Over 600 million Samsung mobile device users have been affected by a significant security risk on leading Samsung models, including the recently released Galaxy S6.

The risk comes from a pre-installed keyboard that allows an attacker to remotely execute code as a system user. The code comes into your phone as a “language pack” leaving your phone vulnerable to an attack.

Once executed, an attacker could remotely:

1. Access sensors and resources like GPS, camera and microphone.

2. Secretly install malicious app(s) without the user knowing.

3. Tamper with how other apps work or how the phone works.

4. Eavesdrop on your messages or voice calls.

5. Give attempt to access sensitive personal data like pictures and text messages.

NowSecure's mobile security researcher Ryan Welton discovered this flaw in 2014 and informed Samsung. It was reported that Samsung asked NowSecure to wait for three months before going public with the vulnerability.

According to NowSecure, it informed the Korean tech-giant about the vulnerability in November 2014. Samsung reportedly gave a patch to mobile operators across the world; however, it is unclear if carriers have passed the fix to all users.

Users cannot un-install the flawed keyboard so users are advised to avoid insecure wi-fi networks and revert to Google or other third party keypad.
