RAMADHAN REFLECTION: Characteristics of God-conscious people (Ahlu Taqwa)

O you who believe! Observing fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may achieve Taqwa (God’s consciousness) {sura al-baqarah: 183}

Quran has reveal that the most honourable in the sight of God is he who is conscious of Him. Fasting in the holy month of Ramadhan has however, provide an opportunity for the achievement of this God’s consciousness. That state of consciousness that brings about virtues which become embedded in our personality; and whose effects then reach out in every aspect of our lives.

Different characteristics of God-conscious people were stated in various places in the holy Quran, Allah however, states ten characteristics of these God’s conscious people in sura Furqan, chapter 25 from verse 63 onward.

First characteristics: HUMILITY
Verse 63: “And the servant of the Most Beneficent are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness”

These God’s conscious people, their daytime activities are characterized by humility. Their humility stem out from their realization of the majesty of their Lord. Therefore in their speech, walk, action, and relations with others, there is radiance of humility.

Second characteristics: WORSHIP AT NIGHT
Verse 64: “And those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing”

A God’s conscious being engages himself in worship at night (especially the later part of the night as explain by other verses in the Quran). By way of prostration, they express their total submission to the will of Allah. And by standing, they express their obedience to that Lord.

Third characteristics: REALIZATION OF THE FIRE OF HELL

These people realize the unbearable punishment for the sinful; the intensity of the fire of hell. Therefore, they constantly cry out in their prayers thus:

Verse 65: ‘And those who say: “Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of hell. Verily! Its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment.”’

This is their prayer. Their main concern is akhira (hereafter) not this duniya (worldly life). They fear the punishment of the fire of hell in the hereafter as express in verse 66: “Surely it is an evil abode and (evil) place to stay”

Fourth characteristic: MODERATION IN EXPENDITURE

Verse 67: “And they who when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, and keep between these just mean”

These people are not affected by the media and environmental presentation and praise of luxurious way of life. They do not have this insatiable, unquenchable thirst for consumption. They have a powerful vision about their future, that keeps them within the limit of moderation.

Fifth characteristics: RELIANCE ON GOD

Verse 68: “And they do not call upon another god other than Allah…”

No matter how magnanimous their problem is, these people will never make call upon anything other than their Lord, the All-powerful.

Sixth characteristic: RESPECT OF LIFE

They respect the sanctity of life.
Verse 68: “…and (they) do not slay the soul, which Allah has forbidden except in the requirements of justice,… ”

May Allah make us possess these characteristics. Amin.

Seventh characteristic: GUIDE OF CHASTITY

Verse 68: “…and (they) do not commit Zina (adultery or fornication)… ”

The following factors are some of the facilitating factors of Zina which can never sway the God’s conscious people:

1. S.exual saturated environment: A society where pictures, magazine, movies, tv, music, dressing/behavior are characterized by flagrant blatant display of indecency.

2. Encouragement: S.ex (in form of adultery and fornication) is being encouraged by evil advocators in many ways publicly.

3. Convenience: Privacy. The moment a society becomes affluent, many opportunities become available.

4. Lack of anticipating the consequence: those who commit/engage in zina usually do not anticipate the consequences of their action – contraction of physical illnesses, emotional guilt, etc.

5. Too Much Expectation: Many expect too much sexually from their spouses as a result of the imaginations in porn movies, pornographic pictures etc. If their spouses can not meet their expectations, they try to fulfill their lust wrongfully.

6. Fantasy: According to a survey in the US, 95% of males and 50% of females engage in s.exual fantasy.

All these are just facilitating factors. The final decision is exclusively ours. The God’s conscious people never fall prey to these factors despite the vow of Shaytan to mislead as reported in the Qur’an:
”He (satan) said: ‘My Lord! Because Thou hast made life evil to me, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to deviate (from the straight path).” {sura Hijr: 39}

But Shaytan knows his limit. He continues:
”Except Thy servants from among them, the devoted ones.” {sura Hijr v:40}

And All-ah then said:
Surely, as regards My servants, you have no authority over them except those who follow you of the deviators” {sura Hijr: 42}

Eight characteristics: NEVER ENGAGE IN FALSEHOOD
Verse 72: And they do not bear witness to what is false, and when they pass by what is vain, they pass by nobly.”

MUSIC
In this verse, “…la yash’aduna suhr […(they) do not witness vain and falsehood]” also refer to Music. Generally, music is haram (forbidden) in Islam. But going by its broad definition, not all music can be said to be Haram.

Islam forbid music for (i) its intoxicating effect (ii) its powerful ability to divert mind from the remembrance of God.

In summary, four features need to be considered to distinguish Haram from Halal:
1. LYRICS: this is the message of the Music. A music with bad message is automatically haram to listen to.However, if the message is good, other features need to be check before it can be said to be Halal.

2. Rhythm/Sound: Any Music with either repetitive Rhythm or sound that can “intoxicate” to the extent of or intent of dancing is considered haram even if the lyrics are good.

3. Musician: The personalities of the musician need to be investigated. There is always this connectivity between the musician and his/her audience. The audience is usually influenced in one way or the other by the personality of the musician. Musician with bad personalities, even if the message of his music is good, cannot be followed with his music.

4. Musical Instruments: These can provide/enhance the tune, rhythm and sound. Some instruments are basically designed for haram-type of music while others can be used either for haram or halal type (e.g Microphone). The verdict for this is similar to the verdict under “Rhythm/Sound”.

Ninth Characteristic: THEY ARE NOT DEAF AND BLIND

Verse 73: “And they who, when reminded of the signs of their Lord, do not fall down thereat deaf and blind.”

The God-conscious people usually reflect on the signs of God. These signs are plentiful in the creations.
”Most surely in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are signs for men who understand” {sura al-Imran: 190}

Tenth Characteristic: POSITIVE ASPIRATION
One of the main target of these people in life is to establish a God-fearing family that will set a high standard of Taqwah.

Verse 74: And they who say: ‘O our Lord! Grant us in our wives and our offspring the joy of our eyes and make us guides to those who guard (against evil).” .

Allah help us to reach the level of being constantly conscious of Him.

Repeatedly God has referred to the blind and the deaf.

And this analogy is in respect to people who God has told repeatedly to worship the One true God, yet persistently choose to worship a person.

The deaf are those who believe God is three in One after God has sent Jesus to tell them God is One.

The Blind are those who God has told to look in creation and to determine who else has the power to make the earth, the skies, the oceans and all creatures between it. Because if you these creations and you still choose to worship the created then that person can only be blind.

The blind are those who see the evidence of God's words (the destroyed nations) yet chooses the path of destruction still. What is the essence of the person's eyes.

On those who follow Jesus (AS), ask yourself...

Jesus prayed to God, Muslims pray to God. Christians pray to Jesus.

He is dead my brother. He already served his purpose on earth.
As it stands,my conclusion is 100% logical than yours because Jesus is nowhere to be found "Breathing" and alive just like every other dead person out there. U dnt have to contact a dead person because he is DEAD.

The Onus is on yr head to prove he is alive. Send me his address,his phone number,etc..or better still,find him,take a picture with him & post it here for all to see.
