their living room and come outside with a pap containing no sugar and say “we are in the mess together”.
HEAR OUR PLEAS! WE ARE HUNGRY AND ANGRY!
