some few questions about the map of nigeria.

1. how come northern oyo state is more northern than kogi and benue states and yet oyo is considered south while benue and kogi are called north?

2. how come akwa ibom and cross rivers are more eastern than abia, enugu, anambra, imo and ebonyi states yet we say there are south-south and not south east?

3. how come edo and delta are also called south-south when in fact there are actually located in the west?

4. why is niger called a central state when its actually in the north west?

and how come even the so called educated nigerians have never thought of correcting this asertions?

all those you pointed out are present to confuse minds and not because they necesarily mean much. wasnt it until recently we started hearing south-south, niger-delta and all the other crap we hear these days.

soon we'll hear names like south central, north central, south south east, they might even go further by giving different time zone to create an identity for the crap they created.

tpia:

tribal and political explanations.

Nigerian politics is based on tribe, and that explains most of what you noticed.

Oyo proper used to be further north than the current state. The seat of power was in kwara, I think. It was later relocated south.

Edo and Delta are midwest, not south south. just like there's middle belt. I think they used to be part of the western region until the midwest was created. However, the geographical appelations are more a reflection of the political picture.

south south covers the oil producing regions most times.

the point is politics shouldnt be played with geography,if its north it should be north and if its south it should be south regardless of wether the person is hausa or yoruba

If you are using the 4 cardinal points then cities like Yola , Calabar, Jalingo should be eastern Nigeria, that is why jos and bauchi are regarded as eastern nigeria in the western media recently. The East as we know it in a 4 cardinal point will qualify as southern Nigeria, why most yoruba state will qualify as western Nigeria. States like Kwara, Niger and Abuja will be qualify as western Nigeria if u use 4 cardinal points. The North will be for Kaduna, kANO, jIGAWA, and Katsina. You will be suprise that Sokoto is also western Nigeria when using the 4 cardinal point. For Clearity the 8 CARDINAL POINT IS BETTER, Because Sokoto, Niger, becomes North West . And cities like Yola, Jalingo,Maiduguri becomes North East and most Igbo state can be called eastern Nigeria. Although Imo Anambra and Eboyi are not really eastern par se, the true eastern states is Cross River state and most Igbo states are actually east central. By using the word east central ones is now coming out of the 8 cardinal point and entering the territory of the 16 cardinal point. it depend om what compass u want to use.
