Former military president, General Yakubu Gowon, has denounced claims by Amnesty International that the Nigerian security forces committed crimes against humanity in their fight against insurgents.

Speaking at a book launch in Abuja, yesterday, June 30, the former military head of state said the reports from Amnesty International is misleading.
Gowon, rather, lauded the military, stressing that support for them in the counter-terrorism fight will ensure the military restores safety and peace in Nigeria.

Speaking further, he eulogized Major Gen. Olukolade for his role as the spokesman of the Nigerian Military.

The former military president maintained that if any faction was to be condemned, then it should be the Boko Haram sect, and not the Nigerian military.

Speaking through Evangelist Austin Kemie, Gowon said:

The [Amnesty International’s] report was most unfair and misleading; they were alluding to the Nigerian military what the Boko Haram was doing against the Nigerian public – military and civilians alike.

“It is Boko Haram that has been committing atrocities and horrendous, mindless killings of innocent citizens and security personnel. It is Boko Haram that must be condemned, not the Nigerian armed forces.

“I therefore congratulate you on the publication of these two books which tells the Nigerian public and the world at large, the truth about the Nigerian military,” the statement read.

A number of prominent figures who were in attendance at the book launch included Professor Jerry Gana and General Abdusalam Abubakar, amongst others.


Earlier, the Amnesty report alleged that in the course of Nigeria’s war against the Islamic Terrorist sect, Boko Haram, at least 7,000 people were said to have died in government detention owing to brutal conditions; with an additional 1,200 extra-judicially executed by Nigerian security forces. Also, a total of 20,000 have been “arbitrarily arrested” by the authorities.

The Nigerian army has, however, dismissed the claims by Amnesty International as untrue. It also alleges that the report of the human right body is full of inconsistencies.

Ihejirika was a brilliant General who was able to confine boko haram to sambisa forest when he was in charge but some people out of hatred and envy kept on shouting that he was committing genocide and called for his removal.

We are proud of you Ihejirika, if only the timid GEJ had not tried to please the core North at all costs and removed you, you probably would have extinguished the fire of boko haram by now...

I get your point but boko haram was largely under control when Ihejirika was in charge. They carried out some dare-devil attacks, true but things went out of hand as soon as he was removed.

Not trying to insult, but most times, you are just a noise factory, churning out bombast at the speed of light. . Gowon himself has apologised severaly, even if half-heartedly, and you are here yarning dust. . Amnesty international, just like ICC and co are western intruments to force certain policy goals down the throat of the gaullible. That is well established. . It is also an established fact that, Gowon doesn't understand the term "rule of engagement" during military conflicts. Last year, he was on top of his voice, urging Jonathan and Minimah to cordone off and blockade the north east just to get at boko haram. That is like killing a fly with a sledge-hammer. The only reason why he was proud to suggest that tactics was because he got away with it last time in Biafra.

This should be coming from our sitting president rather he's probing them. I hope he isn't fooled by these westerners and commits himself to something bad. There are serious war crimes against the US and UK and these crimes have triggered more terrorist attacks against them yet we don't here about those. He's a retired military general and by now he should have taken a stand. He's being watched by his fellow African President's, I hope he doesn't betray us. When OBJ discovered that the civilians were protecting the militants then, he bombed everybody and till now nobody is talking. And this same thing is happening yet the military has been careful but our president refused to understand. US is just using AI to defend why they refused to sell us arms when they are supposed to.
