I blame d president 4 opting to work wit anyone even d likes of Saraki who has an EFCC case. While civil servants ar being owed several months salary & majority of nigerians live below $1-$2 a day, d NASS budget is higher than dat of 21 states. Is dis d change?

This is simply immoral and insane.

Where are TUC and NLC when we need them? Will they stand idly by as our created wealth is being plundered by a tiny group of lazy and overfed lawmakers?

I've stopped blaming our leaders. Every people deserve their kind of leaders. Our leaders are a sad reflection of us.

The Nigerian leaders are so fortunate to have docile and timid masses who will simply throw their hands into the heavens in frustration and prayers instead of protesting and refusing to cooperate with their leaders. They're must be very lucky.

Even the corrupt leaders are shocked how we have all allowed them to reign supreme in wealth and sleaze while the average Nigerian lives in lack and penury.

What's the APC stance on this issue? Aren't they the change agents? What of the PDP folks in the houses? In looting they're one; in stealing they're all United.

It's simple: the war on waste and corruption belongs to US! There's little any one person can do about it!

You can't get good governance on a platter. Self - preserving folks do not deserve good governance. Period!

Giftedgreen:
1. What’s up with the talk on social media about 8 billion naira clothing allowance for Nigerian legislators?

Apparently our newly inaugurated National Assembly is set to receive a whopping 8.64 billion naira to spend on clothes.

2. What? About 9 billion Naira on clothes for one person? Is this a joke? Or is it possible that someone forgot how to count the number of zeros on a figure?

Actually, the 9 billion naira is not for one person, it is the collective sum that is set to be received by every member senator and member of the House of Representatives.

This money is described as a wardrobe allowance, the amount will be split between both chambers of the National Assembly with the 109 members of the Senate receiving 21.5 million naira ($108,000) each while the 360 members of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber, will each receive 17.5 million naira.

3. Is it just me or the gluttony exhibited by our legislators is about to make me vomit all over my body?

Don’t just puke over your body just yet.

Aside from a wardrobe allowance, the National Assembly will also receive other furniture and car loan allowances. The furniture allowance will see 107 senators receive 650 million naira while 358 House of Representatives members will receive total of 2 billion naira. The lawmakers can also access car loans with senators possibly provided with 867 million naira and House of Representatives members provided with 2.8 billion naira in car loans. While ordinary members of both chambers get these allowances, two principal officers from each chamber, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House and their deputies will have furniture provided by the Federal Government.

4. I once read that Nigerian Legislators are the highest paid in the world, is that true?

Nigerian legislators, among the world’s top paid, receive annual salaries of between 32 million naira per annum. Nigerian legislators are not the highest paid in the world, they are the second highest paid, lagging behind Australia. Nigerian legislators earn about $180, 000 per annum while that of Australia earns about $210, 000 per annum.

Lawmakers in Nigeria earn around 32 million naira annually more than British lawmakers. While the lawmakers earn so much, regular Nigerians survive on the 18, 000 naira monthly minimum wage.

5. If I may ask, What is the clothing allowance of legislators in the United States and Britain?

In the United States, supplementary Congressional allowances make no provision for clothing and in the Britain, which was rocked by its own allowance scandal in 2009, clothing expenses are not listed among expenses members of parliament can claim for.

6. Is this the "change" we voted for? What are Nigerians doing about this situation?

The campaign tagged #OpenNASS is led by BudgIT, a civil start-up and outraged Nigerians have taken to social media to vent.

Vent on social media? is that the best we can do?

There are already plans by some Nigerians to protest nationwide.

Nigerians can draw inspiration from events in Kenya where citizens forced legislators to rethink increases in their pay with fierce protests in 2013.

After their demands for higher pay sparked public outcry and protests, Kenyan legislators agreed to a cut (of about $45, 000) in pay – though their new wage is still more than 40 times the country’s average income.

Activists spilled cow blood outside parliament buildings, calling members of parliament ‘MPigs’ and branding parliament “a piggy bank.”

Others organized the burning of 221 coffins outside parliament to protest the attempt by the MPs to give themselves a $110,000 bonus at the end of their term.

7. These legislooters, sorry legislators must be milking Nigeria dry, don’t you think?

What was your fist clue?

Was it when Sanusi alleged that the National Assembly spends 25% of the national budget? Let’s rephrase that for easier understanding. Sanusi said 468 people get to spend 25% of the national budget and leave the remaining 75% for 180 million people.

If that is not enough to put you in shock, remember that the yearly allocation for the National Assembly, which has less than 10,000 individuals on its payroll, surpasses the annual budgets of 21 of Nigeria’s 36 states including Katsina, Benue and Jigawa all with populations of more than 4 million people.

8. But Nigeria is in a mess financially, how are we able to give the legislators this huge amount of money?

Its true that Nigeria is dealing with financial issues which can be traced back to the slump in global crude oil prices.

Fortunately for our lawmakers and unfortunately for Nigerians fund is in a special category called statutory transfer which mandates the federal government, after receiving revenues, to make the legislators’ funds immediately available before other considerations

9. Is there any hope for Nigeria at all?

Senate President Bukola Saraki has denied that federal lawmakers get N9billion wardrobe allowance. He also said there were plans by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to reduce salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers.

Saraki, who stated this on his Twitter handle yesterday after meeting with the RMAFC boss, said the annual wardrobe allowance for each senator is N506,600 per annum, about N2.25 million ‎for their four-year tenure.

It not the best of ideas to believe anything a politician says, but when given the benefit of doubt then there might be hope for Nigeria afterall.

Without any reason, some Nigerians just have hatred for success and successful people. If the legislators decide to implement pay cut for themselves they deserved to be praised and not attacked because they have willingly decided to make sacrifice and they don't have to be insulted by anybody.

500k per year multiplied by 4 still amounts to 2 Million naira. It is still too much. They offered to SERVE so they should do so in the clothes they have now. We don't care how they look, we just want CHANGE.

What's more appalling about what these thieves of the common mans dreams are earning is that legislators in the west don't earn anything close to what they all earn annually. I wonder what justification they have if other nations with a better GDP, superior economy and higher standard of living pay their legislators lesser. Its more saddening for Nigeria because everyone who sees this become depressed and see making this kind of money as a do-or-die affair. If we are going to take armed robbers, ritualists', car snatchers, pick pockets and all forms of social vices of the street, we must begin by cutting these senators to size, enough is enough!

Mr. Rauf Aregbesola is not the only Governor owing, he just happens to be the only one who is honest enough to admit it publicly. In fact, the situation is worse in some other states given the statistics contained in a recent document I obtained from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) office in Abuja.

In Abia, the State Teaching hospital workers have not been paid for nine months; the Hospital Management workers are owed for eight months; Abia State Universal Basic Education workers, six months; Abia Local governments, owed four months while teachers in the state have not been paid for three months. In Akwa Ibom State where the immediate past Governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio had, through the State House of Assembly, legislated for himself some hefty perks from the state coffers, workers in Akwa Ibom have not been paid for April and May. Bauchi State workers are also being also owed two-month salaries.

In Benue, workers have not been paid since January while the state is also in default in pension arrears to the tune of four months. In the same state, teachers were paid only half-salaries for five months. Workers in Cross River State are also being owed salaries for two months. In Ekiti State, workers have not been paid for three months. In Enugu, whereas workers in the core civil service are owed only the salary for the month of May, those working for parastatals have not been paid for the last 12 months. Pension and gratuity have also not been paid in the state in the last five years.

In Imo State, core civil servants are owed only for the month of May but the state is in default for 14 months on pension payment and four years for gratuity. Whereas workers in Kano State are not owed, the newly recruited teachers are yet to receive any salaries three months after employment. Katsina State workers are also being owed one month salary while gratuities have not been paid.

The case of Kebbi State is peculiar as the Minimum Wage is not implemented with some workers earning as low as N7,000 per month. Kwara, Ondo and Ogun States have not paid their workers for the month of May but notably, in the case of Ogun, pension deductions in the last 52 months have not been remitted to the Pension Fund Administrator (PFA).

In Oyo State, workers have not been paid for three months while the pension arrears owed is between five to 11 months. Plateau State workers are owed salaries for six months and pension arrears for seven months. Workers in Rivers State are owed one-month salary and pension arrears for three months. While Zamfara State owes workers one month salary, some 1400 workers employed last year have not collected any salary. Meanwhile, the states that are up to date in the payment of workers are: Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Kaduna, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger and Taraba. States on which information could not be obtained are: Yobe, Sokoto and Ebonyi.

In explaining his dilemma, Aregbesola said he was deeply pained and unhappy that he had not been able to pay workers salaries in Osun State for eight months. “I have found it hard to pay the wage bills owing to the declining federal allocation to the state. Federal allocation to the state has reduced by 40 per cent since 2013, making it difficult for government to meet up its responsibilities,” he said. The governor added that the government went ahead to accumulate debts in his bid to pay salaries and now the banks are no longer extending to him such facilities.
oga am in bayelsa state and most workers have not been paid for last month where did you get your statistics from?
