The Producers of Ogogoro under the umbrella of Raw Gin Producers Association of Nigeria, RGPAN, are pleading with the federal government not to ban the local drink, Ogogoro, despite its link to a rising casualty in Rivers and Ondo states in the country.

The Chairman of the association, Mr. Aritson Kroboakpo said in Lagos yesterday that native gin, whose production and consumption in Nigeria pre-dates independence and is not injurious to health, unless when adulterated.

Kroboakpo also told the federal government that faking of products, is not peculiar to ogogoro. He said the association is ready to work with the government to ensure that quacks in the local gin production are fished out and eliminated.

While the associations propositions are tenable as to production and consumption of ogogoro predating Nigeria's independence, also the issue of quackery and adulteration.

The fact is outside the published instances of the death of consumers lately, people die and are being incapacitated everyday from the scourge- ogogoro and variants of tinctures bitters and blends,
No control, no standard.

These same hazards are reminiscent of the bootlegging era and moonshine period of the America in the early 20th century.
when illicit gin(ogogoro) production and consumption become popular in middle and lower class Americans. Crime rates exploded, violence was rife, more homes were broken.
where and when thousands of middle-aged American men died or where incapacitated due to proliferation of illicit gin.

Outside the fatality of the immediate consequences of death and incapacitation these ogogoro joints are festering grounds for other communicable diseases as TB, emphysema etc.

Ogogoro should remain banned to the general public but blenders.
