What a bloody weekend! Gunmen attack footballers.

Seven supporters of Ocean Boys Football Club of Yenagoa lay dead, yesterday, after an unprovoked attack on their bus by gunmen at Ughweru near Ughelli in Delta State.
Sectarian clashes in Bauchi also left at least four people dead, barely two months after similar disturbances in neighbouring Jos.

Two other men were also killed in Yenagoa on Friday by people suspected to be cultists.
Bayelsa United and the Ocean Boys, ordinarily should play their home matches in Yenagoa. But following on-going renovation of the Yenagoa Township Stadium, their home matches were relocated to Delta State.

The assassins whose number could not be immediately ascertained rode in an unmarked black Infinity Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV.

They were said to have trailed the supporters bus - a Mitsubishi L300 bus with plate number XT78APP- and on overtaking them unexpectedly opened fire on their hapless victims at Ughweru on the Ughelli Patani stretch of the East West Road.

Time was between 1.30 and 2.25 p.m. A version said 13 were killed, although seven corpses were confirmed as having been deposited in the mortuary of the Ughelli General Hospital. Doctors were battling last night to save the lives of the others.

The chief of staff, Bayelsa State Government House, Mr. Samuel Ogbuku, confirmed that seven bodies had been deposited in the mortuary. He had to abandon his official duties to rush to the scene to take charge of the situation.
