Total Quartz 9000 5W-40 Engine Oil Good To Service This Car? by nickxtra(m): 7:36pm On May 30, 2015
Hello, please I just replaced my car engine oil with Total 5W-40 quartz 9000 engine oil. My car is Nissan Primera P11 1999/2001. The manual states 5W-30 for cold climate and 20W-40 or 20W-50 for other climate. Even from the previous owner's Nissan history of service booklet, I discovered that it has always been serviced with 5W-30 oil and in the subsequent services, Total 10W-40 was used, each in an interval of about 10,000km mileage. So after going through, I decided to get 10W-40 for the service, but that grade was not available at the various places I went to, but later got 5W-40(for 8,500 Naira) at Total station, Kubwa, Abuja, which I now used in servicing the car. Just want to know if I am on point by using the Total 5W-40 instead of the 5W-30 and 10W-40? Expecting your views and advice, pls

The answer stares you in the face, yet you refuse to consider it. The car came from a temperate region; even then the original owner found it wise to move up to 10w40. Use our 20w50 which the manual referred to as "for other climate."
Let me quote what the factory service manual of your car says:
"For warm and cold areas: 10W-30 is suitable. The use of 5W-30 can have a positive effect on fuel economy (ACEA A1-98). For hot areas: 20W-40 and 20W-50 are suitable. For cold and warm areas: 10W-30 is preferable for ambient temperatures above −20°C (−4°F). On turbocharger models, 5W-20 is not recommended, and 5W-30 should be use only below 0°C (32°F). For hot areas: 20W-40 and 20W-50 are suitable."
Where would you put Nigeria: cold, warm, or hot?

Let me also remind you that there are places in the us that are as far hotter than Nigeria yet they stick to 5w30. Is Dubai not hotter than Nigeria. What grade of oil do you fink they use?

Goodness me! Isn't it clear from the manual I've quoted verbatim? If Dubai is hotter than Nigeria then it's inadvisable to "stick to 5w30." Hm, places hotter in the US than Nigeria. Yes, no doubt but they don't have unremittingly high temperatures as we do. The same place that might have >35 degrees C could fall to <5 degrees. Do we have such fluctuations in Nigeria? The point is, if you use lower viscous oil in Nigeria they'd degrade so fast because the temps are constantly high. If you don't change them on time then you risk your engine knocking.
Strange, you harp so much on the much vaunted 5w30 recommended by manuals, now when you are presented with another manual that prescribes otherwise and gives variations you say such manual cannot be right.
Have you ever thought why in the so-called hot areas of the US their radiator coolant contains anti-freeze properties? Here in Nigeria what we just have is the coolant? We don't need anti-freeze of course. For you, of course, the coolants here are to be discarded because they don't meet the requirements of the manuals.

@Nickxtra, TOTAL Quartz 9000 is perfect for your car. I realised that people using the 20w-50 in that car tend to have sludge build up over time, especially if they constantly drive short distances. Besides, the Quartz 9000 is full synthetic so you don't need to change oil and filter as frequently as when you use the 20w-50.

When car manufacturers prescribe oil specifications, what is uppermost is suitability/performance, and not the rate of oil degradation. It is taken for granted that once you change your oil at recommended time the issue of sludge is non-existent. Therefore when you advance the argument of sludge, it's only a reflection of the negligent car owner in keeping up with proper maintenance. The car manufacturer would rather bother on performance than on sludge which he believes should not arise.
Hey, it is not as if I'm making a fetish out of 20w50 in our land, but then a blind adherence to anything less than 10w40 smacks no less than myopia.

Bro, u're right on track, I also make use of a primera p11-144. I mostly service the vehicle wit the recommended 10w-40 semi synthetic, but the last time I serviced the vehicle, I couldn't find the 10w-40 variant, so I just had to settle for total 15w-50 semi synthetic which I believe is just as good. But I believe the key to having a well maintained engine is by adhering to a proper servicing schedule.

If u check the p11 144 manual very well ,u will note that the 5w30 is the only oil grade that the manufacturer recommend that will give the best fuel economy and works at all range of temperature .So if u want the best for your car in term of performance ,fuel mileage ,I will advice you go for 5w30 oil grade ,though 5w40 is equal good for p11 144 as well .
I use p11 144 as well and the car still give me fuel mileage of over 12km/litre even at old age mileage of over 300,000 km and i have never use any engine oil other than 5w30 for servicing .
If u need info on getting good quality 5w30 or other grades (5w20,10w40 etc ) @ good price ,u can call autologic @ 08061166316.Free Delivery available to any part of the country

Thanks. I will reach you when it is due for service. Its just that I was advised against engine oil brands like milemaster, coastal, Hardex and others where grades like 5W30 synthetics oil are common and cheaper. I don't know why many people consider them not good products. Do you have any clue about this trend?
