Rubber is grown in Edo, Delta, Ondo, ogun,, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Ebonyi and Bayelsa States where the amount of rainfall is about 1800 mm to 2000 mm per annum

Natural rubber performs three main functions in our national economy; these are the provision of raw materials for the agro- based industries, it provides foreign exchange earning and places Nigeria in the world map as a net exporter of rubber and lastly, it offers employment to a sizeable segment of the Nigerian farming rural population.

Natural rubber takes five to seven years before the commencement of tapping.
Tapping is defined as the controlled wounding of a matured rubber tree with the aim of extracting from it the economic fluid called latex while at the same time ensuring that the economic life of the tree is preserved.16 to 25 years( age of plantation) is considered economical and if not rehabilitated would lead to decline in yield hence reduction in income.

It is unfortunate that this art of rubber tapping has become obsolete and relegated to oblivion because Nigeria embraced the sudden riches of the black gold. We must go back to our roots of cultivating the soil.

[size=14pt]Nice, brings some nostalgia back.

Reminds me of early 90's when I used to follow grandma to her Cocoa plantation and on the way to farm I witnessed first hand how they tap the rubber. After cutting the tree for fluid, it can take days for the droplet to filled-up the bowl placed on the opening.

Rubber Plantations are dying away, as many young and old people leave them to become Okada and keke drivers. One of the very sad effects of Oil.

this is the evidence and importance of Agriculture, Agriculture must be paramount to Nigeria Government and not only Crude Oil. China relies more in Agriculture and Technology, if we can invest more in Agriculture, this will increase the national GDP and economically, we can achieve more as a NATION.
