Basically, owning a school is has to do with passion to ability to deliver standard education to younger ones. Even if one doesn’t have the passion to deliver quality education, then such individual must have the drive to make sure that people are well educated.

Owning a school comes with its own challenges as it is step by step process here in Nigeria. It really depends on which school you might want to own. Some people might want to start small by owning a crèche. A crèche is simply a small environment manned by experienced mothers or adults to take care of infants. In this situation, the parents of the little ones are free to go to work and come back later in the day to pick them up. Sometimes, there are risks involving the crèches. Some dubious individuals might set a crèche up just to kidnap. Therefore the crèche will only serve as an aegis to cover up criminality. The set up for a crèche might not be as expensive as that but the good thing is, when you are termed reliable and trust worthy, you make money and build confidence.

Some individuals trying to own a school might not like the idea of handling babies so here the best option might be to start up a primary or secondary institution. In a secondary institution, the pupils or students will be more aware of the environment they are in. Although one might not need to pay much attention to the students except from teaching activities. Nonetheless, let’s look at tips on how to own a school. It doesn’t really matter which actually because we will cut across everything.

1. Have a structure in place: Having a school is a huge challenge and a lot of responsibility so when an individual wants a learning institution, a structure must be in place for the co-habitants or students. The structure doesn’t really need to be fantastic but it would require passing some laid down tests. The structures must have cross ventilation so that the students don’t complain of being hot always. The building must also have chairs for the students to sit on and to aid writing. Teaching materials are supposed to be made available. Materials such as, Chalk or marker as the case may be, board, board cleaners, etc. In a university, laboratories, teaching hospitals, library, auditoriums and of course administrative blocks all have to be in place.

2. Make sure the name of the school is registered: Starting up a business is actually illegal if it’s not registered. Everybody wants to make money the legal way but for this to be done the right way; the business name has to be registered. To register a business name or name of a school you want to start up is as easy as it gets. Google is your friend. You can just search on how to register a school or business name. Also, you will have to check in with the ministry of education to alert them about your structure and intentions towards owning a school. This is actually a good step because it will prevent future disgrace. When the ministry of education is tipped about an illegal structure, they will make moves to pull down that structure since it isn’t registered. As regards a university setting, the school must be registered and the courses have to be accredited.

3. Spread the word: Yay! Now that you have a standard structure and a business name that’s been approved by the appropriate bodies, letting everyone know about your new school is the next option. Print out flyers, get a website, create blogs, produce Tv and radio commercials for the general public about the new school and what you stand to offer.

4. Have a team: Actually, owning a school might not be easily done alone or might not be a one man thing because you will need to do some running around. Take for instance, while you are at the ministry trying to legalize your new business, you will also need to have someone standing by on your behalf monitoring the ongoing work in the school premises.

5. Hire teaching professionals: Yes, a lot of Nigerians like this part. For every new establishment, employment is created. Once your school is in shape, you will require teachers who have experience to teach the students well. These teachers will also serve as a point of contact when some things go wrong in class. The teachers will also assist the students in any way possible. They will also be responsible for the cleanliness of the class, taking of student’s attendance and whatnot. Universities in this case would require lecturers, laboratory assistants and some other key positions in the school.

6. Have a school clinic: It’s almost inevitable for students to be ill. So, when there’s a situation such as cuts, bruises or slight illnesses, the pupil or student can be taken to the clinic for immediate medical attention. The school clinic is just the first place a student is taken to since whatever injury or illnesses discovered was in the premises. It’s more or less a first aid for the students but when it’s in the case of a higher institution such as a University, the clinic is expected to have clinic beds, a lot of drugs, nurses and doctors on duty.

Still contemplating when to start up a school?? Now is the best time!
