Obafemi Awolowo Hall, OAU, Ile-Ife is one of the nine halls residence in the university used by male undergraduates. It has a total of eight blocks with three floors each; two blocks of bungalow called self-help and eight other bungalows situated close by known as annex. In all, the hall has eighteen blocks of hostel. In addition, there are porter's lodge, coffee rooms, TV room, dinning hall, kitchen, store, offices, etc.
Built in 1966 with two blocks for female students as a temporary hostel, it was renamed Obafemi Awolowo Hall in 1967.

The social life and political life of the hall make it outstanding when compared to the other eight halls.

It is reputed to be the hallmark of Ife politics. Its dinning hall serves as the "parliament building" where members of the Students' Representatives Council hold their sittings. Their sittings usually commence at 9pm and end 3am the following day. The dinning also serves as the meeting point of students and member of the Central Executive Council in congress, especially when Afrikan Amphitheatre is locked.
Political groups like Afrikan Forward Movement (AFORM), Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM), Pace Setter (PC), etc hold symposia in the hall, where they discuss politics, economy and diplomacy. One unique thing about these groups is that they advertise call for papers, in which students are asked to send their entries on topical issues which are vetted and then publishlished.
The political sagacity of Awo boys extends to their rooms, where they engage themselves in political discourses that sometime run till midnight.

The third floor of Block 8 in the hall, dubbed July 10
Secretariat, serves as the residence of the members of the Central Executive Council like the Students' Union President, Secretary General, Assistant Secretary General, PRO, Sports Director and Social Director. The head of Keggite Club International has the world wide headquarters on this floor. The club was founded by the University of Ife Students about 53 years ago.

The social life of the hall is unique with what its residence call "aro", a funny way of saying jokes, playing pranks, especially in Yoruba.
While it can be said that the social life of the hall runs through out the session in the school's calendar, that of rain semester is full of fun. It is during this semester that the hall, just like others, hold their week. The week is characterized by different events on each day, with night and ewa day as being the most fun filled.
The ewe (beans) day usually holds on Saturdays. Students queue with their plates, pots, etc with which they are served with beans. Though the portion they get is little compared with what they cook themselves, the fun in it makes students engage in it irrespective of their levels. A cow is cooked and then five pieces shared in each room.
The week of Awolowo hall, unlike others that don't go beyond their car parks, hold a night of comedy, jokes, music, etc in Afrika Amphitheatre.

Stealing and cultism are two things Awo boy frown at. Those caught stealing or suspected to be cultists are taken to one of the coffee rooms (Awo zoo) or the dinning room (Awo cafè), where they are investigated and punished. If found guilty, volunteers are asked to flog them. In some cases, when being taken there even from other halls of residence, the culprits are forced to raise a cadboard papers bearing their names, departments, matric numbers, etc written on them.

The hall holds debate on a regular basis with Obafemi Awolowo Hall, University of Ibadan.

I accidentally entered Awo grounds (taking a shortcut) when i was new there, I was quickly set straight.

I think I might have gone there a few times in the following years though, just not that often.

OP, you forgot to mention the intellectual ability of Awoites. If you take any stubborn question in any field to Awo cafe, it will be solved. I just love reading there, even with their Aro.
