This is a hilarious, epic and classic photo of Mr. James Nwachi (2nd left) and this is his send-off party to the US. He is said to be the first member from Afikpo, Eastern Nigeria (Ebonyi State) to travel abroad and study at the Central College, Kansas, US. And in that honour, a feast was organized for him.. The villagers including the children surrounded him as they probably saw him as their hero who would better their lives and change their fortunes.

Ebonyi as far as I know might not be like other states in SE but that doesnt denote that they are not doing great in growth economically and other wise.

Op l think you should take this correction. Mr James Nwachi was the first Ehugbo (Afikpo) man to school in Central College Kansas, US not the first man from that side to study abroad. That picture was taken between 1959 and 1960.

The first governor of eastern region Ezeogo Sir Dr Francis Akanu Ibiam, the former Isiali 1 of Unwana, Afikpo studied in the University of St Andrews (the oldest university in Scotland, UK) where he graduated with a medical degree in 1934.
