Online Recruitment Scams: How To Avoid Falling Victim by AliuAbdulwahab(m): 8:48pm On Jun 20, 2015
Here's a quick overview of just a few of the most important tips for avoiding scams in online recruitment:
1. If your prospective employer asks you for any bank details or payment prior to you actually being awarded the job and meeting them in person, chances are you're being taken for a ride. No job application should ever be dependent on any kind of advance fees or payments and no personal banking data should be exchanged by way of email.

2. Check that the employer you're applying to is in fact a registered and legitimate business by examining the listed contact details. They should have a registered postal address and at least one fixed-line telephone number which you can call ahead of time, just to ensure it is in fact valid.

3. Where an international job posting is concerned, it might be more difficult to verify telephone numbers and addresses than domestic job listings. As such, in these cases it's a good idea to carry out a quick web search of the address and the telephone number to see if they do in fact correspond with the listing.

4. When it comes to handing out your personal details like social security numbers, passport information and so on, don't give anything away until you've fully established the legitimacy of the business and the job posting itself. With this kind of information, it's frighteningly easy for anyone to steal your identity and land you in a whole mess of trouble.

5. Take a look at your CV and be sure to take out anything that could be dangerous were it to fall into the wrong hands. It's common for a paper copy of a CV to list your postal address for example, but this will not be necessary for an online application and should therefore be removed.

6. If prior to the job being awarded you are asked to fax or email across scans of your passport, driving license or anything else to prove you are who you say you are, it's almost certain you're looking at a scam. This is not standard practice so do not allow yourself to fall for it.

7. When a job posting looks too good to be true, proceed with caution as it probably is.

8. Carry out a quick background check on the company you plan to apply to before going ahead with the application – the results can often be quite revealing.

9. If in any doubt, feel free to ask the employer for references in order to check their validity and stature. While far from the standard way of doing things, such pro-activity will actually be appreciated by any business that has nothing to hide from you.
