The Status Of Federal House Of Representatives Speakership by Nobody: 8:43pm On Jun 06, 2015
This thread is to enlighten people with respect to the status of the House of Representative Speakership.
Earlier today, after reading this thread https://www.nairaland.com/2361982/speakership-gbajabiamila-wins-apc-primaries, lots of people had the false impression that Hon Femi Gbajabiamila has been elected Speaker of the Federal House of Representative. Some supporters of Hon Gbajabiamila are even celebrating, chanting victory songs and calling Hon Dongara to sheath his sword.
The status is that there is NO Speaker-elect of Federal House of Representative as at today 06/06/2015.

How The Speaker is Chosen:
The Constitution is very clear on how House of Representative Speaker is to emerge. According to Section 50(1b)
"There shall be a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves.
The position of the law is that the Speaker of the House and his/her Deputy are to emerge by election, and only members of the house irrespective of party affiliation are eligible to stand as candidate(s) and also participate in the voting process. As at today, no such election has taken place.

The Status of The "APC" Speaker Primaries
The so-called APC "Speaker" Primary election that produced Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker is alien to the law. It has binding on no one, not even on APC members, and has no effect whatsoever in the process. Hon Gbajabiamila's emergence as Speaker of the APC promary is nothing but the "advisory" position of the party.

Can Gbajabiamila Lose The Speakership?
Absolutely YES!
APC has 214 Lawmakers in the House, PDP 121, while LP, APGA and Accord have 10 combined. Of all the APC members, 154 endorsed Gbajabiamila, 61 members boycotted the so called "primary". Hon Dogara will emerge Speaker should the pro-Dogara 61 APC legislators and the 121 PDP members vote for him(Dogara) on the day of the election irrespective of who the other 10 non PDP/APC members cast their vote for. With the adoption of a PDP candidate for the Deputy Speaker position, Ðongara will most likely get the nod of PDP contingents.

2011 Precedent:
In 2011 the PDP adopted Hon Mulikat Adeola and the party instructed all its members to vote for the Ogbomoso born Mulikat for the position. However, it was not to be as the ACN/CPC(APC) and rebellious PDP members voted against the PDP candidate, and voted Hon Saminu Tambawal instead. It won't be surprising for PDP to take their own pound of flesh by voting against the official APC nominee.

While nobody has been elected Speaker of the Federal House of Respresentative, I congratulate Hon Femi Gbajabiamila on his emergence as Speaker of Federal House of All Progressive Congress.

God Bless Us All

Protection Seeker, you have started again with your jaw jaw, hollow, intellectually dishonest analysis of issues, and at end of the day, you will have "shiit"and eggs thrown at your face!

Who told you, The Hausa PDP Reps, The Yoruba PDP, The absentee APC reps will all vote for Dogara?

Mr. Taniod, you better start addressing Gbaja as your speaker to enable you prepare your attack and criticism early!

Should PDP queue up behind Dogara and he emerges Speaker, it means PDP will have the Deputy slot and will defacto call the shots in the House, just as APC called the shots in the 7th House. This will weaken the APC and also a precursor for 2019.

Just anything to stay relevant. Anybody thinking all the PDP and the remaining 10 non APC/PDP members will vote for Dogara is just been childish and foolish and if there is anything Tinubu is good at it is poaching players from the opposition's camp to his side.

Tinubu kicking PDP and Tanoids ass since 1715.

APC is renowned for organising the worst primaries where the least qualified candidate is hand picked . How they will get away with this scam will be dependent on how they are able to fool the remaining house of rep.

APC have no business with the Tuesday election. They won't be there to supervise nor campaign for the party's nominee.
With the 121 PDP members, Dongara need the 10 non APC/PDP members, 121 PDP legislators, and just 50 APC legislators to clinch the seat. It is possible

OP in d case of PDP in 2011, it was not an election among PDP rep members but an imposition by Obasanjo and other PDP big wig. But in this case, there was an election among APC members. This is not an imposition.

I agree with you that Gbabiajamala can lose d main election in d house
. But he have more chance of winning than dangara

How United State Speaker is Selected

The House of Representatives elects the Speaker of the House on
the first day of every new Congress and in the event of the death
or resignation of an incumbent Speaker. The Clerk of the House
of Representatives requests nominations: there are normally two,
one from each major party (each party having previously met to
decide on its nominee) . The Clerk then calls the roll of the
Representatives-elect, each Representative-elect indicating the
surname of the candidate he or she is supporting.
Representatives-elect are not restricted to voting for one of the
nominated candidates and may vote for any person, even for
someone who is not a member (or member-elect) of the House at
all. They may also abstain by voting "present". [3]

Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives

Note that it is stated that the political parties made the decision of
who to contest ahead of time. And each party only present one
person.
APC is doing the right thing
