Former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has called on the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to pay contractors of the oil pipeline surveillance project in the country.
Asari-Dokubo, who is one of the former Niger Delta agitators awarded pipeline surveillance contract by the Federal Government, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the three-month deal elapsed on June 15.
He said that the ex-minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, did not sign for the payment of the pipeline surveillance contract before she left office.
The pipeline protection project, which cut across Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States, was executed from March 15, 2015 to June 15.
Asari-Dokubo urged President Buhari to pay the contractors their money if he was truly committed to the rule of law.
“Diezani (Allison-Madueke) did not sign payment for the contract before she left. All across the six states (Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa) where the contract was awarded none of us were paid; none of the companies were paid. The Federal Government should do what is needful by paying the money they owe. The same mandate that was given to Buhari to become President was the same mandate that was given to us in a legal and binding contract.
“If Buhari is law-abiding and if his government respects the rule of law, the contractual obligations will be followed. The contract was awarded to corporate entities by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. We did not go in as individuals and the corporate entities are regarded as individuals under the law. No contract was awarded to any specific individual,” he said.
The former militant added that he and other contractors would follow due process to get their money from the Federal Government.
He appealed to the President not to set a bad precedent where government will fail to pay contractors who had executed their contracts.
“The same way they give contract to people to lift oil; the same way they give Julius Berger contracts to build roads; the same way they give people contracts to build houses; that is the same way pipeline surveillance contracts were given to us. But they (FG) are not paying for the work done. It is against the law of the land. Paying us our contract money is the right thing he (Buhari) ought to do and for any reasonable human being,” Asari-Dokubo said.

The Change APC promised has really come. Dokubo Asari now talking about rule of law and due process instead of threatening the nation with violence and war. He now knows that Marylin Ogar cannot protect him any longer.

The dura born needs to be aware that this is a democratic government and he does not have the final say to issues as it were during his dictatorship regime! Truly, these citizens had done the work they were contracted for and its only right that they are being paid what was agreed in the terms and conditions reached by the FG.

It would be unwise for the dura born to shelve their pleas and rightful demands under the carpet as these workers cut across states borders! I advise the dura born to do the right thing and forget all those military hardiness and pompousness that come around with his demeanor and thinking. Right now the boys are pleading and wanting to go through the right diplomatic and lawful channels to get their pay. However when all these fails, the rest is Better imagined then spoke off!

Forget all this Buhari toughness propaganda , we have not really seen that in the war against boko haram. If insurgency breaks out again in the Niger delta The Nigerian economy would be worse for it.
Increased defense budget and reduced oil revenues would be the direct effects.

You guys also told us Buhari destroyed maiststaine sect and would destroy boko haram in one month . But what do we have today? Bombing on daily basis The gains recorded in the last days of GEJ's regime is gradually been eroded.

If niger delta militancy resumes today, the Nigerian army as it stands is not equipped to fight a two faced war in the region and the NE simultaneously. Our economy would be brought to its knees.

Boko haram are not faceless what has Buhari done about them? You should know Buhari would not be in the field fighting these wars.He would still rely on these same Nigerian army he inherited from GEJ.

If he refuses to pay them, they will simply return to their old ways of making money through oil bunkering.

Nigeria cannot be paying people to do NOTHING.

What Dokubo and anyone that has the interest of the region should be asking is to propose way that these Youths can be employed so they can earn a living. Propose Factories, so that the Youth can be employed. Where skills are lacking, training will be organized and conducted.

But to demand Billions of Naira while sitting at Home doing nothing is Criminality on its own.

Atari dokubo need to be jailed, he only fight for his own interests ,In 2013, Dokubo Asari became a citizen of Benin and moved his wealth and assets out of the Niger Delta, Nigeria and relocated to Cotonou, Benin Republic where he built several schools, colleges and a university for the school children and students in Cotonou. Dokubo Asari however did not built any school, college or university in Rivers State, Delta State, Enugu, Bayelsa or any other states of the Niger Delta
