Job Title: Operations Support Manager: Production Services

Purpose of Role

To drive improvements to deliver and exceed business requirements across Brewing and Engineering and to manage the departmental Training and Development agenda. This requires the management of an integrated improvement plan based on WCM principles aligned to QCDSM targets, combining technical training and development for all levels in the departments. To champion all Profit Improvement Projects (PIP’s) in the department and play a role as coach to all PIP leaders

Context/Scope:

Nigeria is currently the world's third largest market for the Guinness Brand. Lagos and Benin Breweries, each produce c.1.5 to 1.6 million hectolitres of various Guinness products per annum. The products are made for the local, national and export markets. GNPLC is striving towards world class manufacturing (WCM) standards, and are investing huge resources into continuous improvement of their operations through Business Centred Maintenance (BCM) including Profit Improvement Projects (PIPs), training and development of their staff through the Competency Acquisition Process (CAP) and capital for the latest technology, especially in packaging.
The Operations Support Manager: Production Services is ideally a brewing and engineering professional, an expert practitioner of WCM continuous improvement tools and a competent training and development practitioner. The incumbent ensures that both, the individual development of staff through CAP and the departmental goals are co-ordinated in a coherent WCM strategy. The incumbent is responsible for the co-ordination of all BCM improvement initiatives in the department and driving all PIP’s. Reports to the Operations Improvement Manager, is a key member of the Brewing and Engineering department’s Level 2 teams, with a strong dotted line to the respective HOD’s.   

Top 3-5 Accountabilities:

1. Drive Continuous Improvement initiatives in brewing and engineering through BCM and facilitate PIP’s to deliver departmental QCDSM stretch targets using:
- Principles of WCM
- Process Control and Performance Measurement
- Root cause analysis, Formal problem Solving and Ishikawa
- Quick changeover (SMED), 5S etc.
- PIP process
2. Drive a step change in maintenance standards through the implementation of BCM by:
- Planning and facilitating RCM Analysis sessions
- Planning and reviewing routine maintenance activities
- Rigorous auditing and reporting of maintenance KPIs
3. Develop improvement project proposals and manage proposals through approval and implementation
4. Drive departmental capability building using the CAP framework by:
- Supporting development of departmental BTB Development Plans
- Agreeing individual staff and manager Training Needs Analyses with HODs
- Developing an annual Training Plan, and budget accordingly.
- Developing and maintaining a Training Records Database.
- Managing the SIT programme from recruitment to confirmation in departments
- Liaising with ITF
- Providing training, coaching and assessment support.
Develop and implement Visual Management tools for tracking of key department KPIs.

Leadership Responsibilities

Key role is to manage the Brewing and Engineering department’s Training and Development agenda through the CAP process.
Interacts with and influences Brewing and Engineering staff, Shift Managers, Brewing Manager, Engineers, Engineering Manager, Operations Improvement Manager and Operations Development Dept.

Qualification & Experience Required

Technical graduate in science or engineering with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in an operational or project management role in the Food or Drink or Manufacturing sector, ideally in brewing and/or engineering.
Competent in theory and practise of:
- Principles of WCM
- Maintenance Strategy
- Business Centred Maintenance (BCM)
- Profit Improvement Projects (PIP)
- Process Control and Performance Measurement
- Root cause analysis, Formal problem Solving and Ishikawa
- Quick change-over and The 5S System
General Principles of training and competency acquisition (CAP).
Facilitation of team based improvement activities, with general principles of effective management and supervision of skilled teams
Working knowledge of Diageo Health, Safety, and Environment policies.
Good communication and presentation skills.
Computer literate in Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Competency in packaging management and prioritisation of resources to meet key targets, while setting high standards & stretching goals for self & others to exceed internal & external customer needs
Knowledge of Guinness policies is an added advantage.
Structured problem evaluation & solving skills and ready to make decisions, take the initiative and originate action.
