News From Division One League (which is at the business end)

Permit me to shift attention to the National Division One League today at the expense of the Nigerian top flight, the Globacom Premier League.

The reason is to analyse the chances of the front runners in the second string league to beat the rest of their competitors to join the big boys next season.

Followers of the National Division One League will agree with me that there are a whole lot of talents and quality in the hitherto down-throden second tier league.

Some of the nation’s foremost teams or the ones my Editor Dare Esan use to call TRADITIONAL TEAMS are languishing there. Some of them are labouring assiduously to swim out of the turbulent waters of the tough lower league.

Did I hear you mention 3SC? Or could it be Dolphins, Insurance Kwara United or Plateau United?
Anyway, no matter which side of the divide you stand, there are only four matches remaining on the fixtures before the curtain will be drawn. And it is only after this four round of matches that boys will be separated from the men. Here we go:

Kwara United
The Atonja Warriors, as the Ilorin outfit are called by their fans, look set to emerge tops in the National League Division One A group.
They were relegated last season and coach John Obuh was called in to salvage things. Like the old Stationary Stores were said to be guided by the spirit of their late founder, Israel Adebajo, Kwara United appear to be enjoying protection and guidance of a host number of spirits – AD Okafor, Abdullahi Bebe and Kafaru Alabi.
Don’t ask me why. But Kwara United currently top the group with 48 points, five points clear of second FC Taraba. .
In the remaining five games, Kwara United will play two at home (see fixtures above). Three of the games are on the road.
Mathematically, they may win all two home games to make a haul of 54 points.
Out of the three away matches there is a mathematical possibility two points on the road (probably vs NAF and Unicem Rovers).
If this eventually comes to pass, they would have stretched their total points haul to 56. Jalingo and Vola may not be a fertile venue for Kwara United to hunt for away points.
Reason is that FC Taraba and Adamawa United are actively involved in the promotion race and will be out to make things difficult for the Atonia Warriors. But before the trip to Vola for Adamawa which is the last game of the campaign, Kwara United would have had their promotion ticket signed, sealed and delivered, presumably after the trip to Calabar.

FC Taraba
The sleepy town of Jalingo is almost set for its first feel of Nigerian top flight football courtesy of FC Taraba.
FC Taraba are currently second five adrift of leaders, Kwara United, (see table). With five matches to the close of the season, FC Taraba know they have to tightly screw their heads onto their necks tightly if hopes to actualise their dream.
With three away matches to honour (see fixtures) FC Taraba could pick points in Jos (vs Jets) and Calabar (vs Unicem Rovers). May be, just maybe, they can reap two points on the road and ensure that they make the maximum six at home against Kwara United and Sokoto United.
Mathematically, FC Taraba can a mass eight points from the matches. Then add this to the 43 points already in their kitty and you get 51 points.
Adamawa United
Adamawa United currently lie on third spot on the table with 42 points with Rauch Bees. The two sides have massive goals advantage of +15 and +11 respectively unlike FC Taraba with just +8.
This may count in their favour especially if FC Taraba fail to make their one point advantage count.
Dolphins
Dolphins are clear leaders in group B with 52 points as they have not been generous at home to visiting teams.
Before now they have won all previous home games. This makes their Liberation stadium a slaughter slab for visitors on points voyage.
Interestingly too, the Stanley Eguma squad have impressive away record which includes three victories on the road and four draws.
It could be suggested that, based on current form and record, Dolphins can win their two remaining home ties against ambitious sides - Delta Force and First Bank (See fixtures).
If one consider their away record, it is possible that they could earn one point away to Ila FC ( they last 0-1) mathematically they can garner seven points from a possible maximum of 15.
Add six points to 52 and the answer is 58 points.
With 58 points (possible) Dolphins are safely through to the Premier League after emerging tops in National Division One League group B.
Shooting Stars
Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan have spent a couple of seasons in the lower league. There is no better time for them to advance to where they rightly belong in Nigerian football than now.
With 47 points in the kitty, the fixtures of the remaining four matches indicates that they have two of the matches at home.
At this point, it is difficult for any visiting team to expect good result in Ibadan. And should the Oluyole Warriors get the six maximum points in their two home ties versus leaders, Dolphins and Anambra United, that would take their points haul to 53.
How good the Frank Howard men are will be put to test when they travel to Delta Star Insurance and First Bank of Lagos.
Unfortunately, all two away foes have their eyes on the promotion ticket which makes it difficult to permute any possibility of the Ibadan side earning any point on the road at this point.
And with 53 points, 3SC will be pretty sure of featuring in next season’s Premier League.
First Bank
First Bank of Lagos have an outside chance to make it to the Premier League. They have 44 points with just five matches to end the season.
Their remaining three away matches (see fixtures) are such that it is easier to squeeze out water from stone than for the bankers to earn the needed points that could over haul 3SC’s promotion ambition.

Dolphin Gains Promotion

Two-time champions Dolphins have made a return to the Nigerian Premier League after two seasons in the National First Division wilderness.
Dolphins lost 2-1 to 3SC on Saturday in Ibadan, but with third-placed First Bank losing 1-0 to Delta Force, the Port Harcourt side kept their eight-point advantage over the Bankers with two games to go, meaning they cannot finish lower than second.

Dolphins went into the Ibadan cauldron knowing that a draw would all but ensure their top-flight qualification, especially if First Bank failed to win. But they were quickly on the ropes and went behind when Lateef Adigun took advantage of a panicked Dolphins defence to head a 15th-minute corner-kick home.

3SC Almost there

At fulltime, Dolphins’ 55 points proved enough to give them a place in the elite. Shooting Stars move up to 51 points and have their promotion fate in their own hands.

First Bank will need to beat Dolphins in Port Harcourt – where the Garden City side are yet to lose a game all season – and hope that 3SC drop points.

SOLUTION TO THE NIGERIA LEAGUE

Here is a simple plan to change the phase of our league and let it grow naturely all by itself;

Every club in the National and Premiership whether government or privately owned must find a way bringing together about 20 enterprenuer with good understanding in sports business that will also be ready to undergo regular refresher course to understand the modern way of sports business. these 20 business guru will form the first set of a truly independent board of the club. I suggest that at least 5 member of the 20man board should be an indegine while the rest could be from any part of the world.

Each member should be worth more than 20million naira and be ready pay the sum of 5million as their contribution a board member and as part of 1.5% ownership of the club (with the opportunity to buy more in the future but not more than 20%). Gold members (limited to 20)

Each of the 20man board is expected to use their vast business strenght to bring in another 50 business minded personal who is expected to pay the sum of 100,000 naira (they will be called the silver members; the number of silver member coming through each of the gold member must be 50 or more depending on the gold member ability. Every silver member must become member only through any of the gold members; so so the gold member must ensure that such person is not one with questionable character.

The Silver member is expected to invite at least 100 new member to be called the Bronze member who are expected to pay the sum of 10,000 naira each. the number of Bronze member coming through the Silver member excede 100 depending on the ability of the Silver member to convince his friend and relation and must ensure that such person is not one with questionable character.

The Bronze member is expected to invite at least 50 new member to be called the Green Member that is expected to pay the sum 5,000 naira each. the number of Green Member coming the the Bronze Member must be at least 50 or more depending on the ability of the Bronze member to convince his friend and relation and must ensure that such person is not one with question character.

from the above in my calculation we have a little more than a 250million which is only the minimum, but when you consider the fact that more people will certainly join when they realize that in all parts of the country every state is doing something simple; lets paint a senario where we know it is possible to create a membership club of 100,000.

It is possible to have about 50 people per club in the gold membership = 250,000,000

It is possible to have about 2500 people per club in the silver membership= 250,000,000

it is possible to have about 25,000 people per club in the bronze membership=250,000,000

then the green members could be about 100,000, = 500,000,000

this number above represents less than 10% of the lowest populated state.

given into account the possibility above a club can make up to about N1.25Billion; also considering the possibility that membership will be renewed yearly and member will be expected to pay a reduced some yearly to reinstate their commitment and support for the growth of the club;

The yearly payment by club members should be as follow:

Gold = 20,000 multiply by a possible 50 members

Silver = 5000 multiply by a possible 2500 members

Bronze = 2500 multiply by a possible 25000 members

Green = 1,500 multiply by a possible 100000 members

annual membership renewal today for most clubs by this possibility could be more than 200million; considering the possibility also that some state like lagos has the capacity and population to surpass the number, then it is so possible for clubs in nigeria to survive without funding from the state.

But we actually the need the government support to organize and make this work

yes many people will disagree with most of the things i have said here or think of it as something that is not possible; but remember most people never believe a black man can become the president of America.

all the clubs must be headed by an elected president, whose tenure must be renewed or halted by an election.

Since every member is expect to join the club through one of the 20 board member then it makes it easy to setup an electoral system like Barcelona and Real Madrid (in subsequent response I will give details of how a smooth and credible election can take place for a credible board to run the club with majority support)

Given a credible setup, we are sure sponsors will like to be part of the project where a club can boost of over a 100,000 strong support; i imagine a situation where a club can rack at least 500 Million each from a single sponsor and if they can command the respect of 10 sponsors then you do the calculation (it is possible because even with the current poor situation Warri Wolve has a contract that is worth 100million) so with the idea I have suggested here I see even foreign patronage.

Every state owner club that is transformed using this advice; we expect that they have a stadium to themselves; do they have to build a new stadium or use the state owned stadium; well, it is simple, every state has at least two stadium all the state government should do is hand over the existing stadium to the club but before that is done we need to first get a loan from the state government or grant that is payable over 10 years; part of this grant will be used to refurbish the stadium to an international standard fitted with all basic amenities suitable for modern event; we expect every turf to be lush green so we can either go for the emirate type of turf where artificial is mixed with real grass or go for the FIFA 2 turf used at the Teslim Balogun stadium in Lagos.

We must ensure that the stadium has a control room with inbuilt HD and SD facility capable of transmitting matches to any part of the world.

TO THE COACHES:
Any club that has the capacity to raise over N2Billion yearly should go for the best or some of the best coach around, local or foreign; the coaches should be allowed to choose his technical crew like every professional club.

TO THE PLAYERS:

Like the coaches the club should be allowed to go for the best regardless of nationality but effort should be made by the club to setup at least one super-center to groom young players locally in each of the local government in their state.

players should be advised or informed that they are role-model and must act like one all the time; part time English education should be given to most of them in order to be able to express themselves occasionally.

In a choice location the clubs are expected to build accommodation where the players and the coaching crew will be housed; in my opinion 6 block of 10 storey building with each block having 20 apartment of 2 bedroom flat for the players; or the six blocks 2 should be used for the players since more clubs usually have about 35 players. the other 4 blocks should be 3 bedroom apart where apart from the coaching crew other members of the public are expected to rent the apartments so that the club will generate fund. Around the area where this apart is located is where you will find the club training ground, a mini mart, swimming pool, and other basic amenities needed by the players and their neighbours.

The club can also take advantage of their new status to partner kit manufactures, or the states can invite some manufacturers into their state and give them exclusive opportunity to kits the home club for 10 years tax free provided they will setup their company in the state and open shops in all the local government and employs Nigerians; it doesn't matter if the company is known provide they can manufacture quality sports wears; the state should give them more incentive to lure them to capitalize on the opportunity.

Or states from all the geopolitical zones can form an alliance to invite any of the interested kit companies to setup their presence in the zone and open mega shops in all the states of the zones.
