New Fg Policy Onitsha Bridge Head Drug Market To Shut down July 1st This new policy by the federal Government will completely shut down the Onitsha Head Bridge market one of the biggest open drug market in Africa with a total of 5000 shops and over 10,000 traders will be out of their business. In order to ensure organised drug distribution system in the country, the federal government will on July 1 commence the implementation of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines (NDDGs) The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute stated this at a press conference on Friday in Abuja adding that regulatory agencies like the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and NAFDAC will on that date resume the exercise of their mandate to ensure full compliance. He said “We are hopeful that the existence of open drug markets in the country will be a thing of the past as the drug distribution system of the country has remained uncoordinated, chaotic and has resulted in the circulation of fake, adulterated, substandard and counterfeit drugs. According to Awute, this chaotic drug distribution posed a very big challenge to th e pharmaceutical sector in particular and the federal government in general, considering the negative impact the situation had on the entire healthcare delivery system of the country. LEADERSHIP recalls that in order to address the ugly situation, the federal government established the Presidential Committee on Pharmaceutical Sector Reform and charged it among others to develop a strategy towards the institutionalisation of a well ordered drug distribution system. The strategies adopted by the committee to achieve this include the development of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines in 2010 to provide guidance for drug distribution. Mr Awute said “The launch of the document in 2012 signalled the take-off of its implementation while the deadline was for the establishment of State Drug Distribution Centres (SDDCs) by the state governments and Mega Drug Distribution Centres (MDDSs) by the private sector was declared on 30th June, 2014. “The deadline was, however, extended to 30th June, 2015 to allow more time for the establishment of more SDDCs and MDDCs.” He explained that as the new deadline date has drown near, it was imperative to remind stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector and Nigerians so they would commence the full implementation of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines. He said that state governments were allowed to upgrade their medical stores to the level of SDDCs, adding that states like Jigawa, Niger, and Ekiti had already commenced the implementation of the guidelines while Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Anambra SDDCs were ready for take-off. He added that other developed MDDs structures included the Arsene Laboratory, World Wide Ventures and the Onitsha Mega Drug Distribution Centre waiting commissioning, even as the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria was supporting the establishment of ultra-logistics company with ongoing structures of the MDDCs in the six geopolitical zones of the country. http://ifedubatochukwu..com/2015/06/new-fg-policy-onitsha-bridge-head-drug.html

NAFDAC destroys N500m fake drugs in Onitsha Substandard and expired drugs, diapers, baby milk and other items worth about N500 million were yesterday destroyed in Awka, Anambra State by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). This took place just as a Chinese who specialises in importing fake and unregistered diapers was also the same day arraigned before the Federal High Court, Awka. The destruction of the items according to the Director General of the Agency, Dr Paul Orhii, was in line with the agency’s resolve to rid the country of unwholesome products. Addressing newsmen shortly before the destruction at the Anambra State Waste Management Agency’s dumpsite in Agu Awka, the NAFDAC boss, said the products were mostly seized in Onitsha, while businessmen in Bridgehead Drug market surrendered some after their expiration. He noted that the agency was determined to prosecute the matter of the Chinese and possibly commit him to jail if found guilty. He said, “You can see that we are not only fighting fake drugs here in Nigeria, we are also fighting it internationally, and even foreign companies that are part of this will not be spared.” The agency, Orhii said, would continue its fight against fake drugs in the country and advised business men who specialise in faking drugs or importing substandard ones to turn a new leaf and approach the agency on how they could always import genuine products. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/nafdac-destroys-n500m-fake-drugs-in-onitsha-2/ 2 Likes |

A selective war against corruption is in itself a corrupt practice. For those pulling up all sorts of news item to suppourt this policy, remember how huge that market is. . As bad as this is, closing an entire market whimsically to prove a point without taking into considerations the sufferings that will follow is a recipe for disaster. Btw, when is buhari closing the 'money exchange trade' dominated by bis kins? 13 Likes |

The Anambra state government should ensure that its State Drug Distribution Centres (SDDCs) only accomodates genuine merchants and be well coordinated so as not to give room to fake drugs merchants. By the way: This policy is another brainchild of Jonathan's administration. Kudos to Buhari for continuing with GEJ's policies (Autoi-pilot noni) 3 Likes |

The late Dora Akunyili would smile wherever she is if this policy is fully implemented. Open drug market allows for sale of adulterated pharmaceutical commodities. There's no place in the world where you sell drugs as if you're selling rice and beans. One major factor Akunyili identified as responsible for the madness of drugs in the hands of unauthorised persons was the chaotic drug distribution system in the country. To address this, NAFDAC under her leadership had proposed an organised distribution network via drug marts which would ensure that drugs would not only be in the hands of authorized persons alone, but would also ensure that drugs were tracked for ease of identification of possible problem areas including ease or recall if necessary. This however did not see the light of day due to the politicization of the idea among stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry. |

ifedubatorg: There are over 20 open drug markets scattered across the country. These markets retail drug products under conditions that contravene local and international drug regulations. The stakeholders started work in 2009 and all have been informed on the need to create a streamlined drug distribution system in Nigeria. Please take time to download the document and read. |

I AM FOR BIAFRA BUT ILLEGALITY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO STAND. ITS LIKE ALLOWING QUAKE TO RUN A HOSPITAL, DRUGS ARE POTENTIAL POISON AND SHOULD BE HANDLED BY EXPAT/SPECIALIST THATS THE PHARMACIST MOST NIGERIAN HAVE DIED FROM WRONG DRUG THAN THE ACTUALLY SICKNESS ITSELF. |
