Deciding on a basic logo style should be one of your very first steps in developing a visual brand. Once you decide which type of logo design will work best for your company, you can choose a logo color scheme, font and other details to represent your identity.
There are a number of different types of logo “marks” you could choose to utilize for yourself. In this article, we’ll briefly explain the five main types of logos and show some examples of each you’ll probably recognize.

SYMBOL OR ICON (BRANDMARK)
They use imagery that conveys a literal or abstract representation of your organization.
This type of logo works best for very high-profile companies that are influential enough to be widely recognized by a symbol alone. You probably recognize symbol logos like Apple, Shell, Mercedes-Benz, windows and the likes.

WORDMARK (TEXT)
This type of logo feature a unique typographical style or custom typeface to create a brand that is simple yet distinctive. These are uniquely styled text logos that spell out the company or brand name. Some examples include Facebook, Disney, Sony, google, fedex and dell.

LETTER MARK (INITIALS OR FIRST LETTER)
Lettermarks are exclusively typographic. They use a symbol representing the company through the use of its initials or the brands first letter. Some companies and organizations that use lettermarks include: Cable News Network, Hewlett-Packard, International Business Machines and the like.

COMBINATION MARK (TEXT AND SYMBOL)
These logos combine a wordmark and a symbol or icon to give the flexibility for the use of either or both elements across a variety of applications.
You might recognize some combo marks like Hawaiian Airlines, Adidas, Sprint and Xbox360.

EMBLEM(TEXT INSIDE SYMBOL)
An emblem logo encases the company name within the design. Unlike combination marks, which position text and symbols side-by-side, emblems involve placing text inside of a symbol so that the two are practically inseparable.
They tend to resemble the look of an official badge or seal, making them a common choice for government, political organizations, schools, etc. Some examples include Starbucks, the NFL, BMW and Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.
