The government of the United States of America (USA) has said it has not forgotten the abducted Chibok school girls and would  assist the Nigerian government in rescuing them from Boko Haram terrorists.

The Commander United States Africa Command (USAAFRICOM) General David Rodriguez and assistant secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, U.S Department of State Linda Thomas-Greenfield made this known in a joint online press conference on Wednesday.

Fielding questions from journalists across Africa in a virtual interactive interview, the U.S government officials stated that the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls is high priority for their government, while commending President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife for visiting their families and letting them know the girls have not been forgotten.

They said: “The U.S has continued to share intelligence with the Nigerian leadership, about those Chibok girls as well as other people who have been taken by Boko Haram, and we‘ll continue to do that. So far, the effort didn’t yield getting back all the girls, many of the people held by Boko Haram have been freed over time and we continue to pursue efforts to get most of the Chibok girls back.

“This has been an extremely high priority for the U.S government to assist in bringing these girls home. We will not let up on our efforts, we will continue to work with the government. We commend President Buhari and his wife for visiting the families of the Chibok girls and letting them know that we have not forgotten about them,” they added.

Responding to a question on whether the US will support the Buhari administration with equipment in fighting insurgency they said: “President Buhari is going to be in Washington later this month for meetings with the administration and we will have discussions with him on what we can do to assist Nigeria and their effort to fight against Boko Haram. Part of that discussion will be how we can provide the equipment and support that Nigerians require."
