The Lamentation & Pain Of Residents In Alagbole-akute Area (PHOTOS) by tosmartak(m): 7:34am On Jun 05, 2015 |
For the 16 years which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was the ruling party in the country, the people of Alagbole-Akute in Ifo local government have always remained loyal to the ACN/APC. The people of these areas have voted en-mass for the ACN (Now APC) and as a result, in the 2011 governorship polls in Ogun state, the party’s candidate, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, defeated former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel of the PDP to become Ogun state governor. In return for their votes, one demand residents of Alagbole- Akute have continued to put forward to Governor Amosun is the reconstruction of the Ijoko- Berger road. This is the road that stretches from Sango/Ijoko through Akute, Alagbole up to Berger part of Lagos state. Instead of granting this singular wish of thousands of residents living in these suburbs of Lagos state that fall within the boundary of Ogun state, Governor Amosun has made their situation worse. Residents of these outskirts have been going through hard times. Governor Ibikunle Amosun at the beginning of his first term in office announced that he would be going on a road reconstruction projects in the state to build overhead bridges and link roads to ease transport for road users. While he has achieved that goal in Ijebu Ode, Abeokuta, Sagamu (partly), the governor has failed to complete or even go half way to complete the project in Ifo local government of the state. Early 2014, Governor Amosun visited Akute, Alagbole and other adjoining villages and promised to complete the ongoing reconstruction of the Sango/Ijoko- Berger road. Almost a year now, construction work on the road project has stopped and residents in Alagbole-Akute areas have been going through hard times. Alagbole-Akute residents have had to use canoes to cross over from Akute to Yakoyo to enter bikes to get to work. In a recent interview on TVC, Governor Amosun had denied insinuation that the road project was abandoned because of his reelection campaign. He claimed that the reduced allocation his government was getting from the federal government was the reason he could not pay the contractors to complete the bridge. The question many residents asked then was: why build a castle when you only have materials for a duplex? Since the rainy season started, residents of Alagbole-Akute have been going through hard times to get to their work places in Lagos due to the abandoned road project. One Okada rider who lives in the area told this writer (who also lives in the area), “Amosun no pity us for here at all. This suffering is too much" Many residents in the area believe that Amosun ignored the region because of its close proximity to Lagos state. A Banker, who identified himself as Bode, narrated how tax payment forms were brought to his bank on Allen Avenue, Ikeja. He said, “they brought a form for us in the office telling us to identify if we live in Lagos or Ogun state. Some people were saying Amosun wants to collect tax money from those living in Akute, Alagbole and other suburbs of Lagos state while he is not doing anything to better their lives.” Since Amosun was sworn-in as Governor of Ogun state for the second term last Friday, many residents of Alagbole-Akute are hoping he would bring an end to these sufferings by making sure the construction company in charge of the road project gets back to work as soon as possible.
